Can you tell where it's squeaking from? Is it the paddle on the handle sqeaking?

it sounds kinda in the area of the drag or maybe inside near the gears. what does a squeking reel usually mean?

I'm no engeneer but I would assume the sqeaking would mean something is rubbing somewhere and it would have to be two materials rubbing together that would produce the sqeak. Brass gears would not sqeak with an aluminum sideplate I don't believe and even if it did it would wear the sideplate quick enough that it wouldn't be an issue for long. I can't think of anything else that could be rubbing together that's why I wondered about the paddle on the handle.

I would stip it down ASAP. See if you can tell where its rubbing, if at all, Clean completely then re lube/grease, and see if that works. If not, get it replaced.

Mine did the same thing, I took it apart and it had alot water in it. Clean, dry, relube. Problem is i've already had to do this 3 times and it still gets water in it somehow just from casting.

I've had the same problem. Already sent one of the two I own in for repair twice and this weekend she's grinding again. It's definatley something to do with the drag and anti backlash. It's like the anti backlash gets a flat spot or something because if I loosen it up a half turn the sound goes away. I have another one that is showing signs of the same problem. Yes I work them hard. I had two smaller skis on this weekend at leech and fortunately for the reel the drag system was not tested hard. It was grinding and scrapeing as drag worked off. I know others are extremely happy with there revo's but I cant trust this reel right now. I gotta say Im very disappointed. The exterior is built like a tank but the guts just dont stand up. Sorry about the negativity but Im bummed.

Try a few drops of oil in the friction cap.

Ok, I found out what MINE is doing. Inside the sideplate is the race that the backlash control tabs ride in. The spool is rubbing on the side of the race! All you guy's check the side of your spool, mine has a ring worn right in the side of the aluminum. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mine is doing it also. When i loosen the anti-backlash the noise goes away...when you tighten it down it starts rubbing...and this is the second toro i'm on...the first one i had the drag gave out after the first trip. Back to my St. Croix's. The Toro will make a good bass reel since i only do that 3 or 4 times a year. Should have known better.

Did you ck the 3 screws that hold the race to the side plate, see if they came loose ???? this is the side that the spool is rubbing right ???

Yes, i did Pikemaster, Thats what it was. One came lose. But i was halving problems with it engaging after casting 10% of the time, also and the anti-reverse bearing is shot now. I sent it in and got it back quickly. The only problem was it does'nt even seem like they opened the reel! Same problems still. One of those sisuations where i was probably better off doing fixing it myself.

The same thing happen on a Curado E this spring, I used some silicon glue on the screw threads so they won't back off. I wish that side plate was ALUM. and not a POLY-RESIN, just silicon glue the 3 screws and that should not happen anymore, WOW the Toro has dual anti-rev, I'm surprise you could blow one out. Just got back from Canada with a group of 10 guys, we had 8 Toro's with us and was on the water 14 hours a day and not one missed a beat. I got a 4.6:1 Toro before I went and this reel can pull any DCG10-13 without any ressistance/torque at all, you can't burn them but at night to slow roll a DCG 10-13, all I can say is WOW. If you use a power handle you must make sure that U cast with the reel handle paddle facing down, or cast the reel with the reel sideways so the reel handle is facing upwards. If any reel engauges on a cast , say goodbye to the anti-rev bearing.

Sooooo..... what the heck do we do now?
I have the same exact issue as Lundbob and Muskybug.
I sent my reel in twice and all ABU said in the service tag was that they lubed the reel. It works for about 1/2 a day then the problem returns.
Pikemaster the problem isnt the cranking power, she'll crank. That is until you experience what we have then it grinds. I respect what you say about reels any ideas on this one?
Thanks

I would call 1-800-228-4272 and ask for Customer Service / Pure Fishing IA. 51360 and try to get someone to help you out. Andrew Wheeler is the reel product mgr. very cool guy, ask for his email and sent him a email about your reel. If you got the reel used or you can't get ABU to service your reel without charging you, I would love to look at your reel and see what's up with it. But I would really make ABU step up and take care of your reel. U say the reel grinds ??? when the drags goes out ??? do you lock down your drag untill it won't turn anymore ???? You say the reel has a flat spot ??? when ?? reeling ??? maybe you should PM me back ???

Hello,

I think it is the same problem wich I have with one of my Shimano Curado 301 DSV. Have a look at the chematic of the Toro.

[url]http://www.mikesreelrepair.com/schematics/albums/userpics/REVO_TORO_61-HS_18_00.pdf

The part who makes the sound is part "41". This is the clicker who grips into the ratchet wheel. On this clicker there is a sheet of metal in form of an "U". Bend the "U" slightly together to reinforce the friction between the clicker and the ratchet. This friction pulls the the clicker into the ratchet. Is the friction to low, it creates a sound becouse the ratchet kicks the clicker back.

Bye, Dietmar

p.s.: Sorry for my bad English

Inside the Side plate where the Race is, is a small round bushing (Part 92) that the Spool shaft rides on. It get's worn and allows the spool to move to far towards the race resulting in the two making contact. I have some pic's here of the side of my spool and you can see the ring worn in it from it making contact with the race. It all comes down to that little bushing. If you flip it over to the other side, problem solved, but i'm sure it wont be long until it wears all the way through, and needs to be replaced. Mine is only 3 monthes old and i just can't believe how fast it wore out. Here's the pic's. Hope this helps!

I don't own a Toro, but it sounds to me as if those who are having the problem are tightening the spool tension far more than is necessary. With modern anti-backlash systems, there's not really a need to tighten the spool tension beyond the point where side play in the spool is eliminated. The thin plates and bushings at either end of the spool are not meant to withstand great pressure. Besides, modern centrifugal and magnetic cast control systems apply braking dynamically as it is needed in the cast, whereas spool tension applies a static force.

I could be wrong but I haven't seen many, if any, similar posts regarding the Curado E. The Toro sounds great but maybe Abu needs a season or two to work out the "bugs"?

Try and back off on it and see how many casts it takes to get backlashes. I've had 3 St. Croix AC300's for 2 -3 years and have not had a problem, rock solid reels. I've had the Toro for 3 months and have already gone through 2 of them. It's nothing more than a heavy duty bass reel just like the rest of Garcia's i've owned.

Sorry but it's just frustrating.

nothing wrong with the reel...it wasnt meant to be used in this manner. It's those who hyped it as a muskie reel that are at fault.

Most of the equipment we use for muskie fishing is not built to endure the sort of abuse we put it through, but that excuse only works for so long...

I remember back about 5 years ago when I just got started chasing these stupid green fish, and a particular guide said something along the lines of "I nver met a reel I couldn't break"

I walked away thinking "what an idiot, what does he DO to those reels that he breaks that many of them..."

Years later? Well, I've never met a reel I couldn't break either. This is not a shot at Abu or any other particular manufacturer, but...

Muskie fishing has been around long enough, and there are enough guides, tournament anglers, and hard core muskie anglers out there breaking the same parts on the same reels year after year after year that SOMEONE ought to be able to step up and come out with a product that stands up to the rigors of muskie fishing.

I'm not ecactly hard core -- I don't put in more than 30 - 50 days in a typical season, but I ave, on average, two reels a season that basiclally stop working for one reason or another. Every year there is some "new and improved" reel that's supposed to be the cat's meow, that everyone runs out and buys during show season, thinking they have finally found a reel that's built for muskie fishing. Then, inevitably, by the end of July whatever cheap/plastic/soft metal/faulty part or parts are the weakness of that particular reel are going bad, and not just one or two, but EVERYBODY'S reels have the same problems.

It's gotten to the point where when I hear all the hype I think "ok, let's wait a year and see what people have to say THEN.." So far I've not been dissapointed. Even the best new "tanks" turn out to be turds more often than not.

The sad part is that if anyone build a reel that would actually last two or three seasons without failing on one way or another, people would be buying them left and right, and happily buying another in a few years when the first one wore out, even if it was $250.

Is it just that it's cheaper to make low quaility stuff and deal with the warranty claims and lose your customer base to the next batch of uninformend consumers who buy your stuff based on hype, or is it REALLY that diffucult to make a reel that lasts more than a season?

Yes it is meant to be used in this manner. Their own website says as much.

"The seven High Performance Corrosion Resistant (HPCR®) bearings and Duragear™ brass gears add to the reel’s durability and long life. With 22-pounds of maximum drag, our famous Carbon Matrix™ Drag System is double the strength of similar competitor models. This is particularly important with the hook set on a lake trout, turning a tough snook or bull red, or from keeping a monster muskie from entering a brush pile."
