Finally saved up enough to take a trip to Canada for a week of musky fishing in September. Where do you suggest and why? Trip for 2 people and a boat will be needed. Thanks

If this is a once in a lifetime trip I would go to AML and hire a guide for as many days as you can afford.

an actual budget makes a big difference in the recommendations, as there isn't a flat rate for Canada trips.

You looking for numbers or a big fish location? Do you want the classic musky scenery (Canadian Shield)? How far are you willing to travel? Casting or trolling?

Looking for numbers with some size. Driving from Chicago and distance is no matter. This will more than likely be a one time thing. Just looking to go casting, have a good time, and no headaches.

Check out Bill Sandy's Blackhawk Island Camp. Thier Resort is on a 12-acre island five miles north of Angle Inlet, they will pick you up from Young's Bay Resort, ( WWW..blackhawkislandcamp.com. ) or call # 218-386-1099 . Bill and Cindy should be at the chicago muskie show. Bill Sandy has been guiding musky's on lake of the woods for more then 30 years , fish with him and you will see muskies. they have 17' lund boats that have two Lowrance graphs, trolling motor. and 50hp motors. I would probably check out Lake of the Woods if that is what you're looking for. If you want to just chase BIG fish then I would go guided everyday at AndyMyers Lodge.

I finally went to AML this year. My son and I had a great time. I wish that I would have done it years ago. The guides take great care of you and Herbie creates a great atmosphere in camp. We plan on doing it again this fall.

I would chose Andy meyers lodge. Steve runs a top notch camp and has some great guides and every one on his staff will help you in any way they can to put you on fish. They also can take you to lakes near by if you want to catch high numbers of fish. Fly in or by truck.
Good luck

Hard to argue agianst AML... Another option is Witch Bay Camp on LOTW. ITs about 45 minutes south of Kenora on LOTW. They run a great place and Russ Wayre the resident guide will set you up with both places to fish on the lake and where to stay aways from for safty purposes whether you use him or not. THis year he spent an hour going over my map on a day he was on vacation. Steve and Gail (owners) run a 1st Rate Operation...

Been looking at Sandys Blackhawk Island Camp. Looks like a good place. Do you guys think I could get away with getting a guide for just a couple days, insted of the whole week?

One thing I didn't know until I got there was about Eagle Lake was that there is no night fishing. That really bummed me out because I really enjoy fishing in the dark. I wish I had seen that beforehand.

I went to Andy Myers lodge for a "one time trip" in 2007. And 2008, and 2009, and 2010, and 2011... Going to AML is like coming home. I look forward to it all season, and I miss it as I drive away.

To answer your question....absolutely. Get a few days with Bill, have him mark up a map, or pick some "fishy" looking shorelines runs and cast away. There's a ton of fish up there in the Angle, you would get by much easier on LOTW without a guide then on Eagle

http://www.frolanderresort.com/ is one of the nicest camps on LOTW, and if you hire Dan Gibbins you will have one of the best guides on LOTW

why would you get by better on lotw than eagle without a guide, just wondering, never fished either

It's a simple answer....LOTW has muskies everywhere that looks good and Eagle has lots of good looking water that is fishless !

KrazyK kind of puts it bluntly but that's basically pretty much correct...
In my experience you can basically cruise around LOTW and use your eyes and read shoreline in new water and find and catch fish, I've barely had a spot pointed out to me on a map yet alone even hired a guide...
Using that same tactic on Eagle can make for a very long week. You need to have a better understanding of what's going on beneath the surface on Eagle. I can freely admit that without having the help of Steve's guides on AML teach me how to properly fish that lake in my first few visits I highly doubt my catch rate or quality would be the same. If you do choose Eagle AML is the way to go, that's about as good as a professional fishing camp gets in terms of helping anglers

Looks like I'm going to LOTW. I'll talk to some venders at the Chicago show, and pick from there. Thanks, a lot to think about.

You can't blame Eagle Lake or the guides at AML for my lack of 50" fish. Hooked and lost several, failed to set the hook a few times, lost a couple before I learned that hooks aren't sharp enough on new lures, took the bait away from a few, scared a few away, and even hit one with my rod in the figure 8. I'd have half a dozen over 50 if I knew what I was doing when I first started going up there. Despite all the bumbling, I still managed a 45", 46" 47", 48" and 49.5" up there, along with several in the 38"-43" range. That's not bad considering I was still learning how to cast and do figure 8's my first trip up there. In hindsight, it's probably not the best place to learn how to muskie fish, but if you know what you're doing, you'll do well.

you can't go wrong on LOTW tho you are talking Sept which I'm not sure what the fishing is like on LOTW then...suspect all rock fishing...I've been to Eagle and last summer I went to LOTW for the 1st time...very different..our boat in 4 days (2 guys) put 23 to 50.5" in the boat, and had hooks into another 10... that's a good total for 3-5 boats on Eagle for a week...imo the fish on LOTW in the 43 to 50 range are just as heavy as Eagle fish...and there are more of them, and they eat like crazy in the 8...another option is to hit Moosehorn Lodge and hire their guides on Lac Seul for your week...Sept can be hit and miss..you get a bad week / cold front type weather and your week could be shot... if you go to LOTW and have the option try end of July ...

Def. agree with Brad, if you can get out there in the summer I think that's a much better call. I have been going in September the last 5-6 years or so. I've caught bigger fish in Sept but far fewer in numbers and contacts most times..There's so many variables that can make or break a week in September as opposed to July..availability of good weeds, cold fronts, big winds, hot weather which makes for comfortable but slow fishing that time of year, etc...There's never any guarantees in Canada for weather in a week but July seems to be the best chance for stable weather and fishing....I'll personally take fishing in shorts and a tshirt all day over 4 layers of shirts, heavy pants, and gloves

As a few people have hinted at. Sometimes you'll run into a nasty bluegreen algae bloom on the LOTWs in September. Doesn't always happen and you can still catch fish, but it's harder that say July. Just a head's up.
