Those prices, it should replace the TE. Did I miss the "C" model? Any improvments or changes other than the drag star moving outboard of the handle?

Posts: 1270 | Interesting where the star drag is compared to all other baitcast reels. The placement and small size of the star wheel seems like it would be hard to adjust "on the go" while fighting a fish but without handeling one it's hard to say for sure. Does it have a sychronized level wind or a disengaging?

The 301 with 5.6 gears looks nice! That should be a versatile reel. Hopefully it has an engaged levelwind... the looks of that small little, plastic drag star is suspect for sure. I guess time will tell. I think with the platinum service, this thing will probably replace both the TE and the B. That is kind of a bummer though... hope i'm wrong.

I've been using one for several months and it's simply remarkable for its' size. I've caught tarpon over 200lbs on it and literally tried to rip the spool out of the reel and it's still perfect. So smooth it doesn't feel like the gears are engaged! Tossed everything under the sun with it including double 13's and it worked just fine. BTW, the level wind disengages, a feature I personally prefer as long as it doesn't create drag gallop or undue stress on the level wind, which does not seem to be the case with this little beauty. Believe me, if this thing hold up to full sized tarpon, muskies will not be an issue. Relocation of drag star is more comfortable due to the effect of less lateral torque against your "non-cranking" hand because of less leverage created by shorter crank shaft. best L

Great to hear from Larry about the new reel! Thanks LD! I'm far from being an engineer, but my take on their relocation of the drag star is that this is Shimano's version of the swept handle design that was made popular by Daiwa and others... It is a pretty decent design in that it saves materials and weight by using a shorter, straight shank handle instead of a longer, heavier "swept" handle. The problem imo is the small size of that little adjustment knob, hopefully it won't be to big a pain to adjust it. Will be interesting to see how big of a difference "X-ship" pinion gear bearings make on these coventional reels... It definitely was a solid upgrade on the shimano spinners.

Will the new Revos be comparable to the new calcutta? Or are they both in their own class?

Or are they both in their own class? revos are low profile, calcutta is a round reel, there is a class difference, that being said the revo is a large low profile and it looks like the new calcutta will be a small round.so preformace may be compareable $100 more for a calcutta if dahlberg says it rocks then it does (imo) i would like to try one

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | The New Calcutta D reels are lower and not as wide as the TE series reels, also have a thumb rest on top of reel so you can plam them just like a low profile reel.
