Posts: 291 Location: Minneapolis | A 12" phantom? I'm sure it will look incredible in the water and get more than its share of strikes, but will it ever hook and hold a fish? I lose so many with 8" phantoms, I shudder to think what the catch ratio would be with one that weighs half again as much.

Posts: 540 Location: MN | rpike I'm not trying to start a fight or call you a liar but I can olny think of one fish that I've lost on a 8"phantom and I don't think any lure would have held that jumping little spaz.

Posts: 4343 Location: Smith Creek | Hi Tim, First off I LOVE the phantoms, easily my favorite glider. But I, too, have a horrible hook-up ratio. Do you let them take it for a second or set right away? Or twitch the bait hard enough to set hooks? Set when you see the strike or feel it? BTW, I will be getting a few 12" regardless.

Location: Grand Rapids, MI | My guess is that it isn't the bait causing problems as much as it is the hook. There's lots of flex in those 3/0 RB hooks before they penetrate past the barb. Depending on your hookset style you may be more prone to loosing fish. If you are loosing a lot of fish I would try a different hook.

Do you let them take it for a second or set right away? Or twitch the bait hard enough to set hooks? Set when you see the strike or feel it? BTW, I will be getting a few 12" regardless. I love phantoms, too, and I have an 8" that's money (I'm pretty sure I could get a follow in my bathtub with it, and probably even get the fish to hit), but unless I really need it's magic mojo, I throw something else, because fish throw it so easily. With 6" phantoms, I don't have that problem. My hook-up ratio is better when I work the 8" slower, but it's still not very good, and my number of strikes is higher when I work it more erratically. Interesting comment about hook styles. I tried pinching the barbs on one of my 8" phantoms, and my catch-to-strike ratio was still about 50%. Edited by rpike 1/13/2010 4:51 PM

Location: MN | My order is in for a 12" Squirrelly! ![]() A good friend is at the St. Paul show right now and gave me the run down. Sounds like they are $50 and come in all current and new patterns. You can put in an order now and pick them up at the MN Musky Expo. As noted by Happy Hooker, there is a limited supply being made. Edited by Mak51 1/13/2010 6:35 PM

Posts: 540 Location: MN | I would say that 90% of my fish on them come within 10ft of the boat so I can usualy see them hit then I wait just a second then hammer those hooks home. I guess I never knew they were a poor hooking bait now I'll prob miss all my phantom fish. I do think I'll NEED at least 2 12" in crappie soft tail and reg.

Posts: 1243 Location: Musky Tackle Online, MN | The 9" and 12" are all going to be made of wood. If they go over well they'll likely go to a mold so they can go to plastic in the future. Aaron

Posts: 145 | Just got back from the sportsman's show. Todd told me the 9" should be in regular production before the season, so you don't necessarily have to order one ahead of time. If you really want a 12" I would probably pre-order it to ensure you get one. I can't wait for mine, definitely a big fish bait. Matt Edited by mbani 1/13/2010 9:42 PM

Anyone have any input on performance differences between the Phantoms that are made with wood vs. the ones made with plastic? I own an 8'' plastic one that tends to role on its sides while gliding. Definitely different action than my other gliders. wasn't sure if this is a quality of the plastic phantoms, phantoms in general, or my specific phantom. Dan

Posts: 75 Location: Aurora, IL. | Dan, I own a lot of Phantoms, use them a ton. If your experiencing the roll on the glide I would check two things: 1) Check to be sure the eyelet on the front of the bait is perfectly horizontal. 2) Check to be sure the hooks were assembled with the proper alignment, the back of the hook should lay flat when you hold the bait verticle. If your speaking of the Phantom softails make sure the post in the rear of the bait that holds the tail is as straight as possible. Then make sure the tail is in the proper position. I like the mold seem of the tail facing straight up. Also, Im sure the roll on your bait is not right but some phantoms have unusual carracteristics. A few of the baits in my phantom arsenal act slightly different than the rest. I cant explain it but often that is the bait that gets eaten. Sometimes what I think is the proper action the fish prove me wrong. By the way, its the back and forth roll on the pause and hang that they just cant resist. Hope this helps! Joe
