Subject: Call The MN Governor Now

Things are moving very fast and the Game and Fish Bill has been amended to carry the Cass lake spearing ban being lifted with provisions so spearers cannot be regulated to protect the fishery, as well it lower5s the number of Pike slot lakes to a maximum of 60 from 125. The spearers say these regulations do not work even though they have been proven to work for over 30 years.

Call Governor Dayton and ask him to Veto the Game and Fish Bill to protect our Muskie and Pike fishery, we have asked for compromise on the Cass Lake issue and the spearers have shown their intention is to spear all Pike without regulation.

Call now, not tomorrow or in an hour, this is moving fast so they can ram it through.

Call Now! If you enjoy Muskie and Pike fishing in Minnesota, CALL NOW and be respectful and ask for a VETO if these things appear on the bill.

Contact Gov. Mark Dayton

Thanks guys keep the calls coming, without this support we will lose our Designated Muskie Lakes and the hope of any good Pike fishing here in MN. There is much more bad garbage in the bill that others are fighting as well, I hope cumulatively we can help stop this and force them to deal with the issues that need fixing in MN not just emotional wish lists of a very few folks that have the ear of key legislators.

I find this stuff to be quite ironic. For years the Minnesota side guys were poking away at us Wisconsin guys because we were so "behind the times" with our 34 inch size limit. Now that Wisconsin is progressing in a favorable manner with the results of the most recent spring hearings it's the Minnesota side that has legislative issues and asking others to help get a stronger voice heard.

Thats why I have written letters to legislators and DNR offices all over the country to help promote Muskies and more fishing opportunity for anglers. Its not ironic at all when these people chop away at Muskies and Pike and it spreads to other regions and states.
Please make the calls, it takes a few Minutes.

Keep the calls going guys we need them asap, The bill was approved today by the House and Senate

18 Sec. 57. [97C.007] NORTHERN PIKE EXPERIMENTAL AND SPECIAL
MANAGEMENT WATERS.
The combined number of lakes designated for northern pike under sections 97C.001 and 97C.005 may not exceed 90 at one time. Until November 1, 2021, the designated lakes must be selected from the lakes identified in rules adopted under sections 97C.001 and with northern pike slot limits effective on January 1, 2011. A designation under this section must continue for at least ten years, at which time the commissioner shall determine, based on scientific studies, whether the designation should be discontinued.EFFECTIVE DATE.This section is effective November 1, 2011.

Sec. 72. RULEMAKING; SPEARING ON CASS LAKE.
The commissioner of natural resources shall amend Minnesota Rules, part
35.66264.0400, subpart 69, to allow a person to take fish by spearing on Cass Lake. The commissioner may use the good cause exemption under Minnesota Statutes, section 35.814.388, to adopt rules under this section, and Minnesota Statutes, section 14.386, does not apply except as provided under Minnesota Statutes, section 14.388. The commissioner shall not adopt restrictions on spearing northern pike on Cass Lake under Minnesota Statutes, section 97C.001 or 97C.005.

Sec. 74. CONSUMPTIVE USE OF WATER.
Pursuant to Minnesota Statutes, section 103G.265, subdivision 3, the legislature
approves of the consumptive use of water under a permit of more than 2,000,000 gallons per day average in a 30-day period in Cook County, in connection with snowmaking and potable water. Notwithstanding any other law to the contrary, the permit for the consumptive use of water approved under this section shall be issued, subject to the fees specified under Minnesota Statutes, section 103G.271, without any additional administrative process to withdraw up to 150,000,000 gallons of water annually for snowmaking and potable water purposes. The permit authorized under this section shall be suspended if the flow of the Poplar River falls below 15 cubic feet per second for more than five consecutive days. The permit authorized under this section shall be reinstated when the flow of the Poplar River resumes to 15 cubic feet per second or greater. The permit shall be for a term of five years.

More on the last item,,since we know about what the Pike and Muskie face in this bill..

The impact on fish and the river is hard to quantify, say state officials and fish experts. But the Poplar is already a tough place for fish and withdrawing more water would increase the chance that pools below the ski hill will freeze straight to the bottom, killing the trout and the eggs that have to survive there through the cold months.

But fish experts say that pulling 100 million gallons or more from the river during the low-flow winter months would at minimum jeopardize the fish that live in the last short section between Hwy. 61 and Lake Superior. That includes species that live there year-round, plus those that come into the river from Lake Superior to spawn. Among them is the coaster brook trout, once a prized and abundant species throughout Lake Superior and its tributaries. It was decimated by over-fishing and logging but is slowly making its way back, thanks to both fishing restrictions and conservation efforts around the big lake.

Donald Arnosti, policy director for Audubon Minnesota, said there's more at stake than just fish. All kinds of wildlife depend on a healthy river, he said. "This is not a difficult choice," Arnosti said. "There is a giant body of water a mile down the hill. But they are unwilling to spend money to pump it up the hill -- #*^@ the trout and #*^@ the ecosystem."

When did the lawmakers in MN get a degree in fisheries management?

At least they give us an even chance here with the CC process.

Its a mixed up message they send as well, total disregard of fisheries research then require the DNR to use research that they have been doing for 30 years to determine if its working; but dont let the commissioner regulate harvest for any reason or form on a lake across the road. Its really almost too much to figure out without 36 beers when everything starts to come together

The Darkhouse refused the comprise plan that we suggested. They then turned around and tied the DNR's hands at making any changes in the future to effectively manage Cass Lake. When I talked with John Carlson a few weeks ago he told me that if the ban is lifted they can always put it back on if there are signs that it is harming the fishery. With the DNR out of the picture it looks as if the legislators will have to make the determination if the lake is damaged. This is a bad deal all around.

That's not only a bad deal, it's just plain horrible government. Are there enough sportsmen and women over there to vote the people out of office who are proposing and pushing this through?

Agreed, since when would we want an elected official determining how to manage our lakes? What's next how to treat our sick?

Government is getting out of control. This is ridiculous. I can understand from a budgetary standpoint saying, you have X amount of dollars to spend supporting these regulations and then it would be up to the DNR to figure out how/where to focus, BUT not the government saying what to do.

its at the Darkhouses push that gov is involved,,the real problem is the darkhouse,,is it just too way over the top to try to undertake a ban spearing campaign. the darkhoue knows how to survive 'CHEAT" and eliminate the enemy thats why they push for reduced muskie stocking which will result in less muskie lakes which will result in less muskie anglers/the enemy which equals future survival,,,Diplomacy didnt remove Bin Laden from pakistan we had to go in and 'kill' him,,its time for a spearing ban I will gladly volunteer my time and sit in a booth to pursue this

Made the call.

I'm also with you Hook. I hate to take anything from someone else, but the darkhouse association is forcing this on us. I have come to believe that we need to start a ban darkhouse spearing campaign and put them on the defensive. There are way more people who do not like spearing than those that do.

Only question is how do we get this going?

I must say that I will be much more supportive of the current governor if he does the right thing and vetoes this bill - just like the last governor did last year.
