Location: Richfield, MN | What is a good quality but yet not a bank breaker for a good sniper for cutting hooks out of muskies or if it should ever happen my body parts!!!
One that was recommended to me when I first started looking into muskie fishing was somewhere in the $80-90 range. Cannot remember what those were but that to me seemed a weeeeeee bit to much.
What are you all using out there in your boats.

| Right now I am using Midget Bolt cutters I bought off Rollie and Hellens for $14.99, and so far they have worked great. And, they have a lifetime warranty. Other than that, look into Knipex, which are in the $50-60 range. |

| Knipex. I bought mine on amazon a couple of years ago and they were about $40.

Location: Oshkosh | I would love to have Knipex, but at the time, I didnt have the money to buy them, so I found a pair of Koblats from Lowes for 9.98. They have a life time over the counter warranty and are spring loaded. I have cut 7/0 hooks with no problem. If you have the money I am all for getting Knipex, but if you dont I would highly recommend the ones from Lowes.

Right now with just getting onto musky fishing I am REAL low on cash. So if it means I cut back for now on these rather than not have anything in the boat then I would go with cheaper is better than nothing.
Any others out there that use something else. It was Knipex that they said are what one needs to have. But I think they were like $80 or 90 there!!! |

| Believe it or not Lowes has Knipex plain jane bolt cutters for 45 dollars. They are in the electrical toll section not the regular tool section. Also if you can wait to have them shipped Chads Tool Box has the best prices I have found. Just type that in your search bar. I will also say the Kobalt Lowes brand bolt cutters will cut a hook but if you have to cut a main shank they will dent and flatten in that spot. But you just go back in the store and exchange over the counter. I have got the Knipex, the Lowes Kobalt, and a 18 inch pair of rigids in the boat for main shank cutting. That will extend the life of the smaller ones dramaatically. |

Location: oswego, il | Do your best to find a great deal on some knipex cutters. On the surface, it seems like a great place to skimp but it is not. You will realize this on your first badly hooked fish or worse, you need to cut yourself from a bad situation. Couple this with a bad angle where you can't get a good grip and you will be very sorry.
Funny story, a buddy of mine was touting his, got these cheap that work great cutters and he handed them to me when I needed a hook cutter. They would not cut the hook and I asked for my knipex which cut the hook like butter. Those cheap cutters found their way to the bottom of the lake. |

| I finally broke down and bought a knipex this spring and I have to say. GET KNIPEX. After using a variety of cheaper cutters in the past years, I can honestly say I was so impressed with the knipex and NOTHING truly compares! If you don't have the cash, Knipex are a great gift idea for the future. |

Location: Hayward, WI | If you look around you should be able to easily get a set of Knipex mini bolt cutters for under $50. You will not regret that purchase. Other cheaper cutters might cut hooks, but I don't think they will do it as easly, or for as long before wearing out.
Also, the cheaper cutters may cut a hook when you can get a good grip on it, but what about when you have to reach waaayyy in there to cut off an 8/0? Things get a little harder when the hook is right at the tip of the cutter's jaws, and you only can get a few fingers on the handles of the cutter. Will a $10 snip them off then?
There have been several occations where I have remarked that the fish I just released would have died had I not had a Knipex with me. Two release items to not try to save money on are a good net and Knipex cutters in my book.
I was where you are not too long ago. I felt like Knipex cutters were something I could not afford when starting out, but I managed to scrape up the cash to get them. Think about it - they only cost as much as a few fishing trips do in gas money...

$44.50 and free shipping. There is a set ending very soon for like $25 and $8 to ship. You should be able to get some for half the 80-90 bucks you were told before. I wouldn't be to worried about a used set either as long as they have a decent picture of the jaws.

Location: Appleton | I have two good reason's to go with a Knipex, first one, my buddy had a really nice fish gator roll on him in the net and proceeded to get the front hook of a topraider embedded in his hand, while still attached to the fish I very quickly grabbed the knipex and free'd him before she rolled even more and tore the skin off the top of his hand. The second story I had a brand new hard head laying on the counter pushed way back in the corner so it was out of harms way, we'll one of our labs at the time figured it was a good snack and ate the bait and managed to stick the treble threw her bottom lip and the other into her paw. Well thank go my knipex was handy in my boat in my garage so I was able to pull the treb out of her paw but the other treb was all the way through her bottom lip so I cut below the barb and pulled the hook right out. Thank god it wasn't worse! I learned a valuable lesson that nite, dont ever leave baits lay out no matter how much you think they'll be out of the way! Somehow they will find them! Knipex all the way!! |

I tried to convince myself that it's cheaper to use a cheap one in case they go overboard. There's are not bargins in my mind Knipex is the tool for this job. Check out website Chads tool box for what I found was the cheapest. |

| Bought my Knipex off e-bay used for about $20. They are made tough and dont really wear out, so if you can find a set that look good in the pic they probably have years of life left in them. Worked for me. |

| Agree with the Knipex and I took an old DC phone power cord and cutoff the ends and used electrical tape to attach one end to the Knipex and made a loop on the other end. I always put my hand through the loop before I start cutting and haven't lost a pair yet. |

You can get them with thicker padding on the handles and with spring loaded handles too, but you don't need that. I have the basic model and they work great.

New Boat = $20,000
Trip To Canada = $2,000
Ruining a fishing trip when you get hooked because you are too cheap to buy good cutters = priceless.
It's ok to shop around, but get good cutters. Test them on some hooks. Yes, ruin a perfectly good hook to test the cutters.

You will realize they are worth every penny you pay for them the first time you use them and any second thoughts you had about buying them will be gone forever. |

I agree with everyone that Knipex are the best, but not everyone can afford them and I would rather have people buy a pair like the ones that I have from Lowes for 10 bucks then go out in a boat without any cutters. |

| Alright then. Don't think about it in terms of a $20k boat....think about it in terms of $12.99-$35+ baits. Instead of buying one or two baits next time you're out shopping, buy a decent bolt cutter.
If you're like me or most guys out there, we buy a half a box full of new baits each year. Take 1-3 of those baits out of the lineup and you've got your Knipex. Or, pick a handful of baits you never use, throw them on ebay, spend the money on an online auction for a Knipex.....on ebay.
