I have some exciting news for all the muskie fishermen in the state. The Upper Great Plains chapter of Muskies Inc. is putting on the 1st ever Iowa Muskie Team Trail. The tournament trail will be open to everyone, muskies inc. members and non-members. It will consist of four 1 day tournaments on 4 different bodies of water throughout the state. The UGP chapter annually has two tournaments in the Iowa Greats Lake region, but we feel there is an opportunity and a demand to utilize different muskie fisheries across the state. The muskie fishing community has grown over the last several years and there are avid anglers throughout Iowa. Here is a unique opportunity to fish for Iowa's top fish in a fun and competitive way. The trail will begin on May 3rd at Pleasant Creek, the DNR allows 1 boat per 10 acres during fishing tournaments, so the field will be limited to 40 boats on Pleasant Creek, however the remaining 3 tournaments will have a field limit of 50 teams. The second tournament will be held May 31st on Clear Lake. The third tournament is June 21st on 3 Mile Lake and the fourth and final tournament will be held on West and East Okoboji Lake on October 4th. So as you can see we have all 4 corners of the state covered. I have alot more details about registering and the rules for the tournaments but to keep this message limited, I ask that you go to our chapter’s website at www.muskieclub.com to view the tournament rules and registration form. Once on the website click on the muskie icon that says Events. Scroll down and you will see the section for the Iowa Muskie Team Trail. Click on the forms to open and view. Please check out the tournament forms and let me know what you think. I hope the muskie community is as excited about this opportunity as our chapter is. Be sure to let you muskie buddies know about this exciting opportunity as well.

Our club has been working on this trail over this past winter and it should be a fun chance for muskie fisherman to get out and fish in Iowa's top musky lakes and compete against each other on a small scale basis. A few of these tournaments are before minnesota and wisconsin seasons open so it gives those people a chance to start the season early without driving real far away. Our lakes have really came on the past few years and are producing some very nice fish.We do have limits on field size so sign up early.

I thought about fishing Muskie Fest this year. Should be a wild weekend in October up on Okoboji fishing Muskie Fest on the 3rd, staying up late celebrating my defeat, then fishing Iowa musky trail on the 4th. The Iowa musky trail sounds like it's going to be a good time. Good job on the schedule dates.

Hey Doonan,
Rocket is referring to the IDSO Fest tournament the UGP chapter holds annually on the first Saturday of October. It is named in the honor of former UGP chapter member Don Idso. Some people refer to the tournament as the October Fest or Muskie Fest tournament. This year it will be held on Saturday Oct. 3rd on the Okoboji's. The day before the final Team Tournament also held on the Okoboji's. We fiqured this would give folks a chance to fish both tournaments on the same weekend.
I am also glad to see you guys like the schedule dates. Hopefully the muskies like the dates as well!

Sounds good Shawn, I talked to my brother last night and he's on board. Nothing like fishing with a family member, should be fun.

Props to the UGP boys! This is a great sounding event....just wish I could fish it but will be camping and in Canada on 2 of those weekends already. I will try and suffer through on Wabigoon while y'all are fishing 'back home'.

Hey Guys, just wanted to get a reminder out there that the 1st of 4 IA Musky Team Tournaments is just around the corner. The Pleasant Creek tournament is Sunday May 3rd. Entry fee is $100.00 per team per tournament. Tournament entry forms must be post marked 10 days prior to each tournament event so you have till next Thursday, April 23rd to get them in the mail and save $20. However you can also register the morning of the tourney. Entry fee is $120.00 for tournament entry forms turned in the day of the tournament. Remember you can get your registration form and rules on our chapter website under the events page at www.muskieclub.com I also posted a picture of the official tournament bump boards we will be using and selling the morning of the tournament on the website as well. Be sure to check out the photo, the boards turned out awesome and they will only cost $25. Unbelievable, most boards out their are $50. Its a great deal. We also have all the trophies for the tournaments ordered. The Team of the Year trophies are 4 ft. tall. Their Sweet!!! So get the word out and remind your buddies to sign up. We can't wait to get the event started. So far we have 12 teams registered for the PC tournament and we can have up to 40, so their is plenty of room left. I can't wait to see you there.

Thanks

I'm mostly glad for the idea here, and to hope that it helps promote healthy Musky fishing in Iowa. But Three Mile Lake is only 810 acres. Do you really hope to get 40 boats on the water there for that tournament???? Doesn’t that seem like a bit much for that lake to handle on several levels?

I agree with shaley 3 mile does fish bigger than it is, plus 40 boats will seem samll compared bass tournaments I've fished on the lake. I've fished bass tournments on 3 mile with over 60 boats before. It will be fine, I think it would be great if we could get 40 to 50 boats per tournament! Just that many more musky anglers to get together and meet.

50 boats on 810 acres don't seem as packed as 40 on Pleasant Creek (410 acres).

Just reminding you guys if you want to save $20 on your entry fee get them in the mail no later then this Friday for the May 3rd Musky tournament on Pleasant Creek. You can get the registration forms on our chapter website. I also put up 3 example photos of what we are looking for on our bump board release photos on the website. Everything is spelled out in the rules for what we are looking for. You can get all this info at www.muskyclub under the events page.

I also posted photos from this years awards banquet and gillnetting on the IGL's. They are under the photos page. Enjoy the picts. and remember to get those registration forms in tomorrow. We have pleny of spots available so anglers can register the day of the tournament, but it will cost $120 instead of $100.

Thanks

We have 12 teams signed up so far and I know of at least one boat that is going to wait to the day of the tournament to sign up. So that will make at least 14 teams which would make the 1st place prize $560. Not bad for 9 hrs. of fishing!!! The more teams we can get to sign up that morning the better. We have plenty of spots remaining, we can have a 40 boat field.

Its getting close, I can't wait!!!

No fish caught - I had several close calls - had a fish "bump" the bait near the boat but no hooks with an hour left in the tourney - it was like watching $600 swim away ....anyway it was a fun event, thank you Upper Great Lakes Chapter

I think every boat seen at least 1 with most boast seeing 3 - 4. Lot of lookers but no takers. I think if this tourny would have been one week later we would have seen much better results. But that's the way it goes this time of year. We raised 4 fish with 1 being really hot. He hit the bait out at the end of the cast and was right on it all the way back in. I had him going around on the "8" for quite a while but he would not bite again. That was around 1:00 so that could have been the $600 swimming away. Great tourny and hope to see everyone + a few more at Clear Lake.
