Posts: 24 | dumb ? but how do you store rods over 8ft in a ranger? do they hold this long of a rod or is 8" really the limit as advertised? sc has several over 8ft which i am considering. thx ts

Lay them along the gunnel by the console, lay them on the left side from just behind the front deck on the floor towards the back deck.

Posts: 401 | I am thinking about offering a free red flag for all customs this year. That way they are legal when it is hanging out the back of the boat going down the road. Storage is always a problem but it is worth it when using a longer stick. Just built a 10 footer. Keith Edited by Professional Edge 3/8/2009 10:12 AM

Posts: 20219 Location: oswego, il | I am not sure why some boat companies do not get it with their rod boxes. They have had plenty of time to work on it. Some boats offer up 7ft even in a big boat. G3 had an 8'6' rod box in their 16ft boat years ago. Do boat companies not realize this affects a boat buying decision?

Posts: 444 Location: Indiana | In my 620, I could fit a 8'3" no problem in the top row. The bottom row is rated to 7'6", but there are places that hold 8'. Steve Heiting pointed out that you can cut the ends off of the rod tubes and fit in a longer stick. It looks like you could probably go t 9' or so in a couple of the spots without the rod tip hitting anything in the bow.

Posts: 24 | i am looking at a 619 or 1860 in the future. i like the idea of long rods. just seems silly if you spend this kind of money on a boat you may not be able to store your long musky rods. i can't leave them out as the kids might step on them. they need to go into storage when not being used. i wonder if the 619 and 1860 have less space than the 620 in the rod box? thx ts

Posts: 444 Location: Indiana | I think the 619, 620 and 1860 all have the same rod box. But, I don't know if the 1860 has room infront of the rod tubes for cutting the end off to extend them.

I am in between boats myself and rod storage is a frustrating issue. Here's the answers on rods... Ranger 619 , one or two 8's will not take 8/6". Lower rod tubes in 619's are really short. Ranger 1860, will take 8's easily and according to my local dealer who called Ranger, you can remove the caps from the rod tubes and get two 8'6" rods Yeah, I agree... Spend that much money on a boat and it's not musky rod friendly for longer rods. I am seriously looking at Tuffy boats because they offer the longest and most user friendly rod locker available in a center-line rod locker.

Posts: 24 | the tuffy's are on my list too - i think the 190 does not have a big enough cockpit for the family. i wish the 1860 had a removable rear deck like the 619/620 for the back person to be up in the air like the front. I wonder if you can get and 8'6" in a 620 after removing the rod holder ends? would only need 1 or 2 that long. right now i am leaning towards the 1860. everybody who has one seems to really like them and i will be on smaller water (under 5000 acres). thx ts

Posts: 311 | There is 2 tubes on an '02 620 Ranger that fit 9' rods. I dont know if they were modified, but they fit and the hatch closes completely.

Posts: 906 Location: Warroad, Mn | Just go to Okuma's telescoping rods. 8'-6" fold to around 7'6". I'll know soon what the 9'-3" will come down to, but I'll bet it'll be well under 8". Great rods as well. Doug Johnson

Very simple fix to get longer rods in your Ranger. take the front panel off where the bow switches are and you will see the end of the rod tubes. There is a cap over the ends that can be removed either by prying or cutting. You will now be able to safely store rods a little over 8'6. No the rod tip wont get hung up.

Posts: 221 | Not to push a boat I haven't ever been in before, but.... This is partly the reason I went with a Prinecraft Hudson this year. 9 foot rod lockers. ...never thought I would buy a Princecraft, but walked by it at the boat show at it pulled me in. Imo, nothing comparible for a Musky platform in that price range. I was speaking with a Brunswick rep at the show and he seemed amazed when I told him he'll see the Predator buyers demanding 9' lockers in the coming years. Posts: 350 Location: WESTERN WI | On that note, has anyone "perfected" storing longer rods outside ofv the rod locker with any special mounts or ideas they would like to share. I remember Mike Winther had a."ram mount?" Mounted in front of the counsle (tuffy x190 that I saw up.at spring bay/The V in 07) on the ram mount was a sectioned rod holder that held a few rods out of the way with the rod tips pointing towards the back, angled just off the counsle. It appeared that even a rough water ride would keep the rods from bouncing around, getting tangled in each other. I like that idea for rods kept out, but secure.

Mounted in front of the counsle yep, works great. been using some version of it for 8 years now. i don't have any good pics, but you can see it in the ones attached. all i did was add a ram ball to the gunnel near each console, then attached a wall-rack rod holder to the flat ram sonar mount. not sure where i copied the idea from. '97 681VS, custom. Nice boat! My new '12 Z118 is really nice though, just not for rod storage, although I'm happy with my 7'9" ers. That and the 4 stroke! Jeremy.

Posts: 4 | Recon boats have a 12 position 9'6" rod locker in the 2185 and 985 models the 785 has a 12 position 8'6" rod locker. Seems Recon is the only boat manufacturer actually has boats geared towards musky fisherman. Edited by muskynut1 3/5/2015 10:04 AM
