I talked to Steve who runs the show last week, it will be a competition between the reel vendors to see who has the fastest reel. Unless I misunderstood him but this will hopefully end most of those reel question threads lol.

I highly doubt a contest over one weekend will prove any claims of durability. On the other hand, if a given reel fails during competition it will surely disprove them !

This contest will not be a perfect test, because there will be variations in the person(s) doing the reeling. However, if they attach the reels to some sort of automated cranking machine (and eliminate human performance), then it could be a better test.

Ultimately, the feet-per-crank is probably the best metric to use.

I do like the idea of having people do it, but I say have guides bring in their double 10 stuff and have them see how fast they can get it moving. Most, if not all, have the lastest and greatest set ups and I'm sure they already have what the vendors will be bringing in, let the guides have a shoot out.

In relation to the machine to take out human error, guides I think are about the closest thing you'll get to a machine, they pound the water day in, day out and are basically machines on the water.

My thoughts on it, bring the guides in and let them test out their set ups and see who can burn a double 10 the fastest.

Yeah, I'm thinking a deep-dish pizza eating contest would be more interesting.

Sounds like something they'd do in Illinois. At least Milwaukee has a custom lure building contest this year, and beer. Which will be way cooler than this, I don't see the point in finding out "the fastest" dbl 10 reel.

How about a contest to determine which reel is the most efficient? Like how many pounds of force exerted on the handle to move a d10 5 MPH. Or how many calories burned.

I'd say...drain the pool, put freshwater in with a 50" Musky, and see what speed she likes....wouldnt that win the competition....

Anybody I know with any kind of a decent reel can literally "burn through" the "burn" just from cranking TOO FAST! Therefore it is more a function of the particular set of blades, angle and steadines (not the reel) that will determine the maximum speed attained just prior to "breaking" the surface. Marty Forman

Hahaha. I think each "race" should last about 13-14 hours. That would be the true test of who's the "best" at burning blades.

PS I don't think Hamernick would win. I think it would be a tie between Hoyer and someone else. Hahahahaha.

See you in Chicago.

I think it is what it is, just a contest. Cool enough, it will get people talking at the show and draw a crowd for the vendors. What is lame are all the people getting bent out of shape over something that hasn't even happened yet.
