| This is a story I would like to share not only for the size of the fish, but the release story. This fish got lined wrapped around her while I was reeling her in and used alot of energy and had its equalibrium messed up more than usual.I quickly took a pic and put her back in the water and she had no stregth and couldnt get upright, there were 2to3 footers as well, we continued to do this for about 20 minutes and nothing. at this point we had to do something else because the waves were to big and I didnt want to run the risk of drowning her. I filled the livewell up and put her in there and recirclulated the water for prob close to an hour as i kept my hand on her the whole time so she wasnt rocking around. She was gradually gaining strength and moving her fins around and her color was great and at no time was there any blood. after an hour we put her back in the water and she immediatley regained her strength and was upright swimming on top for about 10 minutes and soon dove her nose down and kicked her tail over and over down she went!!! I sat in the area for another 10 minutes and no sign of her. This was such a great ending to a great catch.

Location: The desert | Cool story. Did you stop fishing for the day? Only reason I ask, is that when putting a fish in your livewell it generally is counted toward your bag limit. Most big musky regulations only allow 1 in the bag per day, thus your limit would have been filled for the day and continuing fishing would technically be against the law. I'm not saying you purposely were breaking the law, just a heads up. Honestly after a fish like that, I'd quit for the day and go have a beer. |

| something tells me a warden knowing the specifics isn't going to write a ticket for this...we did the same thing w a 54.5 a couple yrs ago in Minny and the last thing I was concerned about when we put it in my livewell was whether or not my buddy could keep fishing...and he did...and we caught more big ones... ; )

All depends on the warden/CO. I don't disagree with you, but I also know several who frankly don't care and follow the letter of the law and would instantly write a ticket for this. |

Location: N.FIB | if one guy is fishing that should be ok,the guy who caught the fish wasn`t fishing and that fish would count as his one for the day as long as it`s in the live well,thats what I would think. |

As with many I know as well. But just as many would. Just a friendly reminder. Don't think I said I wanted the guy to get a ticket. And I think it is kind of a dumb rule, at least regarding muskies. |

| dont you guys have anything better to do then harass a guy for trying to let a fish go lol...............outrageous. GREAT FISH jake and thats awsome you guys got her to go back! by the way they spent alot of time while not even fishing to get this fish back.

Location: North Metro - Twin Cities | Nice job Jake, we had to do the same thing with a 52.5 x 25.75 I got yesterday. Handled her well, put her back and she couldn't keep herself up. Took turns holding her for 20-min or so then made the decision to put her in the 60-inch live well. When we put her in she was still having trouble staying up but we kept the aerator on and you could actually see her gradually get stronger. We were at then end of our trip anyway so we slowly motored back toward our cabin watching her close. When we let her go, had she rolled over again one time I would have had to make the really tough call but when she got back in the lake she never did. We watched her swim in the shallows for another 20-mins or so and wished her the best. At close to two hours by far the longest release process I've ever been involved with but I really didn't want to bring her home. Done this successfully with largemouth many times and assuming you have a live well that the fish can fit in it's worth a shot. CM

| Don't know about other states, but in Wisconsin the interpretation is if the fish is put in the live well and then the boat is moved under power, then you are done for the day. If you don't move the boat under power you are OK. |

| As far as I know - not every state is like WI. I don't think MN has any regulations requiring you to quit angling once you have reached your daily/possession limit. There are regulations about culling/sorting but not about fishing after you have reached your limit.

So it is ok for muskie anglers to break the law, but it isn't ok for someone to harvest a muskie according to the law? Got it. |

| Great fish Jake! And Chris!! Had a similar release situation last week. Unable to use the livewell due to it's size(and the size of the fish) , I got out of the boat and worked with the fish for what seemed like an eternity. Minimal handling and she just wouldn't stay upright. Past my boots in the water(#*^@ rocks!!), in a calm little cup along the shorline , she made her recovery. Her stomach seemed a bit distended and I literally ran my hand along the belly, toward the front of the fish and the crazy fish burped! Air bubbles came from her mouth and she finally stayed upright and swam away. Whatever it takes......anybody make a mobile boot dryer???? |

Location: Warroad, Mn | Ontario has a regulation that speciifally allows you to continue fishing after you have your limit. This from the 2011 Ontario Regs. Doug Johnson Generally, daily catch limits include all fish that are retained for any period of time and not immediately released. Anglers fishing from a boat may now catch, hold, and selectively live release more walleye, northern pike, largemouth or smallmouth bass than the daily limit, provided: (a) the fish are held in a livewell with a mechanical aerator operating at all times, (see Anglers Guide, page 8, for livewell requirements) (b) the fish comply with any applicable size limits, (c) the Sport or Conservation Fishing Licence daily catch and retain limits for walleye or northern pike are not exceeded at any one time, (d) no more than six largemouth or smallmouth bass (or any combination) caught under a Sport Fishing Licence are retained at any one time, and (e) the Conservation Fishing Licence catch and retain limits for largemouth and smallmouth bass (or any combination) are not exceeded at any one time. Anglers are reminded to closely monitor the condition of fish held in a livewell. Only fish that are in such a condition that they will survive may be released (see Tips on Live Release of Fish, page 10). Releasing a fish that will not survive and allowing the flesh of that fish to be wasted is an offence. Any fish not live-released are part of your daily catch and retain limit.
