Posts: 41 | I'm going to be in Minneapolis for the first time Jan 21-25 and was wondering what I can/should do while I'm there. I like to ice fish but I'm not hardcore about it but have all the equipment. I was wondering if it would be worth my time taking my equipment (rods/reels/lures/sonar and auger) and giving it a shot. And if so, how hard would it be to find fish on one of the nearby lakes or would I need a guide? My thought is it's either that or I just stick to doing the "basic" tourist stuff (AKA, check out local pubs and get drunk)...but I hate thought of going to Minneapolis and not fishing. What do you guys think, would be worth my time?

Posts: 13688 Location: minocqua, wi. | bring your fishing stuff ... Minnesota Ice-Fishermen are more pleasant than the musky variety and will help you get on fish. i'm sure you can rent a vexilar if you don't have one. some great hard-water fishing in Minneapolis to be had. Mille Lacs is an hour away and you can rent overnight shacks too ... that's a hoot!

Posts: 1360 Location: Lake "y" cause lake"x" got over fished | for sure bring the fishing stuff!! Where are you staying? Can give you an idea of what lakes to hit depending on where you are going to be at. I don't think you would need a guide to find fish. depending on the lake there are sites that have great info about fishing reports and so forth. Also what Jonnysled said is defiantly true as well. Any local bait store is more than willing to give a spot or two on a whatever lake you choose. Otherwise, if you like Hockey, the Wild should have one or two homes games (FINALLY) within the time that you are here. Don't go see the wolves their terrible, unless you really like the team we are playing. Edited by FAT-SKI 1/9/2013 1:24 PM

If you want to drool over tackle, head to Thorne Brothers. Extremely knowledgable and friendly staff with fair pricing. Bar recommendations in the Minneapolis area: 1. Minneapolis Town Hall Brewery (Awesome award-winning house brews and usually stellar guest taps) 2. Mac's Industrial Sports Bar (Incredible food with a great tap list) 3. Stanley's Northeast Bar Room (Very good food, numerous taps and a "Beer Cellar" of rare and delicious craft beer releases) 4. Northbound Smokehouse Brewpub (New kid on the block with great food and amazing house brews) 5. Lyndale Tap House (Excellent food and a respectable tap list) 6. Hell's Kitchen (Superb Brunch/Breakfast selections) Other attractions include many great music venues (The Fine Line, The Cabooze, The Dakota and the world-famous First Avenue), The Walker Art Center and The Mall of America amongst others. I hope you enjoy our wonderful city and can share the experience with a friend!

I definatly second the wild game! Also, you could rent a fish house, there are several of them on a couple lakes, Waconia in particular where they are always up on the fishing reports and moving houses to productive spots. The local marina will also give you info on what's going where. Look up Waconia Marina on prices if you are interested. Also with this you wouldn't have to lug all of your stuff along.

Posts: 41 | Thanks alot guys, this is great stuff. This is the kind of information a guy needs before going to a knew place..... Where to find fish, who not to fish with (Kirby)lol, where the best brews are, the top pizza and steak houses in town and hearing about the Hell's Kitchen's breakfast (and the bathroom with pictures that makes kids cry) definitely sounds worthy of a visit:) I'm going to be staying Minnetonka the 22nd and 23rd and might relocate to somewhere else the 24-26th if there is location that is better suited? I'll have the days to myself the 22-25th and I'll be going out with my girlfriend in the evening. I'm sure we'll hit up some of the mentioned pubs, steakhouses and pizza places and maybe a game/event one evening. And I'm sure we'll hit the mall of america one day because it's there. And I'm definitely going to hit up Thornes Bros. one day/evening! But after reading the suggestions I plan to spend most of my time in the day fishing. I'll have a rental car so anywhere within an hour is game. Since I'll be next to Lake Winnetonka the 22nd and 23rd I imagine that'd be a good starting point?

Good thought, didn't think of that. I'll check out the prices to see if they're something I can do. Is this service available on other lakes?

Posts: 186 Location: Waconia, MN | check out this site, http://fishhouserentalmn.com/ Sounds like they have houses or can have houses on; Lake Minnetonka – both upper Lake Minnetonka and lower Lake Minnetonka, Lake Waconia, Lake Whaletail, Long Lake, Dutch Lake, and Little Long. I would presonally stick to Minnetonka or Waconia.

Posts: 2325 Location: Chisholm, MN | Sorry! Guess I'll keep my mouth shut next time. You'll have to go and prove me wrong I hope you do. I know there are big fish in the cities. Giant muskies, bass and maybe even a couple decent walleyes but all you ever hear from the metro is; I wish I was up north! Good luck fishing!
