Yearly Average is all I can go by and the yearly average for Ice out on Tonka is April 15th. Some Bays on the Mound side will open sooner, some great early season crappie fishing over there in the murky shallow bays that warm first.

I thought Hchad was a little overly optimistic when he through that date out last month but man its hard to say it wont be now. That being said I had dinner at Sunset's on Sunday night and people were still kite Boarding on Wayzata bay so its not like its going to be gone by saturday but you have to think shortly there after...

Don't forget that Europe has had its coldest winter on record. Hundreds of people have frozen to death and entire towns have been evacuated over much of eastern Europe. Alaska also had a terribly cold winter. Technically, there was no "global warming". The warm weather in parts of North America has been offset by the extreme cold on the other side of the northern hemisphere. Globally, it is basically an average winter with some regions very warm and some regions very cold. But then again the global warming people claim that the "warming" may actually make things colder. So, if it gets colder or warmer, they are covered. And its all our fault and only a lot of taxes will fix it. It seems there is "global warming" every time the sun comes up.

Remember last fall when the predictions were for a very cold winter with high snowfalls for the midwest and eastern parts of the USA? The forecasters couldn't have been more wrong. They can't predict weather patterns just a month out. But somehow we're supposed to believe predictions that go out many years? The only thing certain about weather patterns, and the resulting climate, is that it will change over time. Might get warmer and might get colder. But it will change.

Speaking of the good 'ole days.............. I recall the Holiday / Johnson Crappie contest being rescheduled numerous times becuse the ice wasn't yet gone in late April.
Whatever happened to that yearly Spring Ritual of the Crappie contest on Tonka? That was the laugh of the year at the boat launch watching the rookies back their rigs for the first time

Its not so much the heat that is going to do the trick, but high winds and rain will really help the process along. We are supposed to get a lot of rain over the next week and there should be some good winds as well. We all know the little bays are going first as they always do. In the main lake there is always a huge chunk that seems to sit there forever after everything else is open. So The more heat, rain and winds we get the better.

There's still well over 6" at Maynard's before the wind blew it off shore yesterday. April 1st for "official" iceoff (main lake).
