Location: Hayward, WI | Wow! I'm in the Hayward area also and like Flambeauski and Fygr8, we have nothing. Not a flake or sprinkle. I'm not against a little snow for hunting, but I don't need to sludge through 10 inches of it next weekend for the last weekend of my bow season! I'm sure most of that will melt down, but you must really be getting hammered over there.

I'm going to hunt the opener and I'm also taking the boat. Fishing in Rusk Co. I think its going to be cutting it close but its worth a try. The last two season Nov. has been very good for me. |

Location: North/Central WI | I will be up fishing in Vilas from 11/12 - 11/20...not too worried about freeze-up but I stick to the big lakes this late in the year. I also fish on Thanksgiving every year and plan on doing it again. If the lakes you plan to target are larger (500+ acres) and deep (good percentage over 40') I don't think freeze-up will be a problem for opening gun weekend. |

I was wondering about this. How much warmer do you think the larger lakes are? As much as 5 degrees maybe?
In my limited time musky fishing, I have yet to put a fish in the boat in November. I am planning to get out 2-3 more times and am on the fence in terms of hitting the big lake, or a couple of the smaller lakes in my area.
What is the main reason for choosing a larger lake this time of year? Simply bigger fish potential? Sorry, lots of questions..

In my experience, larger lakes (say 1000+ acres) that are deep (max depth of 60' or more with large basins) can easily be 3-5+ degrees warmer than a 300 acre lake that is 30' deep this late in the year. Larger lakes are also more affected by the wind, which can help keep them open even when surface temperatures are on the brink of freezing. The reason I fish only these lakes in November is that many of them contain cisco which are spawning right now. Cisco lakes generally have more large, fat muskies than non-cisco lakes. The action can be slow at times but the big fish are worth it.
