Lots of new toys this year!! I would have to say the cowgirl was the best bait of the year last year and probably the years before that. Do you think there is going to be a bait this year that beats the cowgirl. What bait do you think is going to be the hottest on the water this year?

Me personally, think the cowgirl is going to take the gold again.

Mike,
That is a good bait. I have a few of the early water goat prototypes. I can't recall the type of wood that they are made out of that gives them a near perfect neutral bouyancy. I know it's something that comes out of Malaysia but what it is used for is anyone's guess. The great part about it is that the dude making them has absolutely no interest in marketing the things since it is a true hobby. If you've got one you are one of at most half a dozen people who will ever get them.

Same guy has another bait called a curake that takes some getting used to but just put a ridiculous number of fish in my boat last summer.

I think head to head a Glittertail might overtake the cowgirl in the bucktail word. As far as overall when most are throwing DBL 10's of course they are bound to get the most fish. I know guys that throw nothing but DBL 10's.

The perfect bait is a hard swimbait but thus far the majority of musky fisherman have not gained confidence in using them. There is nothing that even comes close to the realism that a good swimbait can provide. You can swim a swimbait deep, shallow, fast, slow, twitch it, stop and go, at the surface and even walk the dog. And perhaps best of all, they look exactly like a naturally swimming baitfish.

Im guessing the thing that is going to get eaten the most in any lake is probably going to be perch. so, with that said, put some perch on your lines!

I had 2 custom Huntertail bucktails made. These are a double tail bait, on the order of the double Eagletails that George used to make, but with the addition of a #15 blade. Yes, I said a #15 blade. I believe that the Cowgirl comes with a #13 blade as the largest. During the Expo I pickedup the cowgirl and compared blades. The cowgirls was smaller.

I bought the blades from Stamina Tackle a year ago and had Matt Nelson of Huntertail tie me a lure to put them on.
There is also a magnum willowblade on the market now. You can get those from lakeshake'r.com according to the sticker on the blade. He also had the #15 blades at the Mn. Expo. http://www.customspinnersunlimited.com/

or http://lurepartsonline.com/cart.php for stamina tackle to find the big blades

Looks like the blade size wars is getting hot.

Correction, I just searched the stamina website and I do not see the magnum blades that I mentioned above. The largest they carry is a #12. Sorry about that.

I did look at the customspinners link I provided and they do have the blades listed in their catalog. Made a slight error there too. It's a #16 blade and not a 15 like I said. oops. It's late and I'm going to bed before I make any more mistakes.

I do not have any connection to this company.

I dont know if its the best bait, but I'll probably put at least 10 in the boat on Big Joes again this year. My first of last year was on a Small Joe in 2 fow, a friend got 1 on the last weekend of our season out deep.
I doubled a few times last year on them and tripled once as well. VERY PRESSURED WATER HERE! Has become a confidence bait, and definitely comes out if they are not moving.
I also plan on catching many fish on a Lee Lures chopper again. I had soooooo many fish attack that thing last fall, including one really fat one that pooed all over my boat! Many multiple fish nights on those too.

Jed, realism?
The hot lure was made out of mylar strands and a couple of big spinner blades.
They don't know crap about realism.
I've given up on realism.
I love swimbaits for bass. They cover a long distance to chase them down and eat them, but I don't think that muskies are impressed with realism.
I like the looks of your lures, and I will try some realistic stuff on them in some gin-clear waters after turnover this year.

If realism wasn't important, then muskie fisherman wouldn't fish with live suckers. It is hard to beat a lure that looks and acts just like a prey item.

Give it time, you will see some very realistic hard swimbaits that kill musky.

Jed, I was just joshing ya!
I think that there is a huge market for natural lures, and once the muskies get tired of every outlandishly weird thing that we can throw at them, they will become more suseptible to lures with natural actions and natural looks that give off natural vibes.

i dont think there is an "ultimate bait" given that dcg and dawgs have got alot of fish the past few seasons. i think bucktails are close to the ultimate bait but we really have not seen to many real swinbaits for muskys yet. i think they may beat everything else. where has the musky bait makers been on this one, bass guys have been getting huge bass on swin baits for years now. we must have been blined by the flashabou. castaic has been making awesome baits for years now, this year they have the swimmin cisco and the ones i want the ROCK HARD swinbaits. ultimate bait...no such thing!!! great baits... lots of them!!!
