Posts: 1224 Location: Okoboji | i wish i could find like 50 hellhound blanks to do customs up on and bring to the show with me.... does anyone have a channel through erc? i would like make 5 patterns and number each one. thanks, jason

Sorry wish I could help you man. When I was a partner in ERC I had boxes of them lying around. As blasphemous as it sounds, I threw out out a couple boxes of them a few years ago when I moved because I didn’t have the room. It would have been unethical for me to do anything else with them. Drifter molds them in house now doubt you’ll find any.

Posts: 567 | WHAT PATTERNS WERE YOU THINKING? DO YOU HAVE ANY PICS? I KNOW THE BLANKS MAY BE HARD TO GET BUT YOU MAY HAVE SOME BUSINESS AT LEAST WITH RE-PAINTING. PUT SOME PICS UP AND YOU MAY GET SOMEONES INTEREST. WERE YOU THINKING A SHOW THIS YEAR OR NEXT?

Posts: 1224 Location: Okoboji | I have more than enough baits to paint. Between the two bait companies I shoot for and all my friends throwing stuff my way..I figured I would just do some for the show and try to turn em for some fishing slush fund money

What two companies do you spray for? You got any pics of your stuff?

Will one of the colors you paint for the shows be the "baddest on earth"?? I'm pretty sure drifter already has a lemonhead. How much will you sell a painted hellhound for? I have seen some guys sell them here on this site for upwards of 35$, but the paint jobs on those are top notch, maybe a little more than the "baddest on earth". Not saying anything bad just saying it will be tuff to sell baits for a decent profit at 15$ per blank if you don't have pretty killer detailed paint work. I am certain there is going to be a good amount of competition there too.

Posts: 1207 Location: Pigeon Forge TN. | Kodiak is a very good painter and can put "knock out" work on just about anything. I have a lure with a pattern that I call the "Baddest on Earth" simply because of the amount of fish it has nailed not because it is any better than anyone else's paint job. I see what you mean about the wording of Kodiaks phrase, but even I don't seriously think he was trying to put anyone down. He is proud of what he does and I have to say I can't blame him.

Posts: 1202 Location: Money, PA | Hey, I just love looking at the various talents around here...and as far as forums are concerned, I have never found more agreeable, friendly and helpful forums than that of lure making. If I ask to see ones work, it is because I'm truely interested in seeing the work/talents and NOT trying to call one out to the table on anything. Sharing our ideas, techniques and workmanship is what this is all about really. A wealth of information, ideas and pleasure is what I find in here and I truely appreciate it.

Posts: 1207 Location: Pigeon Forge TN. | Kodiak, No offense taken bud. Just show more of your work Even as a painter, I like to see what other painters come up with. The talent on this board is awesome to say the least. ShutNFish, Well said my man. I agree completely. I think this MF board is the best out there. And I am not not Knocking the others but this is where I go the most.

Posts: 114 Location: Central Wisconsin | I'm still trying to figure out what's so bad about an epoxy top coat. Good baits catch fish regardless of whats on top. Look at the repaint market for example. Sounds like you repaint a lot of factory finishes that have worn. Just curious,

Posts: 1224 Location: Okoboji | anything you put on a bait will weigh it down and change the action.. i repaint worn finishes and i do sand the good finish off and put what the person wants on it and hit it with 2k auto clear...i feel (opinion) that it holds up better. I know stan uses auto clear. and i feel (opinion) that a couple coats of 2k wieghs a lot less than epoxy but i could be wrong Edited by kodiak 2/28/2012 9:55 AM

Look at the repaint market for example. Sounds like you repaint a lot of factory finishes that have worn. Just curious, Who are you talking to? As for "good baits catch fish, regardless of topcoat"....you are certainly correct there. However, in todays muskie bait market, when a consumer pays upwards of $25 to $40 for a lure; there will be certain expectations in quality and durability. I personally feel there is no more durable topcoat than an epoxy coating and I've worked with both. Edited by ShutUpNFish 2/28/2012 10:06 AM

Posts: 114 Location: Central Wisconsin | Just a general comment. I too use epoxy and factor in its weight when designing a lure. I think an autoclear coat on a wood bait is more apt to fail when subjected to temp variations. Plastic baits... I cant speak to that as I don't work with those. Good conversation though, I would like to hear more experiences on both, if its OK to use Jason's thread.

Posts: 531 | I have several Hellhounds with etex topcoats and every one runds as good as factory finished hellhounds. Some of those have three coats of etex and they all with out any noticable change in action.

Posts: 1207 Location: Pigeon Forge TN. | I agree with ShutupNFish on the epoxy. I, too, have used both. I just don't have the room and time to work with the epoxy anymore as my mancave is limited in space to work in. I use my auto two part on everything from wood to plastic and have been told that it holds up very well. Once in a while I forget to put an extra layer on if I have lures hanging all over the drying rack and if they let me know if it peels, I will take care of it pronto. I haven't had any trouble with my lures. That's how I do my experimentation.

Posts: 1202 Location: Money, PA | Now, I do have to say that one of the nicest auto clearcoat finishes I've seen out there is the Wiley.... Dale applies about 3 to 4 heavy coats of clear to his lures and they look as close to the epoxy as I've seen. I have not seen your work up close Stan, but am assuming you do the same.

Posts: 1224 Location: Okoboji | it is more cost effective also you can get a gallon of omni production clear that with reducer/hardener that makes over 2.5 sprayable gallons for under 100bucks. plus it saves time and goes on perfect everytime shooting it,,,the downsize is the toxicity...i cannot stress proper respirators and ventilation enough. and one more thing is you dont have to turn it. feel free go ahead and discuss the two i would like to know everyones experiences too, i use both also.

I'd really like to see some of that super detail work you do though, whenever you have some time....Thanks.
