Just curious, what handed are you for fishing? Right handed (meaning your right hand is on the reel handle) or Left handed (meaning your left hand is on the reel handle). Do you use some right and some left handed reels throughout your day? Maybe a poll would help but I'm not sure how to add one.

I'm right handed but use left handed reels because I get better hooksets with my right arm & I fight the fish easier.

I dont get how the norm is to have the handle on the left on a spinning reel, but on the right side on a baitcaster. I'm left handed and have to use any reel with the handle on the right side or it just feels weird.

Right handed, and use lefty reels. I want the strong arm to hold the rold.

It's only logical for right handed people to use left hand wind reels. Stong arm/hand om rod to get good solid hooksets and control the lure.
I'm right handed but reel with my left hand. I wish more tackle companys made both right and lefty reels.

Left Handed!

I do use some right reels, but they feel very unnatural. My right arm is my power arm so it makes sense that, that is the arm to set the hook with. I prefer left all the way.

Also to all you lefty's out there, Is it not frustrating to have reels on the market like the Tranx, and not even want to buy one cause they don't make it in lefty?? Or any other reels not made in lefty, but I am not sure how many other great examples there are.

I'm right handed, and I reel with my left hand on both spinning and baitcasting reels. As others have said, it helps with stronger hooksets and rod control.

I am right handed and I crank with my right hand. It is how I was raised and reels are more readily available. Do what works.

- Right-handed
- Cast with both left and right, though far more accurate with my right
- Reel with my right hand on a baitcaster, left on a spinning reel

I am right handed but always have used the lefty reels as well. I am surprised by the others doing the same. So why is it hard to find lefty reels??

I'm left handed, and I use casting reels designed for left handed people ie reels with the crank on the right side. I like to work the rod and cast with my dominate arm/hand. It doesn't take any skill to turn a reel handle, but I want to be in control with the rod with my 'best' arm. Not entirely sure why someone would cast with one hand, and then switch hands with the rod to reel in with the other, every single cast.

This year, I forced myself to fish with a reel designed for right handed people(crank on the left), for a full outing or two with my buddy Jeremy. It only took an hour or so to really get used to it, and I'm considering purchasing a couple of them for switching up on week long trips etc, when the arms get tired.

I use both, lefty for dawgs so I can rip them with my dominant arm. Right , for jerk baits, just can't do it lefty. Everything else I switch up. It's nice to give one side a break.

I am right handed. But I fish with left handed reels. I can cast farther and fight the fish better with my dominate arm. So, I fish correctly!

I am right handed, I use reels that leave my right hand on the rod at all times. No advantage in passing the rod from one hand to the other. Quicker, harder hooksets and more action imparted on the baits with my dominate hand on the rod. You got guys so anal about sharp hooks, top of the line and leaders, beefing up lures, etc., but something like getting better hpooksets, better lure action, etc is out of the question.

I have a buddy that switches hands while fishing and has since 1966, but I can outfish him from the back of the boat using a jackpot. It makes a ton of noise and when he uses one, it comes in quite as a snake across the surface.

As to the quote above, most leftys buy right side crank reels (I hate the term "right handed" reels). The Tranx is now only available in lefty now IMHO.

I'm right handed and use right handed reels for high speed and hard pulling baits. I use a left handed reel for Jerkbaits and on all of my spinning equipment.

I am Right handed and reel with my left. When i started buying bait casters I wondered why right handed people reeled with there right hand. My research showed that when bait casters first came out. That the gear ratio was almost or one to one. So reels where made right hand cranks because that was what most people where, and that was your hand that could crank the fastest to move the baits. with the high gear ratio's we see it;s not hard to crank plenty fast with your week arm. I also like my strong arm doing the hook sets.

I think guys who use there strong arm to set hooks, rip alot of baits right out of Muskies mouths ! 100lb Braid with no stretch and XXH rods with little flex, lock down drags.
I'm right handed and fish with right hand baitcasters, I never have to worry about finding a reel like a TRANX, TRINIDAD, LJV400 or a 700TE, SALTIST Level Wind and parts are easy to find for right hand reels and are cheap, left hand reels parts are sometimes twice the price of right hand reel parts, and left hand reel parts can on back order for months !

----------

I apologies, maybe my statement was misunderstood. The question asked in teh original post was...

Right handed (meaning your right hand is on the reel handle) or Left handed (meaning your left hand is on the reel handle)?

I am right handed but only use 'left side' reeling reels. I am saying that reels like the Tranx only come in "right side reeling". It is irritating to me to have great reels on the market and not care if I own one or not. Reeling on the right side is very unnatural and I am not a fan. I do own a "right reeling" reel, however, I don't even use it that much. I need the paddle on the left to feel like I am getting any action out of my presentation. So I use right hand on the rod at all times, and use left hand to reel. I am flat out not comfortable doing it any other way. It just feels wrong.

Right handed and reel left. Used to reel with right but converted to left. Felt uncomfortable at first and i gave up on it and went back to right. I was having issues reeling with my right arm so I decided to try a whole season of reeling left. I now do not own a right handed reel with any type of reel. Its totally natural reeling left and I love it. I don't rip hooks out and don't have any trouble finding reels at the smae cost as the rest.
