Posts: 865 | Has anyone tried the made in the USA Avet reel line for musky fishing? looking at the specs it looks like they have three nice lefty models. (good for me) and three gear ratios speeds, the weight is a little less, and the amount of line retrieve per handle turn is about the same or more, some models are two speeds, and the cost is 50% less ....Has anyone tried,or is anyone using these reels...They look solid... Posts: 906 Location: Canada | I bought one last winter and haven't used it yet. Casted it for the first time yesterday in front of the house with a reg dawg (no hooks) and it sailed it pretty effortlessly, cant wait to throw mag dawgs or pounders with it next Saturday.

Posts: 480 | I have the Avet MXJ 5.8 MC lefty, here are the things I learned to get the most out of it. I use 100 lb tuf line on mine spooled only 3/4 capacity. Line will pile up on the spool and create a high spot and rub the reel frame. 65 and 80# were not thick enough for me to cast without overruns. Rotate the reel so the spool is vertical during the cast helps get a little more distance. Straight retrieves are best with as little rod work as possible. It makes slack spots on the spool and affects the next cast in a negative way. Try to eliminate the urge to bomb cast, the reel likes the same length cast and similar/constant tension as possible. Casting big blades all day is possible when I follow these methods. The reel I believe was designed as a saltwater jigging machine, Pspawn makes a good point about adding another trick to this one trick pony.

Posts: 865 | lifeisfun Would the mc model be the one to get for casting. I am leaning towards trying this reel out. They will send you the reel to try out...................If you like it they will send you a new one. and you return the loaner.....thanks Mike Sr.

Posts: 426 Location: Perryville, MO | I use the MC version for casting and can almost betcha it's the better choice for what you'll use the reel for; however, lifeisfun uses both so his opinion will be helpful. When I suggested it's a "one trick pony" I was pointing out the fact that I too only use it for blades (10's and bigger). I know some use it for big rubber and I can imagine (as it was designed) it works great for jigging. Perhaps some of the guys that use it for those purposes can offer more insight. Anyway, it works great for throwing blades. Casts well. And I don't have an issue with line piling up. It takes a bit to get comfortable with. Best advice: commit to using it all day the first time on the water with it and you'll shorten the learning curve a bunch.

My buddy owns 4 Avets of different models that he uses for musky, sturgeon & saltwater & none of them are loud. He has let me borrow MXJ a couple of times & it was quite. Another buddy has the JX that he uses for DC's & that's quite as well.

Steel gears they will be alot more noise then on brass gears

I have 4 MXL 5.8 MCs. 3 in lefties and one in a righty. I ordered some extra pinion bearings from Avet. When my reel starts getting a bit of a grind I started changing them out. I agree with all who have posted above. The absolutely favorite feature for me is the "lever drag". Once a person gets use to using it for fighting fish they will never go back! The lever drag give an amazing amount of control over wild fish and when they hit in the 8 it gives amazing control options. I was without my Avet for a couple of weeks this summer and I lost a nice fish boatside that I am absolutely convinced had I been using the Avet it would have never happened. I also cast double 8s, smaller bucktails, and spinnerbaits with the reel with no problem.

Posts: 865 | Well thanks Guys I Did It........ I Just bought a New Evet MXJ5.8MC-LH. The Silver true left hand reel with cast assist (MC). It really looks nice and looks to be exactly what I was looking for. I just could not see spending $500 on a reel just to throw big blades, and Big Rubber....Spent $199.00. and put the extra $301.00 in my wallet..... My wife is proud of me........ Thanks again for the advise Mike Sr.

Posts: 1100 | When you use them for big rubber baits, do you guide the line with your finger?

Posts: 865 | You basically use your thumb like a level wind and move the line left and right, like you have to do using some large saltwater reels....You get used to it right away....

Posts: 375 | i bought a 2 speed sx for db 10's because i could get it in a lefty version. the reel was amazing as far as how it would crank db 10's thru the water with very little effort. even though it is somewhat smaller and lighter than most other reels out there that can do what it does, it just seemed to sit too high off the rod which made it feel unbalanced to me and with my smaller hands it was uncomfortable to palm. the thing certainly sounded like a coffee grinder right out of the box and when i called the manufacturer all they said was that's the way they are which was not the answer i wanted to hear and sold it a couple months later...

When you have STAINLESS STEEL both main and pinion gears it will sound like a coffee grinder. Very strong gearing but is very loud.

The only reason I haven't started using the Avet for night fishing is the loud gears. I may start however seeing as how it sounds like jingle bells most nights with the multitudes on the water nowadays. The lever drag would be slick at night for those sneaky boatside hits.

Posts: 865 | My Two reels was delivered early this afternoon, and I grabbed one and put it on a new 8'Custom rod I just purchased..Went out in these winds for a few hours to try it....... It was Amazing, Casts Great, ( 80 Powe Pro Slick) No effort to Bulge Double Cowgirls, 33"-38" per revolution, And Lefty, and Not Loud at all.. . Loving..It..$300 cheaper than the Tranx, and Lighter..... guest when was the last time you serviced your reel? Or maybe you have on the wrong Braid, Some of them will make a quite reel sound Noisy....Very abrasive sound.... this reel is definitely not loud by any means ........Call Avet Mike Sr.
