have you ever gone to a curling bonspiel? the muskie's range and the location of curling clubs pretty much overlap. snow is white, too. the good thing is that the muskie's range is expanding...

Posts: 485 Location: On my favorite lake! | I would agree with you. Most people who fish are 20 to 65. Most musky lakes are in white areas minus a very few. You don't see too many kids spending $20 a lure or $200 for a rod because they don't work and would rather have a playstation or transformers. Seniors are fewer because many have to worry about healthcare costs and not too many 80 yr olds can throw a pounder all day.Walleyes and crappies it is! Kids its bass and bluegills!

Posts: 8781 | It's not difficult to figure out. 1. Minorities typically live in areas that don't have muskies, and even if they did, you probably wouldn't want to fish there anyway. 2. Muskie fishing is not a cheap hobby. It's like golf -- the reason you see so many middle aged white men is because they are the only ones who can afford it 3. As far as why there aren't more women? Well... Getting up at 4:30 in the morning to go out in the cold and rain, to do a lot of pointless exercise for the chance to catch a big, ugly, scary green slimy fish with a lot of teeth, that you just put back in the water? Most women aren't that stupid! Edited by esoxaddict 1/25/2010 5:07 PM

Does this mean I have to knock out my front teeth and buy a flannel to cut the sleeves off if I want to keep fishing musky? 20-65 is a pretty wide range. That like saying 20-65 year olds are more likely to have a job. I'm 25 and a musky addict. I would say most people that have this addiction are either finacially stable or crazy enough about it they don't care. It's like crack. I'm still not sure which one of the 2 I am though. Lol

Posts: 8781 | I know that first poster was just trying to stir the pot but... I gotta say something, as usual. This will probably get pulled, possibly rightly so. I've been at this fishing thing since 1974, and muskies since 2004. Not all that long in the muskie arena, but I have spent enough time around muskie anglers and their ilk over the last 6 years to say this: If you were one of those folks from some other demographic, on the outside looking in, at Mr. white, middle aged, pickup truck driving, northwoods bar drinking, [insert character trait here] muskie angler? I'm guessing there's not more diversity in muskie angling because we scare the #*#* out of them! Edited by esoxaddict 1/26/2010 2:22 AM

My wife tried to get me to fish with an aqaintance of her's dad, now he was only about 12 years older than me in his mid 60's, and I tried to get him hooked first on Pike fishing on Delavan. I thought we would advance to the musky lakes. Each time I brought him out he would cast for about 90 minutes and then want to bobber fish the rest of the day for bluegills!! I had enough of that and didn't fish with him the rest of the year. Once my dad hit his mid 60's he would take 3 casts, sit down and have a beer, take 3 casts, sit down and have a beer ... I think the older people just can't handle the casting all day. Also as someone said earlier, it is an expensive sport. I have a buddy who is self employed and a musky fisherman, but he doesn't make that much money. His boat is 40 years old, and when I have gone with him to the musky shows, he would spend maybe $20.00 on a lure or two when I was plunking down $125.00 on several. The true musky fisherman is a fanatic just like a golfer, and will need to spend money to obtain what ever he wants for his sport. In the past two years, since my kids are grown, I splurged on myself and bought a new boat and a new F150 for musky fishing. My wife gives me hell for it all the time though and I have to go with her whenever she wants to Jareds!

Posts: 335 Location: Minnesota | I happen to think that there is diversity in musky fishing just like anything else. I live in northern Minnesota and I will tell you that the percentage of anglers who are not white is probably pretty close to the percentage of the population in the area that is not white. What is the big deal anyways? So what if someone is or isn't musky fishing. I don't love this sport because of someone else doing it or not doing it. You want diversity? I am Norwegian and the guy I fish the most with is Irish. I got your diversity right here!

Typical musky fisherman are..... Selfish, Thats my hot spot what the @#$% does that tourist think he's doing this is my lake. etc.etc.etc. All knowing, You must throw this color lure at this time, You have to use these hooks with only this type of ring. Why are you using that line? that line is junk you gotta try this line. I found it is the best. etc.etc.etc. Have more ethics, You shouldn't use that measuring board, net, glove, You will rub off to much slime! What are you measuring that under 40'' fish for put her back! HEY KID LET IT GO! there is no reason to keep a fish anymore. etc.etc.etc. Half crazy- borderline loony, Spend tens of thousands on boats and gear, rods and reels, live bait, and lures. Spend a weeks vacation waking up at 4am and fishing till after dark every day. Just to catch a few nice fish only to throw them back. etc.etc.etc. Well.... this is what I think the average angler-person thinks of a'' typical muskie fisherman'' But I love to fish for them because I am a typical muskie fisherman.

Posts: 153 | One of the great things about living the the US of A is that we have choices. People can choose to fish for whatever they want whether it be muskies, perch or catfish. As some have mentioned in this string many people don't like to cast for hours and be satisfied with one follow. Musky fishing is a crazy sport and I would admit to being a little crazy when it comes to musky fising. I would say there is plenty of diversity in musky fishing and who really cares anyway.

Posts: 829 Location: Maple Grove, MN | Yeah, a large percentage of Muskie fishermen are white men, but then all outdoors type sports have a lot of white men doing them. I think that white men in the 20-65 age group are typically working full time, going to school, or trying to find a job if they don't have one, and want to get outside as often as they can. They usually have some money and have the physical ability to do a few things. I don't think it makes a lot of difference what outdoor sport you are talking about, a large percentage will be white men in the 20-65 age frame. That is a pretty active group of people who like being outside. Whether its fishing, softball, golf, running, tennis, or whatever, white men like doing it. Even if they can't jump.

Location: Illinois | Women are a growing demographic for sure. Other minorities? Not that much, but they're out there in small numbers. Musky fishing is nonsense to street wise folk, just like NASCAR is. If you're interested in improving minority participation, you oughta start a program that takes inner city people and introduces them to musky fishing. Call it "Hook a Brutha Up". ps i love black people, and it's okay with me that they don't want any part of "a crazy white mans sport".

I would venture to bet that it is not ''typical''of most muskie fisherman. And also not ''typical'' of most muskie fisherman that visit this web site. As for the golfer comparison.... Any bets on who is the Tiger Woods of the muskie fishing industry? LOL! I enjoy playing golf too but don't visit any of those websites.

Posts: 97 Location: Pickering, ON | The only real commonality to musky fisherfolk is that we fish muskies. Beyond that, we are full of diversity - skin colour, background, religion, politics, and everything else under the sun. As has been pointed out, can you really even say that in a given area it is disproportionate in terms of diversity? If 90% of the northwoods is inhabited by middle age white men, and 90% of musky fisherfolk fall into the same class, than you really can't say there's a diversity issue, can you? It's simply representative of the population. Edited by JeffinPickering 1/26/2010 1:42 PM
