Posts: 142 | Yeah, it's been said before. Systematically sending reels to pikemaster, already done with my boat projects and I don't think I can find anything else I can use on the boat. I find myself tying weight on to my rod and just casting down the road. This sucks, can't fish, work is stressful, the weather is miserable and we're not even a month into this mess. I would just go on vacation but work wont allow it. I've spent a small fortune this winter and I can't use any of it. I don't ice fish, and I dont think I want to start. Pretty soon football will be over (not that it matters, my team is garbage) and I will really be dying. New boat, new trolling motor, new sonar, new lures, rebuilt reels, even spent $ on a beautiful new bass rod and I here I sit, impulsive/bored as ever. Contemplating buying things I don't need so I could anxiously await putting them down and waiting for spring. Unkind, miserable solstice. I tiptoed the idea of driving 7 hours to the ohio musky show to my wife (she's a good wife) and as the words came out of my mouth I felt like a madman. My 30 minutes of musky hunter tv is not enough. I will never ever ever take another blessed day on the water for granted ever again. Is this cabin fever? I'm going crazy here.

Posts: 32886 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | It's Winter, happens every year. Adjust. If your girlfriend dumped you because 'you didn't have enough money', she was a future nightmare anyhow. One thing I can tell you for sure, there's other girls out there. Some even like fishing. Dear Abby I ain't. Sorry. Learn to ice fish. I's a blast.

Posts: 3480 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | Can't be all that bad...you now have MORE cash for muskie fishing!! I'd say take up the ice fishing. Was out today in this wonderful wind and managed a nice catch... 7 or 8 bass and 3 northerns (two in the 6 - 7 pound range) and missed probably 6 more all on one tip-up, and about 20 or so sunfish on waxies since I was chasing the one flag so much... Out for about 5 hours or so... Went through a dozen suckers and almost all of my waxies. Takes the edge off and passes the time while still getting something pulling on a line. Steve

Posts: 415 | I love musky fishing as much as anybody, but if you are just waiting around for spring you are missing out on all types of fun stuff that an be done. There's so much more out there than musky fishing. Don't get me wrong, muskies are my favorite past time and if given the choice I'd fish for them 365 days a year, but that's not the case, so you have to adapt and move on. Embrace the time off, pick up a new hobby or two. You never know, you might even enjoy the off season.

If my memory serves correct you said you live somewhere in Pa. If that's the case, Pete Maina will be at the Harrisburg Bass Pro next weekend (January 26 & 27). I believe he'll be giving seminars Saturday and Sunday at noon. That's what the flyer I got in the mail said anyway. I will likely call at some point this week to make sure I'm not mistaken.

Posts: 142 | I'm not concerned about spending money, it just sucks because all of the new goodies I get have to wait. Instant gratification wanted! I have a wife so my gf if the last thing I'm worried about (that was a joke). I forgot about keyes I'll have to look into it. I workout to fill in some gaps. Ice around here isn't thick enough yet, maybe by the end of next week. I'll give it a shot. I'll have to check pete maina out as well.

Posts: 4080 Location: Elko - Lake Vermilion | Now is the time to WORK and make some Jack! I'm working in a smoke stack in Northern Mn. for the next 2 weeks......It is -11 below zero right now , with a wind chill of -32below zero,.... Colder than a Witches Tit.........This Really Sucks but for time and a half today, and double time on Sunday,($105.00 per hr) I will find enough clothes to stay warm....... Like the old Farmer used to say" Ya gotta make Hay while it's time to make Hay" Cabin Fever is real,... Just find something else to do in the mean time...... I like to work and make a few bucks. My Motto is to work in the winter and Hunt for Muskies in the Summer. Jerome

Posts: 1360 Location: Lake "y" cause lake"x" got over fished | I hear ya man. Two days after the season ended I was craving the feel of my rod in my hands, my shoulders were wondering what was wrong when they weren't hurting anymore after a day on the water. It was like body shock. A few things that I do to pass the time. I am a HUGE ice fisher. I love it, my wife loves it. Only better fishing is, of course, fishing muskies. But, when you can't there is nothing wrong with grabbing some Smoked Salmon, a few sandwiches, a 12 pack of your favorite beer and sitting on the ice with friends and family. if you catch a fish, to me, it's really just a bounus. Don't get me wrong, If I never caught fish I would just a be the wired drunk guy on the lake. But the best part is, no one would say a word, because most of the guys on the ice are all wierd anyway. Another thing I have adopted is making my own bucktails. The only time I do it is right after I watch musky hunter and keyes outdoors. Watching them catch fish when I can't makes me want to tinker with my stuff. I also have access to an indoor pool that I can go to and toss lures for short time. At least then I can work on my technique. Don't forget Hockey just started. My Wild are 1-0. taking down Colorado tonight 4 to 2. Ryan Sutter and Zach Parise played great. Super excited to see how the rest of the season pans out. I CAN'T WAIT!!!!! Lastly, I am a muskies INC member and on the board for my respected chapter. I am able to do a bunch of different stuff with those guys. Get together talk muskies, have a few beers and reminess about the seasons past. this is something I HIGHLY recomend. There is nothing that compares when you can get around guys that have 300 years collective musky experience and pick their brains. No matter how much we think we know, or how good you think you are. There is always something better and different that can be done to improve your skills as an angler. This is an organization I feel honored to be a part of and the information is unmatched. I actually enjoy the winter months. There is so many things to look forward to being able to do. Instead of wondering what you could be doing, take the initiative and try something out of your comfort zone. Who knows, you may find a way to love winter regardless of the temperature outside. Happy hunting

Posts: 142 | I run a small family business. We work on towers. Cell, broadcast, even a few smoke stacks, monopoles etc. There really is a lot to be said trying to work on those in conditions in the winter months. I an involved in every single part of the process. I am thankful for my paycheck and perks. I work my butt off winter and summer and spring and fall. I think that might be it, fishing calms me. Work has been stressful lately. I dunno, maybe winter just isn't for me.

Posts: 6 | greenstealth, I'm not trying to be a jerk here but I'm thinking you should be happy. Sounds like you have a successful business, a good family, a good wife and a garage full of new musky gear. If you're so bored, find a good cause to volunteer your time and money too. I've been at a place in my life where I was so down and felt like everything I had worked for meant nothing. Count your blessings dude. There's a LOT of people that would trade places with you in a heatbeat. StormyK

It seems like it took forever to get all setup I wanted and now that I finally have it, I can't use it. I'm not unhappy with my life one bit, it's the weather I'm not happy with. it's not like it's a big shock either, it does happen every year. Last year I started musky fishing. Maybe thats what it is.

I don't think he is whining, just impatient. Sounds like someone who is used to making things happen but now the calendar is against him. I have been in HR for over 35 years and impatient folks like that are the ones I like to hire. Complacent folks tend to be steady but not problem solvers, or change agents. The guy who is not happy about waiting for things to change is the one who gets things done. Just that sometimes you run into something you can't change, like the calendar. Posts: 8 | I would either pick up ice fishing or find a river that is open and has hungry fish. Here in wisconsin when i get sick of ice fishing I fish a local river for pike when its warm enough. It can be a real blast especially since pike are so aggressive and gives me a chance to use the long rods and open water fish.

Well, Ben on the one hand you are right, same field. But I have changed jobs, and states a number of times, each time for more responsibility. Also, the one job where I didn't like the company and its prospects, I took a job a hundred miles away, sold a house I had built and moved my family. So, from that perspective I am very comfortable with change. I also have lead teams that served to integrate change as the result of aquisitions and mergers.

Posts: 661 Location: Sussex, NJ | greenstealth, if the delaware isn't too far from you i'd say take a day and venture down there and cast for some skis. even if you don't catch any fish, you could find some spots for spring time and give them a shot then. Might be worth your time in the future. let me know if you go

Posts: 242 | I too like you had severe winter blues due to the lack of fishing opportunities in the winter. I found a solution in Fly Fishing. I know it is not musky fishing, but being able to fish all winter has helped with the withdraw. Now I look forward to every season. It is just a matter of putting away the conventional gear and pulling out the fly gear.

Posts: 639 Location: Hudson, WI | You could just "bank" fishing time. I spend tons of time with the wife and kids this time of year doing family activities. "Can we go to my parents this weekend?" SURE!!! "Wanna go shopping and take me out to dinner on Saturday?" NO PROBLEM! You can take care of all of your to-do list, too. Once fishing starts, she will have no ammunition to keep you off of the water.

Location: Illinois | greenstealth - 1/20/2013 10:13 AM Last year I started musky fishing. Maybe thats what it is. Not maybe. As you get some years under the belt, you develop better coping mechanisms. Musky forums, musky shows, musky clubs, musky books, musky swaps- these are just some of what I do in the winter to chill me out. You're neck deep in the disease, and so this is the worst off season you'll have to endure. It gets easier, trust me.
