Posts: 8 | We were fishing on the South end of Mille Lacs, I caught the fish about a half hour after moon set on Saturday Nov. 3rd. Caught it on a Pounder Double Dawg "Lemon Tails". Jason was saving this spot for the moon set time as he had seen a very nice fish a few days earlier. When the fish hit it was sort of a tap, I set the hook and instantly I could feel the big head shakes and the power of the heavy fish. A few seconds later about 25 ft. from the boat the fish only a few feet under the water turned sideways from us and gave us the full profile view, I think that is the time I said it is a monster. I new Jason and Jody had seen it too, Jason was like " stay calm, take your time". The fish stayed a good distance from the boat and made a nice run to the other side of the boat, Jason was ready with the net and I guided her home and Jason slid the net underneath her. We all wanted a better look at her while in the net, Jason turned towards me and just said "it is a Giant, I cannot believe how fat it is". The big girl was not hooked too bad so very little stress getting the pounder unhooked. Jody was getting all of the cameras ready and the board, Jason had the soft tape and said we have to get a girth on this one. We cleared the deck and I hoisted the beast over to the board, we got the girth as Jason declared and showed us the tape around her huge belly and it was 29 inches, we turned our attention to the length, I held the nose tight to the board and when I heard 56 inches and Jody was clicking pictures we knew we had something special. I held it up for some pictures, as soon as we verified good pics. I said I am ready to put her back. Jason stated about how special this fish was and even mentioned that it was most likely mid 50 pound range or more. He asked what I wanted to do with her and I knew I wanted to put this beautiful fish back in the water where she belongs. It was a great feeling to watch her swim away.
