I got a hero 3 camera and in the packaging it says a product update is required before using, so I go to their website and click on updates and the website crashes and says service unavailable. has anyone had this problem or know how to fix this?

Think I saw some where, might of been the FB page that it can be used out of the box. The only thing it updates is the firmware so the wifi works. I could be wrong though...

I just got a GoPro Hero3 as well this year and tried this. Same thing happened to me. My issue is, I do not have a facebook (like the rest of the world). Does anyone have any idea when they may be back up and running again?? Or know of a way that I can find that information out?

Also my second ? is.. Where would I purchase a polarized lenz for the camera?? I saw on another thread earlier that they were talking about this lenz and I would very much like to get one. Can I just get them from normal retailers ie, BestBuy, Target, Gander mountain?? Or is it something that I have to purchase online from their website?

You can't buy a polarized lens like you might with sunglasses. On the GoPro you get the polarization from a filter that fits between the lens and the housing. Search the forums for more discussion on the topic with links to where you can get them. You could call Best Buy or similar electronics stores and see if they carry them.

I got a polarized lens for x-mas. I have NOT field tested it... came from Polar Pro I believe. I'll edit this post if I am incorrect.

Another interesting question. I was looking on Amazon and I found a red filter for the camera for underwater viewing in the ocean with blue water. But I was wondering if anyone has used one or know of anyone that has used one??? Do they work as well for lakes opposed to the ocean??? Just curious, I found a 3 pack of filters for $24.95. One red, One magenta and one polarized. So I got it and thought I would give it a shot. Let me know if you guys have used one? Thanks

What kind of battery life are you guys getting out of the new GP3's? I've read some pretty disappointing reviews on the battery life and charging. Has GoPro corrected this?

Thanks,
Ron

Yeah the first five or so times I used it I had about 5 hours on a charge. I then brought it to LOTW last weekend and had some other issues with it. It was not filming correctly. It would start to record, then stop after one second. Not only that but none of the pictures I took in LOTW came through o0n the micorSD card either. SO I have no idea what happened to mine. But when I brought it back and recroded.. start to finsh I got about 4.5 hours on it and it worked great. So I have NO CLUE what happened in LOTW. Just a glich maybe? kind of a crappy place to have a glich

Ski,
Thanks for the input and your not alone. On the GoPro webpage there are over 100 reviews to read and it seems at least half of he reviews describe what you just said. I was thinking about buying this camera but will probably hold off untill GoPro fixes the issues. Have you done any firmware updates on it lately? GoPro is aware of the issues and hopefully firmware updates can correct this.Sorry to hear about LOTW, thats gotta be frustrating.

Ok, that's awesome then. Along with the problems Ski was having alott, and I mean alottt of people were only getting around 40 mins a charge. Saying the battery sucked. Did you do a firmware update?

rjhland, thanks man, I actually didn't know about those reviews so thanks for the heads up. I'm glad I'm not alone. Yes, I have done updates on it, but haven't checked for them since I got back from my trip, so I will check. And don't feel to bad, there were 3 other gopro's there, plenty of good pics and videos were taken. So I at least still have all that, just sucks that mine didn't work. But hopefully GoPro corrects the issue, and hopefully it's BEFORE the season opens.

I am still debating on getting a Silver 3 or just going with the proven 2 Outdoors package .GoPro really seems to be sitting on their laurels with the 3 and it's preventing me from pulling the trigger.
Here is 51 pages (so far) of bug issues and fixes by the end users: http://goprouser.freeforums.org/all-hd3-problems-issues-report-disc...
I hope you get yours working flawlessly before the season opener and I hope I can decide what to do before then.
Dropping 3 to 4 hundy on a camera and have it not work properly out of the box is mind boggling. Maybe they should have made by Shimano and Weeds must have been made on a Tuesday.

Look at the V.I.O. POV HD. Best camera out there, and tough as nails. Loop record, excellent audio, and a good discount. Runs on AA batteries, about 3.5 to 4 hours on a set of rechargables. Comfortable to wear, and lots of mounting otions, plus a 12 volt adapter power pack.

I've had V.I.O. cameras for years, starting with the original, the 1.0 and then the 1.5. The new HD is the best I have owned. We have tried several brands of the Go pro style cameras, and ended up going back to the V.I.O.

Steve,
Thanks for the post, and very enticing. I went to the V.I.O website but they didn't have allot of information on what kind of SD card, length of video on settings, editing software, slow mo, zoom, hardware options, cables needed and ect.
I will check it out.
Thanks,
Ron

The camera accepts an SDHC card. I'm using a 32 gig class 10 right now. Here's the specs, and they are offering a 20% off deal right now.

This camera loop records. I have mine set at 15 minutes, which I have found to be more than enough. Soon as the fish is released, hit tag, then record, then record again. Only the last 15 minutes are saved, so a 32 gig card will last a REALLY long time and editing is a snap.

The microphone, camera, and DVR are weather proof, so no need to do anything at all if it starts raining. I mount the camera on a hat brim and route the cable down the back of the hat, then tuck the DVR in a pocket or belt pack.

I have one set up with the 12 volt adapter power pack, will use it on 1080 at 142 degrees, and cover a wide portion of the boat with a mount. I can tag with the remote while also wearing a V.I.O. on my cap...two points of view with independent audio using the mic-in port and a wireless microphone if the weather permits. I need to experiment with that function using our wireless sets, which will allow a shotgun OR lapel from the receiver hooked to the Mic-in and another lapel mic to be worn by another angler or placed in by the DVR. I'll let you know if it works after the weekend.

Thanks for the info, I seen a muskie video using the VIO POV on youtube and the quality wasn't the greatest but I'm sure it was probably due to the editing program used! Im going to look into the VIO POV as spare camera thanks for the info.

My first GoPro that i was using every day ended up having an error as well and would randomly turn off after i started recording, i called GoPro and sent it back and they had a new one to me asap, i was very impressed with there customer service and understanding of the problem at hand. I have 3 batteries for my one camera and can get a full day out of 1 and a half batteries filming 720 at 60fps

The Quality was not the greatest because the VIO POV is not that good. The video you saw was posted by the company themselves.

You can post all the technical specs and features the VIO POV has steve but the proof of the quality of video is in the final product. The GoPros default FPS and quality is without a doubt much better than the VIO POV. You don't have to worry about any nerdy wires going down your back or crushing the base in your pocket. Less shake too and the far distance quality seems to be much better also.

Check this out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4PRQypgLJs

Just like anything you need to practice with the equipment to get the best out of it. The GoPro is an actual hand held camera, fully waterproof, and far more practical for a fisherman. The average guy is not going to get the best or average production value out of it as easy or as quick out of the VIO POV as they would a GoPro. Not everyone is a specifications expert such as yourself Steve. The whole point is to catch fish while you are on the water.

Steve, thanks for the specs. I like that tag idea of saving what you want, nice option and i like that mini DVR..
Playground, nice video. I am guessing since that clip was posted in September it was shot with the Hero 2 since the Hero 3 came out in November of 2012?
Allot of info to digest.
Thanks.
