Subject: Lake Vermilion

My girlfriend and I are planning on making a musky trip to Lake Vermilion on October 2, 3, and 4. We have never fished on this enormous body of water. We will be staying at a campground on Wakemup Bay. I am looking for a point in the right direction. She is hoping to put her first fish in the boat. What better time than a full moon weekend!! I sure hope it happens. Thanks for any input.

For such a short trip and a new water at a great time of year, do yourself a favor and hire a musky guide. There are several excellent guides that will bust their butts to put you on fish.

Good luck.

I went to Vermilion for the first time in July and caught my person best (51") under crappy conditions.

Not sure if you will figure it out in 3 days. I spent a week there in August and wished i would have hired a guide.
Maybe next time.
Good Luck

It's more rewarding seeing or catching a fish without the expense of a guide. If we don't see or catch anything, it's not the end of the world. Sure, catching a fish is memorable, but so is the first time I'd ever seen or fished Lake Vermilion.

Guest, Big V is definately a beautiful place to visit and fish. I would personally focus on wind blown shore lines and points, they can usually yield some sightings for sure. The cabbage out there is hit or miss, if the cabbage is still green, fish it! When you do locate fish, mark them and hit them at the peak time periods.

I'm not sure if I'm in the minority but not catching a fish is the end of the world for me. When you plan and look forward to your musky outing like most of us you work hard for results. Guides can shrink the curve in learning where fish are at in ways you could never reward yourself. They are on this water everyday very much in tune to whats going on. Catching fish is as rewarding to them as is you. If your on a budget I completely understand, but if you have the resources don't short yourself on ego. Shrink the curve and maximize your time on the water efficiently.

I'm heading up to the V on Thursday for a fishing/business trip. Might only get a few hours each morning to fish. We're in Daisy Bay. How much pressure does the east side get compared to the west?

I might just have to hit up the night bite, sounds like water temps are in the upper 60's to low 70's and it's supposed to stay moderately warm this week. I just hope I can actually fish. I am still physically ill after that performance at Lambeau yesterday.

I don't see turnover until mid-late Oct at the earliest. With the way the weather has been maybe sometime in Nov.......

Just got back from my V trip. I only was able to fish 'skies from 6-9 on Saturday morning. Fished the Daisy Bay rocks, moved one fish that was well over 50 on a Super Model. That was it. Water temp was 67ish, I even jumped in the lake on Friday night. We wasted 30 minutes looking for weeds, and never found anything healthy at all, so we stuck to rocks. I did fish walleyes on Saturday and we beat the hell out of them. Jigs n minnows in 5-8 off of sand/rock flats.

Skim ice on the bays and even parts of the main lake when the wind dies. Big Bay is at 39 degrees. State record time.

Water temps are 38-39* The ciscos are about done, but some are still lingering.
put a 43 incher in the boat the other day and lost a really nice one yesterday.
Everyone seemed to have moved to the East end, because I didn't see anyone today. Had to break ice in Spring Bay this AM.to get out. (18*)
It's still 10* above normal air temps for the next week, but cold at night.

The Pounders are starting to Hurt this old man,...... But I ain't leaving with out a @%%#&$$ Big A$$ Fish.

#*^@ Jerome, you're making me think I should be up there right now!!!
"lots of big fish arcs in 19-29 fow....38-40 deg water....ciscos"....reminds me a little of Halloween/"Thee" weekend last fall!
Sharpen those hooks and they won't fall off man. I went out with Kevin this past weekend. Boy, stories don't do Pam justice...what an amazing lady! Didn't get any fish in the net, but had a blast with them and hope to fish with him and visit them in the future.

Good luck Jerome, I really hope you're able to get a big one in the net before the hard water is here. (I'd come up there this weekend, but I've got to go watch the Packers kick some butt)

Well it's getting harder to get out of Spring Bay because of the ice.
Stayed on the West End yesterday and had the lake to myself, not much action Throwing big baits, so I trolled for about as long as I could stand (1hr) The water temps are dropping...38-39*
I was headed up Wakeumup Narrows and didn't even make it to Ludlows, The channel was solid ice.
Headed back home for Thanksgiving, then I'll try the troling bite on Big Bay on Black Friday, If it's not frozen.
Later Jerome

Too much scattering of baitfish...no pod clusters....Daisy bay was iced over Sat morning ..but did unthaw midmorning......I prefer some falling water temp...watertemp now is at the end and stable...I have been doing the troll up there for many years now and have a good idea when to be there...have caught one monster fish the day before complete iceover but odds are low trolling....heard there is still a dawg bite up there...but dont need to take hooks out of those size fish....

You will catch 10 times more fish on dawgs I am only looking for 1 fish.......some of the bigger fish caught this year were caught by guys putting the dawgs away and casting big cranks....food for thought.
