Wondering what boat/rigs people own and the vehicle they are using to tow them. Currently, I am running an old Ranger 680 tiller and towing with a 2006 Chevy TrailBlazer. Eventually I am going to upgrade my boat and I am trying to feel out what my TB could handle or if I need a new vehicle... thought I would see what everyone else is using.

Sorry if a similar post has been put up but the search function isn't working for me.

01 Chevy 1/2 ton, ext cab short box, 5.3L. Boat is a 690 with a single axle trailer. I'd consider this truck underpowered and under braked to make towing this boat non-issue. It works pretty hard...

edit: we've towed this boat with a friends f150 that was two years newer with the 5.4 and it was the same result...used an F350 w/7.3 power stroke too, got the job done very well but at 12mpg, well...lame...

The 2500 duramax, now that was smooth sailing...18mpg too towing around 65mph...next purchase please.

08 GMC Sierra, 5.3L, towed my 618 single axel with ease, I've towed a 619 with it as well and does the job.

2004 Tracker Targa 17' single console with 90 hp 4 stroke. Tow it with either a 1996 Chevy Tahoe, 350 automatic or better yet a 2003 Ford Excursion V10. Excursion will pull anything and pass anything but a gas station!

03 Dodge Ram Quad Cab 4X4 1500 4.7 liter V8. 02 Tuffy 1700. This truck has enough power, but doesn't have the tow package, so I pull the boat with overdrive off. The Tow package would help. My brother in law's 06 Mega Cab Dodge Diesel pulls it like it's not even there. 19 mpg out of the diesel as well.

02 Ranger 620 behind an 08 Nissan Titan crew cab 4 x 4. 5.6 liter has plenty of power and with the stock 20" rims, it has larger brakes to boot. Real comfortable ride. Gas mileage could be better, but then I am pulling a barge

I have a Javelin Venom 17 w/ a 115 Johnson. I tow it with a 2005 Hemi Durango. The durango has a lot of power to pull and unlike my last vehicle has enough weight and good brakes so it doesn't get pushed around. I'm getting 14 MPG towing...which isn't terrible. It would have been better if it was an '06 or newer with MDS.

Tow a Lund Pro-V 197 GL with an 07 Tundra with a 5.7 V8. Truck struggles up the slightest inclines and gas mileage is 9-10 mpg.

2005 Alumacraft Navigator 165 with 90 hp Yamaha, Shoreland'r 2300# trailer, all behind a 2003 Ram Quad Cab. I love the fact that this truck (I feel) can pull just about anything. I also now tow a 28-1/2 foot 5th wheel....out of overdrive with either set-up. Next truck will be (crossing fingers here) a one-ton single rear axle to tandem pull.

Gas mileage...well...I'll just say it's a HEMI.

it's on a tandem axle trailer, which is heavier to pull, but the ride is quite noticeably smoother than with the single axle trailer. surge brakes on both trailer axles really make it easy to stop, too.

the new Dodges are great trucks. when you put the hammer down, the 5.7 HEMI has got plenty of passing power even when towing the boat. it's a huge difference over the same boat behind my previous '02 5.4 Ford. you can get lost inside this truck and it's really comfortable. i do wish a locking tailgate was standard, though.

pulling the boat at 70mph it consistently gets 10.6mpg; that jumps to 13mpg if i put the cover on the boat. i was surprised it made that much difference: 20% is a LOT of gas savings on a long trip.

Sounds like a good boat cover would pay for itself in a single season. Mike, have you noticed a difference in mileage having the topper on your truck compared to an open bed?

exactly. i paid $135 for the cover, just a standard one from Gander. it's paying itself off pretty quickly.

i haven't had a truck without a topper in years, so i can't speak to that firsthand. however, they did an episode of MythBusters about it, and used fuel flow meters on a single truck with open bed, tonneau cover, tailgate down, no tailgate, and net.
the net was the most fuel effecient, by a decent margin.

Crestliner 1750 Deep-V, dual console windshield with a 'lil 90 hp motor, single axle (w/ surge brakes) trailer pulled behind an '02 Trail Blazer. Trail Blazer does just fine. No problems.

6.0 liter turbo-diesel piece a crap f250 that usually sits in the shop and a 18' tuffy that sits in the barn soon to be replaced with a ranger 690. working on paying the bills for the 6.0 liter turbo-diesel problem that ford gave it's customers so that i can afford to use it to pull a boat again someday.

6.0 liter turbo-diesel ... it's not "if" it will go bad on you, it is "when"

I'm running a 2000 Toyota Tundra for my 2005 619. Underpowered at times but it worked for the last four seasons and the Tundra's paid for and at 135K miles she's plugging right along with no major problems.

2006 Tuffy Esox Magnum and a 2008 Toyota Tundra Crewmax. The truck pulls my rig fantastic. Fuel mileage on the interstate is around 12mpg, and on a county hwy around 14mpg. Love the fishing platform on the Mag., and love the way the truck pulls it down the road!!!

I absolutely love my Tundra. I haven't had a single problem with it since I purchased it in 2004. I get about 12 mpg towing the Tuffy.

2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Crestliner 192 on a tandem axle EZ Loader with surge brakes on both axles. Jeep has plenty of power but the back end sits low. Have to use a raised hitch to have a level tow. 10 roundtrips to LOTW = 16,000 miles, plus lots of local trips. I'd love to get a bigger truck but the Jeep is paid for and has only 60,000 miles.
