What are some rare and common questions you get asked when it comes to Muskies and Muskie fishing?

Here are some common questions I get asked to get the discussion started...
- How does wind effect Muskie locations?
- What are the best water temperatures to fish for Muskies?
- When is the best time to catch a Muskie?

Thank you for your participation!

This is one that kills me.  You pull up to the dock and someone says, "that's a big net.  Whatcha fishin' for?"  "Muskies."  "Are there muskies in here?"  It never fails.  Once I hear the question about what we're fishing for and answer "muskies", I always know the next thing out of their mouth is gonna be "are there muskies in here?"

A couple of years ago on my favorite lake we came across a couple of teenagers in a jon boat (small lake). I was throwing my favorite twin 10 and one of the kids asked me "what is that supposed to be, some kind of squid or something". The most common question I get is what do they taste like and I always tell them chicken.

Funny!

I guess what I am looking for are more so serious questions such as......

How does barametric pressure effect Muskies?
What are the best times, what type of lures work best when, etc etc.

Thank you and keep the posts coming!

My favorite questions i was asked this year by customers was:
1.will you be cleaning and packaging our fish for our trip back to chicago?

2. my son is in taxidermy school so if we catch one can he mount it?

3.Will you drive your boat over so we can take some pictures of those ducks?

4. Do muskys attack people?

5. So you really think we will only catch 2 muskys today? you have alot of fish pictures on your website, why only 2 fish? (woman from New Mexico never been fishing before) We did end up catching 2 on a half day trip. Then I got a nasty email from her saying how disapointed she was we did'nt catch more than 2 muskys

6.Do you think that 45" I just let go will eat again today? Id like to try and catch it again
Thanks,
Jeff Hanson

My job puts me in front of alot of faces of non fishing casual andnon musky anglers. The most often comment by far is if I keep and eat them. It is almost always asked.

Why aren't we moving faster/more/over there, etc.

What other fish are in this lake?

How do you know where to fish?

Why are muskies released all the time?

How can you tell when the muskies are going to bite?

Is a storm bad or good for fishing?

What's the best time to fish for muskies?

What does this bait imitate?

Some years back, I made the mistake of putting some of my fish pictures on my desk in my office in downtown Chicago.

"Oh my GOD, what IS that?!"
"that's a muskie."
"Did you CATCH that?!"
"yeah" (I wanted to say "no. I was just standing there on the boat and the f-er flew up out of the water and landed in my hands!")
"Oh my GOD!! Wha... Do you eat them?"
"no"
"NO?! You caught a fish like THAT and you didn't eat it?"
"nope. We put them back."
"well, WHY?!"

*sigh*

Some of my other favorites:

"poor fishy!"
"why would you hurt an animal like that?"
"Oh, I bet you HUNT, too. I'm a vegetarian!"
"you put your hands in the water with THOSE swimming around?"
"Is that, like, the OCEAN?"
"I'd be afraid one of those would jump out of the water and eat me!"
"that's not a real fish!"

I finally decided to take the pictures home. It just wasn't worth trying to explain muskie fishing to people who have literally never been out of the city before.

I tried some clever responses like "oh, they're fine as long as you stay away from the teeth. Give 'em a chance, though, and they'll rip your arm off!!" but people thought I was serious.

I had one guy look at my tackle and say "wow, what are all those decoys for?"

When people are in my office, I have heard variations of this statement `My grandfather/father/brother has been fishing in Wisconsin for 10/20/30 years and never caught a musky.'

When folks stop by my office and see pics, I get a lot of "Where did you catch those?" I reply with, "Locally", and they usually follow up with, "Yeah, we get them all the time by accident... Pretty easy to catch, but boy can they get big."

I also get a lot of, "What are those?" I reply, "Those are muskies." They follow up with, "Except that one." as they point at a muskie in my hands. Then they point at another one, "And that one! Those are northern, but the other ones I can see as muskies." That's when I realize I'm wasting my time and change the subject.

The best one ever was a with a friend of mine who used to guide on the Yahara Chain. He was pulling his boat out of the Wingra launch one day as a woman was walking along the shoreline with her little white fluffy dog on a leash.

"Did you catch any?"
"Yeah, we got a couple!"
"What are you fishing for?"
"Muskies!"
"Wha.. There's MUSKIES in here??!"
"oh yeah, lots of them!"
"That's HORRIBLE! Somebody should DO SOMETHING!!"

With that she got all flustered, yanked her dog away from the shoreline and stomped off!

"Have a nice day!"

(hey can we borrow your dog?) lol
