Location: Rhinelander | Does any one know the layout or even better yet, have pictures of the deck/interior of this boat. Interested in a 96 thru 99/2000 model. By the way was this boat made in 2000? I thought I read somewhere 99 was the last year of production????
Is this the same as a 692VS (same year class)? If I'm on the right track the 690 is single vs the 692 is a double console. Are the rod lockers, livewell/baitwells and storage the same or are they differant?

The 690 was actually made until 2000, by special order only. I have a 2001 model year 690T that was ordered in 2000. I'd send you pictures, but guessing you are not interested in the layout of the tiller model. My friend has a 690 single console and we could send a few pics of it if you'd like.
The 692 is a dual console and the layout is just a bit different than the 690. Since the side tank does not go the length of the boat on the port side, the storage compartments are set up a bit differently. Here is a link to a 690 for sale right now on this site. Maybe he has a few more pictures he could share with you. There are also a couple 692's on another board there as well. One of them has 2 consoles and one has the full windshield.

I put up a reply on the MHunter board to your same questions....
690's are a great musky rig..good for big and small waters..I've put mine into 100 acre puddles with crappy landings in Vilas to large MN lakes...handles both with ease...
692 is a dual as mentioned...most guys who own or have owned these boats have nothing but good things to say...they usually sell fast when they pop up if they were well taken care of...

| say, my father in law was looking at this boat also. I have the 98' 690vs that reef hawg is talking about. The price on that rig seems a little high. I purchased mine last year with a 9.9 four stroke kicker and all the deck extensions, graphs,cover, two but seats and in like new condition for 12,500. If you would like some pictures of the layout on this rig I could sent you some. It sure is a nice layout. |

| No plans to sell in the near future Hodag, but I'm always looking so ya never know...BTurgeons 620 had me interested but I need a bigger garage first!
GLog, I would say you price you paid for your 690 was the exception not the rule.
imo the seller could have asked for thousands more than you paid and we would have gotten it..easily...so that one for 11,500 is a steal if it's as clean as it looks and from what a friend told me who went to look at it, he was an hour late to snag it...imo that seller has the price too low too..but maybe he just wants to sell it fast and doesn't care to get what he could...good 690s can and do well for 15-18k...there is a 692 for sale now he is asking in the 19s for...that is a stretch but supply is low on good 690s and demand seems to be high with what new and even used 619/620s are going for...

Just found out a friend of mine has been looking at it, not sure if he is the one with the deal pending or not. One thing seems certain, 690's sure don't last long on the classified boards.

Location: menasha wi 54952 | That one is a 96. Prior to 97 the hulls were different. All bilge and livewell functions happend through the side of the hull. This caused stress cracks and sometimes even rotting of the glass from the inside. Prior to 97 they came standard with a single axle trailer. Not sure about steering. I think hydraulic steering came into play in 97 as well. 690s are single console, 90 inches wide, 19'. 692s are dual console, 92 inches wide 19'.
Here is the layout of mine. 1998. Had it for sale last fall. Thinking about selling it again. PM me if you want more details and pics.

Location: Contrarian Island | MReiter..not sure I fully agree with the hulls being different..unless Ranger replaced both the bottom and top deck of mine, (which could have happened I guess) in 2001, which wouldn't make sense since it is titled as a 95, the hull of mine is the same as 97 and newer..as all my bilge and livewell stuff happens out the back...they may have changed where those functions take place but in my discussions w/ Ranger to find out the history on my boat they said the hull of a 2000 was the same as my 95 titled boat...so not sure who is right on that...
also they are not 19' long...they are 18'9"...
to my knowledge a 692 is the same width as a 690...the 692 is just the number they used to dictate dual console...not the width of the 692.

Location: menasha wi 54952 | Ok. I am not going to argue on minor details like the length. You got me on that one. The "Hull" itself is the same. Prior to 97 everything was thru hull not out the back. Look at the link for the one listed. Thru hull on the drivers side.
Right now I have a 98 690 and a 98 692 sitting in my garage. They are titled at 90" and 92" wide. They are physically different as well. The 692s livewells are wider and there is more space between them in front of the battery compartment. Are my titles wrong like yours is? Anything is possible.
Either way....awesome boats. The main difference is two consoles and center rod locker.

Location: minocqua, wi. | show another pic of that white boat ... i love the purple and grey ... does it have the purple trim on white as well? i'm with bn on this one and always thought the description was only differentiating the single vs. dual console and not a difference in hull/beam. learn something new every day.
it's an awesome boat with a huge fan-base and big resale and makes you wonder why it doesn't come back. not just for the money but for performance reasons (storage, lake size, storage etc...) i'd rather have a used 690 in great shape powered like bn's than a brandy new 619 or 620. |

Location: Eau Claire, WI | I had a 96 it was a great boat, I bought it from a guy who was a tournament walleye angler and he used his livewells a lot. No issues with the through-hull discharge ports. However: I can see if there was any boat with that style port having water seepage issues if indeed the seal on the fitting was bad. The guy that had my old boat ran it hard but he took very good care of it and I ran it for three seasons including in some ugly-rough water in MN, I had one spot of minor crazing on the hull that is directly porportional to where the front deck started. Suspect this was from running with a full 44 gals of fuel and taking some rough water at an angle but it was not through the clear-coat. My 96 had Sea Star Hydraulic steering and a single axle trailer. I used to plug my livewell and use it for storage, worked great and hyper-dry.
Here's the thing I don't get about people being hung up on single axle trailers with the 690/2's. Ranger today is putting both the 1850 Reatta and 1860 Angler on single axle trailers. Both of those models are wider and heavier than the 690 series, yet it is currently accepted without question because people trust what Ranger puts on the market. Those I've talked to with the 1860's say they tow just fine...so it should be logical that a 690 on single axle shouldn't be an issue.
What amazes me to this day is that with all the positive feedback on this style layout, no one is currently making that layout any longer. 690's gone for 9- years+, 618VS gone, older Tuffy series gone. Yet the used ones get scarfed up like candy if they are clean and not priced rediculously and a lot of guys are re-powering them with newer motors and keeping them. I wish I had a dollar for every person I've heard say, "I wish "R" would put a consol in their 618 tiller or the comment that "the 690/2 was the best boat they ever built".
I am leaning heavy toward purchasing a new Tuffy X 190, but the economy has my wife and I both a little concerned about dropping that kind of money on a boat right now. If we choose to stay conservatively from a financial sense I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to run another 690 from 96 or newer model years. If they are in good condition and taken care of they will treat you well and have decent resale value.

Location: Delavan, WI | I love my 690, its a 99 model and wouldn't sell it for the world- handles beatifully in chop and fishes like a dream -I paid close to $17,000 a year and a half ago so that 96 for 11,500 is a steal- in my opinion whoever ends up with it is a lucky guy !!!! |

| Mark, I agree, you don't "need" a tandem axle trailer for a boat that weighs in at 1400 lbs...but I think the tandem axles do look nicer and do trailer maybe just a touch better at interstate speeds...I like to go 75+ to MN!
plus you get 4 tires rather than 2 if one should blow! ; )
a 618 tiller hull w/ a single console would be one sweet ride...ranger should build that... |
