Last year I had a rod standing straight up in the holder when my friend was casting a mag dawg, he managed to hook the rod on his backswing and throw it out with the lure. The rod that was flung into the water was a gander mt special with a C4 on it. Sunk down in 7' of water, so you'd think it wouldn't be too hard to find, think again. Maybe it was a d1ck move but I made my buddy replace it, actually he gave me $150 for it.

Earlier in the year I was throwing a mag dawg and had a light grip on the rod when it backlashed... the momentum of the dawg ripped the rod from my hands and fell into the lake, landing about 4' from me (just far enough I couldn't reach it) and I was ready to dive in, but then it never sunk. Apparently St.Croix rods are much more buoyant than gander rods.

I have made countless deposits into the various lakes I fish. The two that hurt the most were my Ocean Waves on LOTW. I always hope to boat a fish on that spot that has them on, and a Big Kahuna somewhere on the Three Lakes Chain.

Prometheus. This happened last Sunday evening. I was practicing casting--I do this for exercise--from a boardwalk along the Allegheny River in the City of Pittsburgh. I was throwing a 6" Rattle Hawg with my jerk bait rod--just to see the action in the filthy water. I had 20 lb. mono on the reel. Effort at casting. The line snaps violently. The lure goes sailing off. But far worse, the rod flies out of my hands and falls into the water, right off the boardwalk. It is sinking. I jump down on my chest and thrust my right arm into the water, just reaching the last eight inches of the rod before it sinks down. I grasp and hold. The rod and reel are saved. The god will get me for this.

I'm going to fill the handle of my Frabil with expanding foam tonight so it won's sink.

St. Croix Top-and-Tail w/a Calcutta 400B. Found out the hard way that split-grips don't float.

Oh and lost my stainless prop! Boat guy had recently done some work on my lower unit, his father forgot to put the cotter pin in. Ran about 7 miles fished and was gunna head back when I made the discovery! I was not very pleased!

Lots of stuff over the years. There's a stowmaster net on the bottom of Kinkaid. Apparently filling the handle wasn't enough to make it float.

Out fishing 20 yeas ago or so with friends and we had our wives with well after the ladies had 1 too many cocktails my buddy hits the gas and out goes my wife, (at the time). If I would have known that during that X-Mas season we would get a divorce I would have never had my buddy go back and get her.

We were on the river and the curent was pretty strong in that area so she started freaking out!!! You know hind sight is 20/20!!!

Sunk a rod last fall while pulling a fish out of the net - at least that's the best thing we can see happened. The butt of the net handle was up next to one of my rods sitting on the edge of my buddies boat that has a really shallow edge/lip on it and in the process of getting the fish out of the net we moved the net handle that was pushing on my rod and over the side of the boat goes the rod. Didn't even know it was gone until we got to the launch. That reel had some meaning to me...that hurt.

Walleye fishing with my father in law a month prior to that I was casting and on the backswing I snagged my other rod that was leaned up next to the windshield and flung it striaght down into 30 FOW and by the time I realized what happened the rod was gone. Stupid.

Did a complete boat makover last summer and didn't think to check the condition of the anchor rope...dropped the anchor one night to fiddle with a reel and went to pull it back up and the rope was rotten....yep, no anchor.

This isn't a loss to the water gods, but it is something stupid I did...just last Friday I was fishing with a buddy out of his boat. It was pretty windy and I was in the back, I stepped down off his back deck to get something and laid my rod down and rolled it back into one of his cleates on the edge of his boat (seemed like a good spot to put it to keep it from rolling around). See this one coming yet? Yep, stepped back up on the deck, picked up the rod that was under the boat cleat and snapped that puppy right in half. AAAAGH!

That's the extent of my losses so far....

2 years ago, my Beckman XD PEN on a Canadian walleye lake while night fishing/trolling. Laying on back casting deck after catching a fish, bag must have been partially in the water and got pulled in - didn't notice it until we had all the rods & planner boards reset.

A whole plano plastic storage box full of Rapala/stick type suspending/floating baits. Blew out of boat while on plane at night.
Another plano plastic storage box full of Alien's. (lid was open) Blew out of boat while on plane. I got the box back, but all the Alien's went gliding to the bottom in ~20'-25' of water.

Hats/sunglass's, pliers, hook remover's.

100's of lures lost due to various nefarious underwater obstructions (rocks/logs/cribs/etc.) in last 50years.

Have fun!

Lost my wallet at the beginning of the summer. Saw the DNR checking licenses. Reached for mine in my back pocket to have it ready when he was done with the guy across the cove. It wasn't there. I, of course, knew about the hole in my pocket. Just didn't think about it being big enough for my wallet to slip through. Only deduction is that it slipped out when I stepped into the boat from the landing. Oops!
The agent was awesome about the situation. Even swam around the dock with me for a while looking for it. Way cool of him!

Worse yet was losing my keys a month or so ago. Finished a long day on the water. Was heading to the car walking across a dock when some little rascal jumped out of another boat. I lost my balance and opened my hand to catch myself. Keys went into the drink. Searched for them for an hour or so (even using the extra large magnet I keep in the boat). The guy in the other boat never offered a hand at all (he could have least explained to his kid that jumping on a floating dock is not something to do.). In the pitch dark I took the four mile boat ride through a no-wake out to the main lake and travelled the necessary distance to get cell phone coverage. Needless to say, the wife was less happy about the situation than I was. Thank God, she still drove the hour over to the lake. Funny story? My stupidy gets worse. Couldn't find the spare keys and I drive a Ford (your wise cracks at this point are unnecessary). Significance of driving a Ford? Only way to have a key made is to have the vehicle at a dealership. Beautiful! Freaking beautiful!!! Now I have four ignition keys.

I almost donated a boat to the Muskie gods but luckily I got it back before they could get their fins on it. However, they did get most of my fishing gear, two other buddies fishing gear, boat batteries, and more. I started fishing muskies out of a little 12ft Jon Boat somewhere around the age of 12. One day I had too much gear and people in the boat and took a wave over the front, put the boat in the drink. We were saved by some folks who saw us on shore but most of our gear is still in the bottom of a river up north.

In addition to baits, rods, reels, and terminal tackle:

Waterproof socks (they don't stay on the back deck while on plane)

Numerous hats (amazing how fast they sink)

a small (but full) tackle box (another back deck issue - I finally have learned not to leave stuff there)

The worst was a pair of prescription glasses which fell into 80' of water on Eagle Lake one year.  Made the drive home exciting, to say the least.

I donated a JVC HD camcorder to the waters of GreenBay in The best of the best tournament. Tough one to explain to the wife.

Dropped a set-up of 2 downeast rod holders into Pewaukee out of the back of the boat. Didn't know until I got back to the launch and one was missing. Did lose a bunch of gear in Beaver Dam lake when we swamped the boat pulling into the launch.

If its the gods that makes that pontoon full of people drop there anchor right in the middle of the hump your fishing then I,ve lost my temper to the gods . If its the gods that make that boat troll in front of you while your casting your favorite stretch of shoreline , than again I,ve lost my temper to the gods. When I had a 54 incher get off next to the boat, swatted the water with my rod ,only to hit the side of my boat snapping my rod in two , then for some reason black out and throw the whole works in the lake . I guess once again I lost my temper to the gods . I have tried to make them happy with many blood sacrifices of my own I have made to the gods . ( Maybe if I sacrificed the bird I tend to let fly the gods would leave me alone.... )

Last fall fishing with my 82 yr old Dad on Boom Lake. Just had caught a 43"
on new bull dawg I had just purchased. My Dad was fishing in back of boat
watching his bobber which had a sucker on it. I was casting off the front
throwing the bulldawg. Dad's line got caught around the motor. So I put
my pole down with dawg hanging down in the water a few feet. Went back
in boat and got Dad's line out from around motor. Went back in front of boat
and you guessed it POLE WAS GONE. Was in about 10' of water so only thing
I can think of is fish seen Dawg bouncing up and down and grab it. Tried for
and hour scraping bottom with lure retriever with no luck. Loved that rod and reel.

Two of the most memorable.... $150 glasses that were on my hat when the fish flies came out to play on Mille Lacs. Took my hat off to take a swing at the little bastards and my glasses that were on top of my hat hit the drink. And then there is my H20. Fishing suckers in late November here in MN. I pulled my hand out of my sweatshirt pocket and along with it came my H20. Lets just say that I could see it suspended 10 foot down over 20' of water. Losing the priceless info was much worse than the cost of the GPS.

Just this season, I set the hook on a fish and as my fishing partner went to lift the net my 8'6" Sling Blade rod, Abu 6501 TC, 80# powerpro, DCG went overboard. He felt horrible and almost jumped in after the set up. You know you got issues when I still was more concerned with him sticking to netting the fish rather than swim for my rod/reel. Turned out to be a small Muskie which made it even more funny. I just remember shouting "forget the rod, just net the fish". Yeah, I got Muskie issues! #*^@ small fish cost about $500 that day! The good friend that his is... He went ahead and replaced my lost gear with an awesome set up that has consistently been my good luck charm on the water now.

I have lost a bunch of baits but nothing as terrible and snapping a rod on a fish and watching the broken part hit a 45-50 inch fish right between the eyes and then lose it when the line snapped. The rod I would have been ok with but both the rod and fish ticked me off. I am more blessed than my friend who lost 3 rods in one day. Lost first one right out of his hands , second one trolling , didn't lock it in and last one fell off the deck when motoring. 2 legends and a premier. Now that was bad.

With the Phantom I could mot tell you other than I was fishing off of Little Pipe Island and while reeling it in it got snagged on some rocks. I could not reposition the boat to pull it out at all. Getting in close enough to try and pull it off the rocks was not a option as it was less than 2 feet deep and mt 20' Crestliner was not going to make it that Shallow.

Well the Plopper was my stupid error. I was chatting with the wife when I was casting it out for the 5th or 6th time and it went rocketing off the rod tip and before I knew it it hit the rocks on the shore. Went right in between a huge rock and 2 some what smaller ones sitting on top ot it. Right into the littlies hole possible. There is no way a person could aim it that well and hit that hole. Again I tried to get to it but Gull Island was not a place that I could get the beast of a boat I own close enough.

I talk to a guy that work at the marina where we stayed and told him exactly where it was. I figured when the ice freezaes he will be out there to get that one for sure as it is sitting along the shore edge of crapper island!!!!

Was really bummed out when I lost the Plopper. That lure makes some awesome noise when retrieving it. I was really impressed with the noise level. I am sure if I would not have lost it I would have caught the new MN state record for sure with it!!!!!! LMAO!!!

I have found over the years of bass fishing that it is never too hard to lose lures. It just that when bass fishing for the most part when I lose a lure it ususally is less than a $10 loss. Now with musky fishing you can pretty musch consider every loss at least a $30 bill when you include the leader as well!!!

Next time I leave the wife at home......lol
