I noticed guy are charging extra money to use paypal! Why is this? Is there a charge on the receiving end or what? It just seems so easy and you receive your money right away, I thought they should knock money off for the conveniance...LOL I'm just curious about this, thats all!

You get charged an extra 2% or 5%, depending on if you upgrade (an upgrade reduces extra fee to 2%), to use PayPal's service.

technically its against paypal's terms of service yet many people still charge you to pay them via it... what's worst is now ebay has gone to exclusively paypal payments! Thats a double whammy on their outrageous fees!

personally, always thought it was poor taste to charge extra for paypal. You don't want to pay the fees...then you can wait for a check/MO

People and business are going to pass their expenses onto their consumers. Simple as that.

I can see specifically charging extra if it is a big ticket item. Adding $1 for a $20 bait doesn't seem like it is worth it to me. Seems petty. If you want the extra dollar then charge $21 for the lure.
Passing on expenses to the customer is what you do in a business not as a casual fisherman selling a used item on a website to other casual fishermen. MO

charging a fee for paypal is silly in my opinion.

Is $2 or $3 gonna change your life?

i think it speaks to how people view selling used stuff.

many times (though not every time) the same person who charges "extra" for PayPal is also charging more for the baits. it looks like they're trying to squeeze every dollar out of selling a bait they don't even want anymore. it cracks me up when someone is selling a "new never used" lure for $2 less than the cost of brand new, and then wants to charge shipping and PayPal fees. ummm, i can order it online with free shipping and pay less. and then they wonder why it doesn't sell until they lower the price...

personally, stuff that i want to sell is stuff i don't use anymore. at that point it's worthless to me so whatever i get for it is good. therefore i price things to sell fast, and they always do. i don't tack on fees for using PayPal because the convenience of using it is the seller's, not the buyers. i'd rather have the surety of immediate payment and i'm happy to get it done quickly.

The eBay/PayPal fees combined are almost up to 20% of the final selling price on an item. For many (myself included) they cannot afford to sell an item just above the COGS and then also pay the auction fees. Personally the fee structure they have now is getting ridiculous and is actually pushing a lot of sellers out of the eBay/auction market, myself included. Its simple math, once you sell a “widget” for your cost or below it is no longer a viable option to do business in that particular business model…

With that said, outside of eBay for my websites I pay all PayPal fees and actually pay a good chunk of the shipping in most cases too. All depends on who you are and what your purpose/model is.

Selling your old used junk is another story. For that I am just happy to get some $$$ for my old stuff others find useful enough to buy from me

PS-We all pay for these fees at the Wal-Marts and Targets of the world. WE just don't know it. Funny thing is, PayPal is now the worlds largest credit card processor and when you pay at a Target your CC is most likely being processed over the internet through PayPal... I may not like those eBay boys but man did they do it right!

Lambeau, Well said! I thought that was the purpose of the buy and sell! Alot of these guys are selling things that you can buy brand new for the same or even less! That dollar bill can make a man do crazy things I guess! But then again, you don't have to buy it from them either!

So, James, you're saying you make a substantial amount more if we buy your products from your website vs. "buy it now" on ebay? I think if that's the case, you should really make that known here. I for one will deal directly with you instead of ebay if it will help put an extra potato on your dinner table!

It clearly states in PayPal's user agreement that a seller cannot charge extra for accepting PayPal as payment method. Here is a link to PayPal's user agreement.

I also noticed that ebay is only handling paypal...BUT if you contact seller and ask to send a MO, or check they usually say YES. And Yes, I can wait for shipping.
If your feedback is 100%, seller will accept your bid. These days, with the economy the way it is, I believe most sellers will say yes to your check. Drawback is you will wait till check clears for shipping...Thats OK!

For MO or Cashiers checks most will ship ASAP once they get it. I figure not too many guys are willing to do federal time to buy a lure with a bogus USPS Money Order

I keep hearing about how ebay has gone exclusively paypal and I just don't see it. I am still able to pay for items via money order and am able to bid on items without having a paypal account. I do see some auctions listed as "paypal account required" but that seems to be by sellers choice. I will say I havent listed anything since this change so maybe they tell sellers they have to take paypal but dont enforce it?

So if ebay has gone to only paypal payment why arent all auctions "paypal account required"?

I think it’s time for them to have a competitor that will get them back to reality, IMO big Business usually gets greedy.

keep in mind that eBay has changed radically from what it was at first.

initially it was full of people selling collectibles or second-hand items, sort of a nation-wide garage sale.

now it is mostly people running businesses using eBay as their online storefront...and it's extremely profitable if you know how to get items cheaply at wholesale or less (overseas, overstock, etc.) and re-sell them. it's understandable that eBay would look at what's going on and expect to get a bigger slice of the massive profits that many people are making using their website. essentially, it's "rent" for the businesses using the site.

it's not better or worse, just different now.

all of which is a big part of why we insist that our buy/sell/trade forum is primarly second-hand equipment or the occasional basement-built baits...MuskieFirst doesn't charge for the service and doesn't want it to become a storefront.

Ah, the good ole days of ebay, when you didnt have to search through page after page of pink bordered pics showing China made knock offs. Back when you could actually find GOOD deals on quality used equipment.

Is that what we get in the technology age, only need to look back 5-6 years for the "Good ol' days"??

ive tried to list and purchase since the change and they wont let me do anything.and i do have 100% feedback. also if you contact the seller about a money order, ebay watches that also and will send you a warning . then they say they will ban you if y ou persist. how much they enforce that stuff, i dont know. i liked it for selling stuff i dont use but now its clutter again...i wish they had a competitor. some have tried{bidville} and failed.

It's like anything for sale... "let the buyer beware" I get a kick out of the guys who get swept up in the bidding and end up paying more than if they bought it off cabelas or bass pro!

Hi Guys,
I too am totally sick of wading through all the Ebay listings for crap in bulk that aren't even musky lures, the stuff bordered in pink and the other cheap Saltwater lures that you can buy 6 at a time. Who buys this crap?
SO, I took the time to create an advanced search that eliminates those sellers.

Here it is, in a mile long URL- But if you save this as a favorite you'll always get a fresh and clean Ebay search.
http://sporting-goods.shop.ebay.com/items/Fishing__musk_W0QQLHQ5fSp...

I still buy occasionally from Ebay if the deal's good and it's something I need, but I'm done selling my used lures on Ebay, fees are too high for something under $10. So I'm very thankful for the buy/sell forum on here.

Thanks Whit65. I had done the same, but yours even looks a little "cleaner" than what I came up with. I appreciate the link.

Paypal fees have gotten a bit rediculous... It is a super convenient, and pretty safe way to pay, but the fees suck. I can see both sides. As a buyer, if I want something now, I don't have a problem paying a little extra... As a seller, which I am most of the time... It isn't a big deal on one or two baits, but if your selling numbers, next thing you know, you are out $20.

As for what YOU are selling... Some people are selling stuff they don't want or need, some people are selling crap... However, some people are selling hard to find baits, or collectables. If that is the case, what is an extra 2-5% to get something you really want...

It all depends on where you are coming from.

My rule of thumb for buying for me is to look at the lure and determine what I think it is worth (plus shipping). I then back out the cost of S/H the buyer wants and the amount left is what I put in as my bid amount for the item(s). Then I never overbid for what I want and also I take into account the S/H the buyer wants for the item. That will help with your calculations for the sellers who want to charge $15.99 for S/H.

So a nice 10" Suick I would pay $10 with a listed $4 S/H on it would make my max bid for it to be $6 or $6.01 to trick out other buyers Then if I win I got the Suick for $10 or less delivered to my front door...

No problem on the link. My guess is that these folks who mass sell on ebay and do the hot pink borders, etc will have several names going, and that they are wise to what we are doing here. That being the case, I'm sure that before long pink borders or "sets of 6" crappy 5" saltwater lures will show back up in these search results and the seller exclusions will have to be updated, but at least it makes it somewhat easier to search for now.
I agree with Tacklebooty's technique for determining what max price to pay. I see items on there all the time that I won't bid on because the shipping is too high. It's easy to watch folks overbid for something that they could get cheaper from an online retailer like R&H or Musky Tackle Online.
I will say this, though. Ebay is safer and less hassle than Craigslist for certain. Craig's is free still, but I tried to sell a laptop on there locally and all I got was about 12 different scam offers from Africa and the Ukraine. Not one actual interest from a local buyer. Haven't had this problem with fishing gear or furniture, but some things trigger alot of scumbags and i guess computers are one of those things. I wouldn't list electronics on Craigslist again for that reason. What that's got to do with Musky fishing though, I admit I have no idea. I need some more coffee. Wait, what I really need is for that new R&H catalog to come out two months early!
