I've just aquirded a new Trinidad 16 DC reel and I'm looking to outfit it with a nice musky rod. I'm looking at the Okuma 9.3ft telescopic @ $140, a custom Diamondback 8.5-9.0ft for $215, or the St croix Legend 8.5-9.0ft Big Nasty @ $320-340. Any other suggestions or feedback on these models?http://muskie.outdoorsfirst.com/board/images/emoticons/surprise.gif

Posts: 134 | Also, consider Elk River Custom Rods and the Custom X custom rods. Met both owners at the Madison Fishing Expo and both seem like great guys who will back up the quality of their product. For a more affordable option, look at Toothtamer rods. Great people there too and great warranty.

Posts: 299 | You cannot go wrong with the "Big Nasty". I just picked mine up last night and what an awesome rod! Every bit worth of $340. I'll put my TE on it and ready to go. I have just fallen in love with the entire Legend series. I've got the "Sling Blade", "The Jerk", "Big Dawg" and now "Big Nasty". I'm gonna pick up the "Classic Jerk" before opening season and should be fully outfitted. Go for the Legend series....

Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | Both Musky Tackle Online and myself have the Tackle Industries rods on special right now for $110 delivered. All my rods come with Fuji components too. Most other lower price rods do not. My blanks are also custom built to my specifications, not off the rack blanks. Here are some recent threads about them: http://muskie.outdoorsfirst.com/board/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=63... http://muskie.outdoorsfirst.com/board/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=63... http://muskie.outdoorsfirst.com/board/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=62... The rods that are on special: http://www.tackleindustries.com/muskypikerods.html Thanks, James Owner, Tackle Industries PS-Anyone seen my new commercials running on Keys Outdoors, Musky Hunter and The Next Bite? Message me if you have. Just seeing how many viewers are seeing them during those shows. Thanks

Posts: 908 Location: South-Central PA | It depends on what your budget is. You have quite a price spread among the options you listed. If you're not looking to spend much, I'd go with a TI rod from James- you can't beat the quality for the price (this is coming from a custom builder's perspective). If you have a big budget, go custom. If you have a rod built to your exact specifications and needs, you'll never put it down. jeremy

Posts: 127 | If you're going with a Trinidad 16DC, I would consider pairing a reel of that caliber with a cusotm rod. I just got a new custom 9'6XH Predator built by Otterods to pair up with my 16NA. I like the looks of the TI 9ft 's. I live in the Chicago suburbs. Are there any dealers that carry them in my neck of the woods? Also it looks like a 2yr warrenty whereas the St Croix and Okuma's have lifetime warrenties. I worry about a long rod and the posssibilty of snapping a tip off, etc....

Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | Sorry, no dealers in the Chicago area yet for Tackle Industries rods hence my blanketing of the Midwest with 2000+ commercials right now That is part of the reason we are doing the $110 delivered deal through winter (Musky Tackle Online has them too for $110). As for warranty, I do have a 2 yr warranty on the rods but LOL I have sold almost 3000 rods and maybe gotten 20 warranty cards in so far. I would never leave a customer with a broken rod of mine if it was a malfunction of the workmanship/quality. That goes for 2 yr old rods or even 10 yr old rods. Worst thing a company can have is disgruntled customers.... The few issues I have with any of my rods or lures I take care of immediately. email me at [email protected] if you have anymore questions. Thanks, James

Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | PIKEMASTER-They are sketchy right now. Most commercials are running in MN, WI, IL, IN, IA and I have gotten notice that they are even as far out as PA but I did not pay for those Bonus for me! Got them on during Keys Outdoors, Musky Hunter and The Next Bite. Just testing the waters right now and if it pays off I will go much deeper into TV next year.

Posts: 143 Location: Lake of The Woods | I replied to your post on the other board. I dont think many realize what a Trinidad 16 dc is worth, have a look. I have my 16 dc on a sligblade but will move it to a big nasty this season. This reel sounds nothing like a Calcutta or a calais dc. People comment on the sound as something like a arcade game. I have never seen a predator rod before but have heard nothing but A plus comments, that may be an option!

Posts: 692 Location: Pelican Rapids, MN | If you've gone all out and bought a high end B.A. reel, you need to pair it up with a B.A. high end rod. Get the Big Nasty. Take my word for it, you buy a cheaper one, you'll always be at the store and looking at catalogues and you'll be wishing you bought that 9' Legend Tournament. You get what you pay for! Putting a 16 DC on a mid level rod, is like putting a Corvette engine in the body of a Geo.

Posts: 1141 Location: NorthCentral WI | Tackle Industries - 3/8/2011 1:20 PM Oh ya!!! Geo with an LS1 Corvette engine LOL. Nice. Not everyone wants to dump $300 or more on a rod. Even if it is a $500 reel, he said he "aquired" it, so who knows if he even paid a dime... One question. What is the average amount a guide writes off every year as 'expenses'? Rods = $2800 Reels = $3000 Lures = $2500 etc.. makes it a lot easier to drop $1000 on one set up doesn't it? I'm not saying that's wrong in any way but more affordable when you can look at it as a business expense. TI rods = Good enough for the girls I go out with.

Posts: 41 | TI rods - Don't presently own any. But would highly consider given all the positive posts. Wouldn't hesitate even with only a 2 year warranty. Another obvious would be the posts that he puts up. You can see through his posts that he is top notch. If going out on a limb, go with a TI. Like quality stuff myself, but you can say you have quality and have no service to back it up. He has the service (when needed and don't look like very often.) My 2 cents.

When I read some of these posts individuals are posting things like get a better rod than a mid-range rod. Why? What makes the 350.00 rod so much better than the TI 100.00 rod? Another has posted the TI rods break. Where? How many have you seen break? What was done to rectify the situation? Others are posting the TI rods are so much better. Why? Here is a few examples of a possible feature/benefits: I like the TI rods because of the more reasonable price allows me to spend more money on gas and other items for fishing. I like a the TI rods because I can own three rods for the price of one higher priced rod. I like the tackle industry rods because I had a rod guide break and James sent me a new rod guide within a few days and that is the kind of service I like. I like the weight and feel of the TI rods and as such it is less fatiguing to the wrists. etc... etc... In order for an individual to make an educated decision on a purchase of a rod the benifits need to be understood and clearly laid out.
