The crooks , meth heads or kids are making that outing to your favorite lake expensive . I was told they are punching holes in gas tanks on tow vechicles and draining , and taking the gas , If they see anything in the vechicle they just break the side window out , had this happen to me last year , they made off with a crappy stereo . The latest is , this happend last week I guess , they are cutting the catalytic converters off and taking them , nice. This I understand is taking place in Chisago and Pine counties at the boat ramps .

I have heard of a few incidents at the Casino area ramp on Millacs as well. best to keep your stuff out of sight at a minimum.

There is quite a rash of this sort of thing as of late in the Duluth area as well. They are smashing windows under mid day sun. Take caution(along with a tire iron) when using these problem landings.

I saw 3 or 4 areas of broken glass at the Clyde Ave launch in Duluth yesterday. A friend of mine had his car broken into there last month. I'll definately avoid that one from now on.

They're not the only ones you have to worry about. Fished with Gregg Thomas over the weekend and he had someone put water in the gas tank of his truck while parked at a landing.

Best defense is thinking ahead use launches that are not in question , be aware of where you are at. But like baldy said " scumbags are everywhere"

actually the best defense is to pay the $7-$10 and use a private landing if available,,,Dont know if thats an option on St Louis but it is on Mile Lacs,,,,,and NEVER use a public launch on Cass!!!!! where they'll damage YOU not just your property

I know numerous cases on Vermilion where they'll hit boats parked at docks and clean them out, at night. Had a friend loose a new GPS unit and heard of other cases with the same fate. We used to keep our boats at a marina on the lake; one day we showed up and every boat in the marina had their batteries yanked, starter battery, trolling motor battery, new/old, didn't matter; all gone. P*sses me off.

I wish I was a bigger guy; I would love to sit at some of these landings with a bunch of buddies and catch people that do this kind of stuff.

I like using the Big Lake access right west of Cass Lake, thats a fun one. There have actually been murders on the road to the access.

It's a shame that when their football team sucks people resort to thievery and violence.

Nice to know about the Big Lake access. Have used that a couple times and always wondered what the truck would be like when I returned, Do the resorts on Big Lake allow you to launch? Which resort would you launch at on Cass?

Those all the reasons why I go to Canada...I've fished alot of those waters and have heard countless horror stories. Between the drug issues ,unemployment and "native" problems ...it's sad that we have to worry about what's going on at the launch when we're trying to enjoy ourselves !

Maybe we should bus a bunch of meth heads and so on and send them to Utah and make stops at every boat lauch. That would be really impressive. LOL

I had my trailer stolen a few years back. On the St Croix north of Stillwater. I came back to the launch and went to my truck just to find a clipped padlock!!!

The Police said that it was common!!

Sure did suck!

I also had all of my trailer lights ripped off of my trailer last year. That was on LOTW.

Again, That sucked! I was pulled over twice on the way home .

I had an old half case of beer stolen out of the box of my truck a couple years ago. I just did a quick walk through the parking lot and found the car it was in and stole it back seeing as how they left the doors unlocked. I then saved myself the dump run in the morning by putting the random garbage in my truck in their car. Hopefully they learned their lesson, can't stand thieves or vandals.

I have nightmares of people stealing my trailer. What did you end up doing?

I was at this Chisago County landing when the first owner found out about the stolen catalytic converter. There were two cut off and they had been underneath 3 other vehicles before they may have been interrupted. The owners had only been fishing from 2-5 pm that day.

I had my gas tank drilled out back in June on these same lakes. After talking with the Chisago County Sheriffs office, i urge you to call the sheriff if you see any suspicious vehicles at these landings (i.e. cars or trucks parked with no trailer further away from the access than necessary). Seems as though they are using a look-out man while the others work. Nothing like pulling in a 50" ski for your first fish of the year a week into the season just to get back to your truck and see you have no fuel and a $600 repair bill on the way!

Not sure if they have concealled carry in MN, but may want to think of that. We have open carry in WI, however on the SE WI lakes, there really haven't been any issues to warrent carrying the .40 on the hip when fishing. Although, there's been a couple of fish that I would have loved to plug this year before they got off. lol

Jonnysled,

Iv never had a problem around Minocqua or Eagle River areas except for people continually stealing my emergency back-up switch on my Ranger trailer.

maybe a person should start putting one of those game cams on a post or tree focused on your rig when you launch has a little bit of response,,possibly catching a plate number or discription of person if something does happen

yah, i've lived here since around '98 and always was glad i did because of what i'd heard of going on in minnesota et al, but for sure this summer right in the middle of the day a guy opens my tailgate, looks inside underneath the cover and grabs the only thing in the bed ... my transom-saver. i'm pretty sure my spare was stolen while at a ramp somewhere in wisconsin (twice!). if you're an avid fisherman go take a peak under your truck ... LOL. i wonder how long it was gone before i noticed?

i still think we're pretty safe here relative to other areas, but not immune to theft at landings. my radar is on and i pay more attention than ever to what stays at the landing after i launch.
