Location: New Hope MN | Owning a boat is expensive and keeping it up takes a lot of time!
I’m curious how you and your fishing buddies split expenses on each outing.
Do you guys just split gas or does the boat owner get free gas or maybe breakfast lunch? Just curious how others handle it.

| local trips I just "eat it" if they offer fine but I was probably going fishing anyway - Several day trips I simply split gas (boat and truck) - I dont expect lunch or anything extra. |

The way prices are getting these days I really wish people would split costs with me. Problem is the people I usually take with are broke so they couldnt even chip in. I do really enjoy the company so I dont mind too much, but $100 in gas a trip gets a little hard to swallow. |

Location: Hopefully on the water | We will usually switch boats depending on where we are fishing. this time i take mine, next time they take theirs. Or if we are in area for a while we pitch in towards gas with each other. In the end it generally comes out pretty even for us. maybe a beer and lunch here and there but pretty even. i think it ihelps when you fish with others that have a boat as I feel they feel know what it takes for gas, maintinance, and getting the boat ready. Or if I was already planning on going for the day it isn't a huge deal. |

Then they are obviously more talented than expected and I generally consider paying them a guide fee just for the lesson...but that usually passes. |

| My fishing buddies don't own boats for the most part.
On long trips, it is polite to offer as that is what I would do. Most people do offer to split. Unfortunately, some people "forget" and I feel cheap asking or suggesting.
That person does not get invited back. I don't need takers in my life.
People who don't own boats usually don't realize how much a trip costs.

Location: Contrarian Island | on home waters I don't ask for $$ but like them to bring the beer / snacks... when we go on trips we pretty much just throw an equal amount into the "kitty" and all expenses from the time we leave until the time we come home are out of there ... makes it simple and easy and no haggling over who bought what..... |

| splitting gas, lodging, and food costs is pretty standard stuff. i can't imagine expecting someone to cover more than that just because we happen to be in my boat. i own my boat for me; if i use it on a trip with someone else, that's my choice. if you're looking for more than that because "it's expensive to own a boat", then it's time for you to go get a guide license. |

| I take my nephew, he pays very little, eats all the food, and, catches all the fish!!!
I dont mind though, he is family!
But, he is out of school and employed now, so i may ask for a little summin, summin, this year..

Location: Land of the Musky | I pay in lures. lots and lots of lures.... My buddy has a few Lakewood boxes full now because he takes me out so much. He has a much nicer boat than my little Northwoods 16' too so that does not hurt. Although his boat eats up a lot more gas On longer trips I always split gas, food, lodging with him. 4 hour drive cost a LOT with his truck and boat. |

Location: Blaine, MN | Gas money, beer, leaches, all are great forms of payment when taking my rig... usually all I expect is a simple thank you though. goes a long way in my book. however when I fish with others I usually try to throw enough cash to at least cover the gas the boat consumes. My brother tried to pay the boat registration without me knowing one year, that was a nice gesture and appreciated immensely. |

WI (Minocqua) frequently throughout the year I usually invite one of a few good fishing buddies to accompany and fish with me. Majority of my fishing friends are people whom I've met and become close with through online fishing forums in the last 5 years while some I've known since childhood. I've fished and brought a lot of different people with me over the years. Always like to give friends the opportunity to fish with me.
We usually do a 50/50 split in terms of gas for the car, food expenses and so forth because it's economical for both. Another tradeoff is that since I am the boat owner and make sure to ready it every night in preparation for the next morning by filling it up with gas and making sure the batteries are charged they handle all of the late night dinners and get to grill and then do the clean-up! Lodging is all on me obviously since it's mine+family's house. Meanwhile some friends are more generous and appreciative than others as they sometimes handle all of the gas for vehicle, food expenses and whatnot. I don't ask for it, but they realize what a deal they're getting when they don't have to spend $600 a week to stay at a rental cottage and when they're catching fish with me from several of the area's lakes. I occasionally drive and take my car but for the most part I go with them in their trucks and SUV's that are already rigged with hitches. Plus they have 4WD which I lack 
I have had times when lesser friends have literally begged me to bring them with. I have obliged and they willingly pay for everything. Doesn't mean they will be joining me again, however - usually they're the ones who play you.
I guess the most important thing in fairness is having the friend or person joining you be thankful for the opportunity, and at least giving some acknowledgment while enjoying the time. And with my family allowing for them to join me at our cabin it's an even better thing if they help me around the house with cleaning up or any small household chores that need to get done. Friends like these will always be fishing with me....... I've had "friends" take advantage of me in the past while fishing and you can bet they will never join me again. Not getting any thank-yous when you return home is the worst insult.

| I have a great fishing buddy then I have one leach < "UNION IRONWORKER" that is good guy but cheapo that won't go again. One buddy splits gas or always tries to leave cash in my truck. I drove a dodge gaser early this season and really appreciated the little bit to throw in the tank. On a local trip "1 hour one way atleast" I usually spend $60 boat and truck. By the way my buddy that is always contributing goes to Canada every year and he is going with 4 of my Legend Rod combos and 2 lakewoods full of baits plus nice new net. So if you are considerate it will go a lot farther than el cheapo which will be sitting at the house the rest of this year. Hell one time he asked me to buy his fishing license at the lake entry gate because he was broke right after he bought 2 packs of smokes and a can of skoal!! Everybody has that one guy that goes with them.

| here on st clair with larger boats ,the captain has boat well fee,s plus marina gas. we will normally all pay the fuel bill. i personally leave a few baits per trip. these are baits that have just proven themselves. road trips we put cash each in 1 envelope. one guy takes care of marina fee,s,gas etc. .. works for us. running a 350 iii/o normally cost 10gph running on plane in a larger boat. so you see it can cost folks.
remember after ya boat a 50 its priceless. |

All the gas, a few drinks after and helping me fix some thinkgs up too. I felt a little uneasy about it. I took my buddy Doc to Cass last weekend (got his first ski FYI). Doc, told me "it's your boat & truck so i have to pay my half (All Gas, food, drink)." He went on to explain the cost of upkeep and storage and how he is getting the better deal. It made me feel pretty cheap, but he refused to take my money for anything. |

| All I ask for is to have my partner split the gas 50/50 on day trips. I have one buddy that goes as far as to pay for the gas and has bought lunch. I truly appreciate that but would never expect it. Then I have another buddy that will not chip in unless asked. That I do not understand. We usually take my boat and truck so I feel that splitting those expenses 50/50 is only appropriate. On extended trips, everything is split. Remember, it is your vacation too and you should not be expected to cover everything for someone else.

Location: 31 | When I meet someone at the launch, I don't worry about splitting the cost in my boat because I'm already there and fishing anyway. On longer excursions (the last 15 years or so) we typically use my motorhome and boat...it's sweet, but expensive to operate and maintain. With that rig I typically insist on splitting plus $50/100 for maintenance depending on the mileage. Most people automatically cover the majority of the gas, which is still a fantastic deal for them because there is no lodging expense. About 10 years ago I fished with a newer guy who (after settling up in his driveway) started counting his money in a worried fashion, I asked him if everything was okay and he said; "yeah, no problem I hardly spent anything" and put his money back in his wallet. It was the last time we fished together... I simply don't need to fish with cheap skates like that.
Knowing how expensive equipment is to buy and maintain, I try to typically cover "almost" all the gas expenses when using somebody else's rig. |

| On local trips I expect to split gas with people who are in the boat on a regular basis. If I only take you out once or twice a year I won't ask but it's nice when I get some cash. On longer trips where my truck and boat are being used, I expect that I will pay a reduced share of the gas to help offset the wear and tear on my stuff. That is, of course, unless it reciprocates and we are going to use your stuff on the next trip. It all depends really. |

| I've got some friends and family that only get out once or twice a year, and they go with me. The joy of getting someone out fishing that otherwise would not be fishing is gratifying enough. My rig- my treat. Like Lucky said, I'd be going regardless. |

Long haul week trips, usually we decide on the boat and we use the other guys truck. Split things down the middle.
I think of owning a boat as a privilege and not as an extra expense. Gives me the freedom to go whenever I want and I would have it and would be going fishing regardless if my buddy tagged along. I prefer the company most times and have no issues with the added expense of boat maintenance and upkeep. |
