Editor's Note: In answer to a comment by Mr. Hulbert: Mike H, I agree, a bump board is the cats *** but as far as loosing the slime coat, I bet you have to wash your bumpboard off like I do after every use. In both cases there is some slime lost. The DNR measures fish on a bumpboard and the boards get ton of slime on them. They tell me that fish make new slime all the time to protect themselves. Bumpboard measuring is really nice if your are into making sure your catch is exactly right, but a straight stick or flat ruler used properly with the fish layed down next to it can be dead on accurate. Fish measured vertical in anyway can not only hurt the fish by stressing the jaw and backbone but just like using a sewing ruler its not dead on accurate. So its only my opinion...but a fished layed down gently for a couple of seconds to get a quality measurement is fine. Time out of the water is the most critial element. One should be able to take a couple pics and measure in 10 seconds or less. Jason Smith

Posts: 4266 | You should have had Jason hold it, it would have been a photo to examine for world record status. But then again, the tail might have come in contact with the carpeting.
