Subject: Sunglasses Suggestions

Just wanted to see if anyone has any advice on polarized sunglasses. In the past, I've always got a cheap pair of glasses or two throughout the year. Lately I've bought the Lindner's cheapies that go for about $15. This year I'm planning on getting a better quality brand in hopes of better performance and a longer life span. I've heard good things about the Solar Bats, but I wanted to get some input first. I'm also kinda intereted in the glasses that come with 3 different lens colors (I think H3O). Any advice on good brands or lens colors that folks seem to like?

Any input is much appreciated.

Dan

Hi Dan.

I haven't experimented much with different brands, but I have two pairs of the Costa Del Mar Fathoms that I really like. Why 2? Bought the blue mirror lens for the first pair -- great in bright sun, but on cloudy days, early mornings, after sunset, not so much. Backwater green lens is much better. Still, when it's almost dark (and you still want to see follows) even the backwater green lens is a bit dark. I've never tried an amber or sunrise lens, but I supsect that is the answer. But three pairs? No way. One thing I would definitely try to do before you commit to that sort of price tag is try them out. Even the best sunglasses in the world are no good if they start to hear your head/ears/nose/whatever after a couple hours. I got lucky with the Costas - I can wear them 12 hours and I don't even know they are there.

I'd be interested to try the interchangeable lenses, but worried about breaking them, losing them, etc.

Lots of guys like the Ocean Waves too.

p.s. lanyards.

I like having the option of changing lenses, which is available with the H30 glasses. I've had mine for several years now, and since I work in the field in the summer I'm wearing them every day. The black lenses now have some scratching, but this does not affect the sight through the lenses. These are also very lightweight and very comfortable to wear for hours upon hours. I'd highly recommend these glasses.

I also love having the interchangeable lens, i'm wearing Smith's this year. They are VERY durable frames and lenses, easily and quickly changeable. Their dark amber polarized lens has been great for fishing. Now I wish they made their other colors of lenses in polarized...

To me the best part was buying them at Sports Authority. For $15 i got their "warranty" dealio, basically if for any reason anything happens, they replace them. And I can buy another $15 warranty in a year and extend it. I'm hard on glasses, so that's gold to me!

I've had a pair of costas and oceanwaves in the past and liked them both, I just picked up the new costas this year with the new 580 lenses and the contrast you see through them is amazing, i haven't tested them on the water yet since there is still ice but i think they are going to be as good as it gets looking into the water. The interchangeable lenses on the H3O's would be nice though.

addict and I do bascially the same thing with two different pairs of Costas, one blue for daytime and one green for low light. I like having two pairs much better than switching lenses all the time. The only difference is that I prefer the Costa Harpoons over the Fathoms. I have a pair of Fathoms and they are nice but the Harpoons have metal hinges and just seem to fit my head better.

I personally have a pair of Smith Optics. Their selection seems to be a little bit more stylish (wow that sounded bad) than some of the other brands out there, and mine have interchangeable polarized lenses. The polarization is very good, but the hands down best polarized glasses on the market, IMO, are Ocean Waves with the backwater green lens.

I also wear the H3O's and no problems yet. I wouldn't hesitate to get a 2nd pair.

I bought some Smiths last year and am not very happy with them, seems like they scratch way too easy for being glass lenses. This time I bought some cheap shades for $20 and I like them just as well.

Try The Sportsmans Guide! I bought an $80 pair of H3Optix for less than $40 shipped. They are called thunderbolts! I bought the amber, but they come in black as well!

Oakley half jackets with the blue polarized lenses, they work well for cloudy weather, as long as there is some light. I dont use them at/after dark, just do a good fig 8 at the end and watch when you sweep up and out, it has worked for me so far,

I have problems losing and breaking sunglasses, so i got a slower boat and that cut down significantly on the loss of sunglasses. Either way i still get the cheapies because they work almost as well and cost 1/8 the price of the really good ones, and last just as long for me.

Here is a little information for choosing polar sun glasses:
- If you are looking for the best possible polarization and clairity be sure to buy a frame with a glass polar lens.
- If you want protectection from flying objects (rock chips) and don't mind sacraficing a bit of polarization then look at polycarbonate lenses. NOTE: The polar film can delaminate after time.
- Also if you want an added feature look at a photochromatic lens. This will change tint from light to dark. Durring the morning and evenings when it is darker the lens will have higher visible light trasmition. Durring mid-day lower light trasmition.

I personally like the Smith Optics line of fishing eyewear.

Good Luck!

I'll put in my vote for the H30's... the interchangeable lenses are great for changing light conditions and they are very lightweight and comfortable to wear. Also, if you do happen to break the frames they will replace them at no cost due to the lifetime warranty. I broke a pair of frames last year and they had the new ones in the mailbox the next day... great customer service!

I've had them for two years and have never had them fall out... those lenses snap in pretty tight.

I'll have to be the first to say buy some OAKLEYS. Different color lenses are available too. I love the glasses I have and the black polarized lenses are great. The Oakley's are also great for other outdoor activites like golfing etc...

H30's all the way. I did have a problem after a year with the lenses sometimes popping out when I put them on my head. I called them up, they sent me a new frame no questions asked, then gave me a follow up phone call about 2 weeks later to see if things were working correctly! Awesome customer service. Plus I really do like my interchangeable lenses.

Anyone got any good suggestions for a guy like me who wear regular glasses at all times (I'm near-sighted)? I'd love to wear sunglasses to protect the eyes from the bright sun and glare, plus getting the advantage of polarized vision, but I don't really like the blurry vision if I remove my glasses...

I have a set of Natives HardTops with the interchangeable lenses and they are very nice. They come with amber, blue mirror, yellow, orange and clear lenses. I use them for fishing as well as hunting. They also come with interchangeable supports with a built in lanyard so they do not fly off your head. I would buy them again because they are comfortable and priced reasonably.

I'm surprised that nobody has suggested the "Magic Sunglasses". They'd probably make even a scrawny fish look really good.
