| Looking for a new tinsel/flashaboo brand for '09 for double 10s to try. I would like to stay away from the usual (Musky Mahem) for no other reason than liking to do something just a little different from the norm. What are your preferences in double 10s from a brand perspective, and why?

Location: SW MI | Try making your own. I made up several of my own this year and I think they came out pretty good. The initial start up can be a bit pricey but in the end it saves you a little money and it gives you something to do over the winter. |

I give mine away to friends for beer money 
Try Dick Moore or Rollie and Helens for components - buy one or 100, no set limit.
Marabou will cost less and easier to tie IMO...but Flash is fun as well.

| 98% of the ones I throw and catch fish on are made by Gerry Carroll from Pewaukee, WI...he will do whatever you want for colors/blades etc..most of mine are flashabou....his prices can't be beat for the most part and great quality....
He goes the extra mile to make them exactly the way you want...
Fish to 52.75" have chowed them down...

He does mine also. He's local ,I drive right over ,he makes whatever I want and much cheaper than MM. Raise that to fish to 53 have chowed them down. |

Another vote for Gerry. Great baits and great service. He answered a bunch of questions when I told him I wanted to start making my own for fun. I'm also really impressed with the Spanky Baits. High quality components, .072 wire = built like an M1 Abrams, KILLER color combos, and Dan can make pretty much anything you want color-wise and weight wise. http://www.spankybaits.com |

I always wonder how bait shops are even in business selling DC's for $26 when you can simply go to this site and find one for $15 or less

Location: Land of the Musky | I have a lot of guys buy my double #10s and #13s in bulk and cut them up and remake them.
About the comment on "I always wonder how bait shops are even in business selling DC's for $26 when you can simply go to this site and find one for $15 or less" I have a hard time selling mine for $10 right now. I think these types of lures are so easy to make and the terminal tackle cost about $8 or so (if you are not buying in bulk) and you can make your own for a real decent price. Good way to spend your winter time or during your ice fishing trips.

Location: Palm Coast, FL | I tried some fireballs from Spanky Baits and these things are built like a tank! Oh yah...they won a tournament for me also!
FYI...I do not get any discount or specials from Spanky Baits and pay just as much as anyone else does. I ordered about $400 worth of their baits. The components on Dan's baits are second to none...all high quality and more durable than any other on the market.

Saves some $, gets you exactly what you want plus a little exrtra satisfaction when a big girl eats it. That said, there is a reason why the majority of guys are throwing a specific brand, they make a geat bait. If you want to be "different" don't throw double 10's at all. |

| I like glittertails. The blade assemblies and skirt assemblies are sold separately. They are connected by a split ring. That way you can change blade and skirt combos. It also prevents the bait from being bent at a 90 degree angle when a fish tbones it. |

Location: north central wisconsin | Check out the GP Thumper AC-10 some time too. Greg makes a very unique lure that is half flashabou(front) and half hair(back). The blades on the AC-10 create the signature 'vacuum' effect on all of the flashabou, and part of the hair making for a very unique profile. We have been doing very well on them with several 50+"ers on them in the past 3 seasons, and 53" the biggest. That said, he'll make all flash, all hair, or even silicon. We've also done quite well on his AC-10 mini chasers, which are a nice compact package. He also makes one fine spinnerbait. Greg will make any color you desire. Also, his flashabou doesn't tangle, which is a real plus. I'll try to post some pics later. Please drop me an email, and I'll get you in touch with Greg.

There is a cost involved in packaging, advertising, etc. and that is why people who make them themselves can sell them cheaper. That and that I bet the majority of them don't pay any tax on them be it sales tax, income tax, or more importantly, the 10% DJ tax that goes back towards our lakes and fisheries. |

| Careful analysis of many different types and brands have led me to conclude a few things:
1. Gerry's Girls have a permanent place in my arsenal.
2. If every Gerry's Girl in the world suddenly vanished, when I was done crying about having to replace all those lures I'd buy a whole pile of Spanky Baits.
3. Sometimes I still want marabou. In that case, I'd go with Dinnerbells.

| it was interesting watching the pool demo at Chicago. Mike Hulbert threw d-10s from Llungen (rubber), Shumway (marabou), and Spanky (flashabou) back-to-back-to-back.
from the side/above in the clear water it was extremely obvious the differences between the types of material.
rubber: hangs and wiggles
marabou: flows and poofs
flashabou: balls up behind blades
it confirmed my thought that there's a time and place for each type of material, and a good idea to have some of each on hand since they present a different look and feel in the water. maybe when a fish is following one, a switch to a different skirt material might be enough to trigger a strike?
i've taken to building my own, and this year i've been modeling the Mepp's and Glittertails approach of connecting the blade section to the skirt/hooks section with a split ring. for every 10 baits i make i get 100 possible blade/skirt combos! it's very interesting to see how different the same skirt looks when paired with different colored blades...
