Posts: 60 Location: Poca, West Virginia | I would like to build some inline spinners like the Musky Mahem models. Are there any books, DVDs or websites on this subject. I can't afford 25.00 to 27.00 per lure.

One thing that is great about this site is that there are always people willing to go out of there way to help others out. So good luck. Make sure to post up some pics of your fist batches of lures!!!!! Mike

Posts: 676 Location: Twin Cities, MN | Here is some more details I put together. Hopefully this helps. If you want a link for how to make the wraps yourself for the wire shafts, let me know, I found a really nice jewelry link that essentially uses the same technique. There are lots of suppliers to choose from for components. Components Blades - Magnum 8-12’s, or standard fluted 7 – 9, Colorado, Indiana (gauge varies) Beads - preference is yours, I tend to use the hollow large diameter 5/16 or 1/4 Clevises - # 6 Wire shafts - .51 or preference Hooks - 5 – 8 your preference Split Rings - # 7 ( lots of choices here for type) Shrink Tube – 3/8 or ¼ for smaller hooks Sinkers - ¼ through 5/8 – your weight preference Lure Bodies - again your preference, I usually use # 69 Spacers - page 19 of Moore’s catalog Flashabou skirts on coil – purchase premade or make your own If you make your own, you will need Flashabou (magnum used most and saltwater), bobbin, thread (I have been using upholstery thread which is nice and thick), coils (I cut up a brake throttle cable from a lawnmower), glue and a fly tying vise. Knipex round nose pliers – might need to special order these Needle nose pliers – I got the nice ones with blue handles from Northern Wire Cutters - I got the nice ones with blue handles from Northern Split Ring Pliers – again lots of choices For Silicon tails you will also need Skirt collars or Lure/Skirt Bodies Premade silicone skirts unless you want to make your own – these vary quite a bit by strand count also so be careful

Posts: 222 Location: c.wis | make enough for your self, and sell the rest on craigslist to pay for the ones you keep. you can build them for 8.00 or so each. lurepartsonline is a good place to start if your not making 20+ bait. dont get deep cut blades, they turn for crap, its fun-welcome to your newest expensive hobby

Posts: 676 Location: Twin Cities, MN | Yes, Blades alone for a double ten will be about 3.00 - 5.00 per pair Flashabou will run about $ 6.00 to make one double tail depending on how thick you want it.

Posts: 55 Location: Coon Rapids, MN | For making the skirts you can also by the cheap tinsel around the holiday season. There normally isn't as may colors to choose from but it can help cut down on the cost. Mix the cheap stuff in with the expensive stuff to get the look you want.

I'll just add that it is not the same as proper Flashabou. It's far more brittle and will break easily. It will tie up fine and look good, but it will sooner or later break and come apart depending on your use. Years ago before I started tying for customers I went nuts one Christmas and bought a boatload of that stuff for use on flies. Now I have bags and bags and bags of it. If anyone wants it, let me know.

Like Esoxfly stated, that stuff is NOT anything like real flashabou. That stuff will break very easy & the color will come off of it. I tried some of it from the craft store & it doesn't hold up. Buy the saltwater flashabou.

Posts: 60 Location: Poca, West Virginia | Just thought I would like to try making a few for me and a few friends. I've built several rods over the years so I just wanted to try this too. The wire baits I think I can do because I'm not a artist so I'm not capable of painting the other styles of baits. I live in West Virginia where the Crane and Amma Bammas are made and I don't have that kind of talent. Thought it might save a few bucks in this money pit called musky fishing. Posts: 145 | I just started making by own tails last year and it really became a great winter hobby. I have to warn you, though, you may not save that much money when all is said and done. If you're anything like me, you'll keep making baits and want to have all components on hand in case a bait needs repair or you think of a new color. As previously stated, you're looking at $4-$8 for blades and $6-10 worth of flashabou on any given bait. You're already into the $10-$18 dollar range without any of the other components. Word of caution: It is very addicting to catch fish on your baits!

Posts: 676 Location: Wisconsin | Sorry forgot that....yes, if you don't have a 637. Actually the $1 per line, if you buy a 10's, it is pretty reasonable compared to what some people are charging for blades. Moore's Lures is another one that is very good customer service and good pricing. Sometimes I will buy from Dick if I need something faster or if Lakeland is out of stock or if I have a custom request for a couple of lures.
