Leaves me out, I am just a painter, I don't make baits.
There are a lot of very good ones out there.

I hear ya Stan, I’m more of a bait maker than a painter.  Maybe we could have shared time with a trophy? Like the STANley cup – ha ha.   I have work off next week and may spray something up for it.  As long as you have a deep epoxy coat with some glitter in it you should be in the running – lol

Thanks guys!

I am just starting to put a bait together. I still have not figured out what color yet. I have had a couple suggestions of submitting my Black Spotted Sucker. I was thinking possibly a walleye. I think I will make both, and see which one turns out better.

Will there be catagories among catagories? I've been making quite a few CA Redwood gliders that only require some belly paint. Is it strictly a beauty contest or do they have to go through a tank test? Just wondering, because if I have to make THE BEST LURE IN THE WORLD, I better start. How many can I enter? Gliders, Surface, Crankbait? I'm so confused.....but it's gonna be cool as hell.

How do you guys interpret rules #1& #6?  Can I enter a lure in both the crankbait and jerkbait categories or do I need to decide which one I want to enter?

Hi Guys,

Sorry for any confusion about the rules. Trying to make it as simple as possible and we would like only 1 lure submitted per contestant, and we would like the lures sent to me by the 31st of January so we can be prepared and display the lures effectively and know what kind of space we are going to need. If you do submit a lure you still will need to pay to get into the show, but remember for each paid admission you can vote for your favorite lure and also all of the proceeds are going to benefit kids musky fishing events. I hope this helps, and please email me with any questions, we are open to any suggestions and want to promote these amazing baits while still having fun and benefiting kids fishing events.

You guys have made it pretty tough on us guys. Picking one lure is tough enough, but after going through my basement, I've found several contenders, but all of them have hook rash and some have tooth marks, that's why they are my favorites. Will people be able to handle them? I have other lures for consideration that have Kameleon scale or cheek patterns that look different from every angle, hang them on a wall and they lose that effect. Maybe I'll have to go out to the garage and paint up a couple of fresh ones. I'm glad it's warm in the painting room.....decisions, decisions? :/

I thought about that and a stand or display would detract from the features and hard work you put into a bait. We may think of that for the future and will take that suggestion into consideration, but for this year we are going to stick to just the lures. We will have the lures displyed on a wall with velcro and will be able to be taken down and examined under supervision of course. This will allow the voters to check out the smallest of details.

For the 'Suggestion Box' for next year. Don't limit it to one lure, but limit it to one type and allow multiple entries in that catagory. If fact, make it a rule that you must submit 3 lures in the catagory that you choose. I have lures from 6-12 inches in a myriad of body styles and colors. I tried to narrow it down yesterday and wound up with 15. Do I get penalized for a beautiful 6" lure because it gets lost in the array of larger lures. Do I submit a 10 Smallmouth made from figured Redwood with very little paint that looks just like a Smallie or will that be viewed as cheating? Stencils vs No stencils. Fins and gill plates vs a Red Head Jailbird? :/

Seems to be advantageous for local bait makers, good if you like home cooking. There is nothing to gain for non local and/or high end bait makers. How about a space at all the big muskie shows per season for a popularity contest? Or a panel of qualified judges? For a world championship, fairness should at least be considered.

I like the overall idea of the competition. I do have one thing that is keeping me from slaving away in the basement:

It seems like the opportunity exists for this to be more of a regional "popularity" contest than an actual competition. What I mean by that, Let's say that Beav finally makes up his mind on what lure to submit. He tells all of his friends and Muskies Inc buddies to vote for him. I send in a a lure from somewhere other than the Milwaukee area. I am playing at a loss already.

Have you thought about having it be a rotating competition? Maybe do the rounds of all of the shows. Or have it be an actual judged competition. have Guys that are known as topnotch lure builders. You could even have the judges be specialist. Like larry Dahlberg be the innovation judge, Joe Peterson judge artistic quality, Jim Saric judge the action, etc etc

I would sign up for that.

Yes, judges would be better than a popularity show.....Let me make it clear that I have more friends than enemies, so I'm not at an advantage in Milwaukee or anywhere. Submit 'anonymous' lures to be judged by a panel of guys including guys from The Basement! We know how hard it is to build a lure that lasts, has good action and will catch fish. If it's a beauty contest, I'm putting boobs on mine. This is no easy task, but a great idea. I applaud the guys who came up with it, but think they should spend a week in the basement post/contest looking for input. But just like building lures can be too much work at times, we have to make it a friendly arena for all envolved.

Given the format, yes it will be somewhat of a popularity contest, but if it were a panel of judges one could say musky politics are involved.  It’s the first year and things will evolve as it continues.  I’m curious to know what does this ballot looks like and what’s the “average Joe” going to be looking for and judging on? I do wish you could enter more than one bait though.  I can’t decide if the intricate details of 3D surfacing with a 1/64” ball cutter on my crankbait would be more appreciated that the overall complex geometries of my jerkbait.  Well I’m in it for the fun so whatever happens, happens. Good luck everyone!

When and where is the auction?  Online?
