| whats a good pair of sunglasses? are all polarized glasses the same pretty much? |

| I've got 2 pairs of the Costa Del Mar Fathoms with the wave 400 glass lenses. One gray/blue mirror for saltwater and super bright days and the amber/backwater green lens for cloudy days. Samantha has the Fathoms with the 580 lens, and wears them everywhere. We both tried on a crapload of other sunglasses.... Ocean Waves, Oakley, H30... Not sure there's a lot of difference in the lenses, but you want something you can wear for 12 hours. Cheapos will work, but you only get one set of eyes.
Some things in life you just don't skimp on. Eye protection is one of them. Tires are another, but that's a topic for another thread. |

| Switched over to Revos this year and love them. All of your big names are gonna make good glass. Biggest thing I can say is to find the pair that fits your face the best. The less light that can come in through the top or reflect off the water up through the bottom the better. |

| Oakleys are pretty good. I went with the Flak Jacket (pictured below). The lenses are removable, so you can switch the lenses as conditions change, or replace only the lenses if something happens and they were to get scratched. I didn't really take into consideration how much additional lenses were prior to purchasing. In my mind I was going to buy two or three different lens colors, but I have yet to do so.
I have two complaints about Oakleys. 1) The temples go straight back, rather than curve around your ear, which makes it a pain to wear hats. 2) I have a tremendous amount of difficulty cleaning the lenses (and I use their cleaning kit), and the parts that don't get cleaned always seem to fog up.
If I were you I would shop around for some Coastas. I don't hate Oakleys, but I will not buy another pair without owning at least one pair of Coastas. I've tried other peoples and they are amazing; it's night and day for clarity. And, they offer a wider selection of lens materials, so they can be worked into almost any price range. No matter what brand you buy or what color lenses you get remember they aren't x-ray vision glasses. They significantly improve how well you can see, but they are not magical.

Location: minocqua, wi. | if you are an old man and need rx glasses, get them ... i'd waited and waited and then almost wrecked my boat and finally got myself a high-quality pair of prescription polarized glasses and absolutely loved them! ... and, in most cases you get what you pay for. test is all day wear throughout the week and come away saying you absolutely love them. if you haven't said that ever, then you probably haven't had a good pair on. |

Location: Right behind you (tap, tap) BOOO | I stumbled on these one day jacking around on the internet - found some at a decent price (the big auction site)... Wow - the polarization is excellent - but what really adds is the fototec technology, the lens have the ability to change shade based on light in intensity (like transition lens) very nice indeed. No more wishing you had multiple glasses based on the time of day, overcast or just plain gray outside.
Open water green is the lens to get.

Location: On the Niagara River in Buffalo, NY | I have WileyX Sunglasses and I'm very happy with them.I would say one thing if you need presciption ground into your lense not every frame can handle the thickness or curviture for your prescription.Also make sure the lense your getting ground to your prescription has the max polarization,anti glare coating and anti scratch coating.Usualy the lenses have to be polycarbonate to make the sharp curviture of wrap around sunglasses.Mine have prescription for distance and no line bifocals for up close.But then again I'm lucky my wife is an Optician!

| 1 vote for Smith's. That's coming from a moto guy. Smith Goggle's haven't failed me in 20 years. I also wanted something different than everyone else sporting Oakley's.

| Like Sled, I need prescription sun glasses and this year I went to Lens Crafters when they had a sale and got a pair of Ray Ban, with wrap around progressive bi-focals, in polarized glass. The have been great, let in very little light and with the bi-focals I can tie knots without having to take them off. On sale they cost me no more than my regular glasses did at my doctor's office. I had prescription sunglasses before but these do a better job of keeping out glare from the sides while on the lake. |

| I own Native's, Maui Jim's, and Costa's and my favorite pair are the Costa's. The 580 green mirror lenses are awesome! I wear them pretty much all the time unless it's super bright out and I need some more tint, then I go with the Maui Jim's.
Oh, and if you want to save a pile of money check out prices online. I got my $250 pair of Costas for $150 to my door.

I have owned Costa Del Mar's for the past 5 years and will not wear anything else. These fit great, are lightweight, easy to clean and can be worn all day without hurting. |

| For those of you that really like you glasses, is it because they are comfortable, or because you feel you can see into the water beter? I have a $20 pair of polarized glasses that are confortable, but i sometimes wish I could see into the water better. Do the expensive glasses block the glare better? |

Yes, you do get what you paid for with sunglasses.By the way, Maui Jim's customer service is phenominal. I broke the nose putting a sweatshirt on one time and had a very quick turnaround. Unfortunately they overtightenwd a screw and cracked the lenses...had then back in 2 days. 3rd issue was a warped arm from the heat. I went to their headquarters (lived in the same town) and they replaced both while I waited with no questions. I would buy either again without hesitation. The most important thing for me is fit. I used to have polarized clips for my glasses....at 50 MPH air getting to my eyes make it almost impossible to see...stay safe with proper fitting sunglasses. |

Yes and no. I can't give a definitive answer here, but generally speaking, I feel as though I see more fish than others in my boat (they wear generic fit-overs as they have glasses). That could be more of an angle thing, paying more attention, et cetera.
With that said, I have a pair of $5 Berkley's that I purchased at Walmart for everyday use (driving, working, et cetera) and I have tried them occasionally on the water. They aren't awful. I would obviously take my Oakleys over them any day, but they're actually pretty good, especially for the price tag. I would never not wear glasses on purpose, but as a rule of thumb, get the best you can afford to.
As far as just seeing structure goes, I don't think there's a huge difference. The best advice I was given when I was looking at glasses was to know the water and have a trained eye. Combine that with the best advice I can give: they aren't X-Ray glasses. I made the mistake of overestimating their capabilities. I think they're better than standard glasses, but they aren't magical. |

Location: Pickering, ON | Just got my first pair of Rx sunglasses, and while shopping learned an important thing that should be considered if you need prescription:
Do not waste your money on Costas, as the only thing Costa you will be getting is the frame. They do not have their own lab and farm out Rx lenses.
This doesn't mean their glasses are junk; just that their prescriptions are not worth the spend. If you don't need a prescription, they are stellar.
If you need prescription, consider Maui Jim or Oakley, both of which have their own labs. |

They're tough as tanks, cut the glare and sun out as well as any other sunglasses I have ever worn. Testimony to their toughness: 3X last summer I got hit in the face while wearing them in volleyball tourneys, not a lick of difference in them....eventhough my nose was bleeding and I had a minor concussion at least one time. |
