Posts: 148 Location: Excelsior, MN | Have 100++ lures but find myself throwing maybe 10-15 different in a day. Is this typical or the exception???? Bring on board what you throw or the entire arsenal?

Posts: 1916 Location: Greenfield, WI | A couple of years ago I took out a character who brought two large tackle boxes of baits plus two 5 gallon buckets lined with baits. He threw and rotated through the same 6 baits all day! I have made a practice of monitoring how many baits are thrown, and have seen it typically ranging from 3-10 per day. I, myself, have been averaging 4-6 per day. I have gotten down to being able to get everything that I expect to need, with additional options, to a small two sided Plano tacklebox when necessary.

Posts: 785 | I probably throw no more than 15 different lures in a day (tough day), usually less than 10. Much of that is changing colors on the same lure type as the conditions change. Honestly I have a lot of really good baits that will likely never again see the light of day.

Posts: 550 Location: So. Illinois | Guilty as charged. No matter how hard I try to limit the number of baits I take out, I always end up putting back in all my favorites and all the ones that I eventually "plan" to throw. I always have on hand a number of new baits that I have never thrown and I end up forgetting about them. On a given day, I may cycle through 8 - 12 baits, changing often just to keep things interesting. I typically have 3-4 rods at hand with a selection of baits attached. The last time I was out, I threw the following baits in this order. Changed baits as stucture and conditions dictated: Weighted Squirrley Burt Double Cow Girl Krusher (Lost a mid 30") Mepps Musky Marabou modified with an action plastic magnum grub Northland Spinnerbait (Caught a 38") Lunch Break (Trolling) Rapala Super Shad Rap (Trolled up a 47.25") Terminator T-3 (Trolling) 10" Jointed Believer (Trolling) DC-10 SS-Shad 12" Suick Super Stalker 10" Jake Swirly Curly Sue J Edited by AFChief 10/28/2008 1:26 PM

Posts: 371 Location: Dixon, IL | I have lot muskies lures but I left it at home! I pick good color lures that I plan to fish on that lake. Few lures like bucktails, grandma and crankbait in spring. Almost everything from top to bottom from late spring to fall. Jerkbaits, crankbaits, and few grandma in late fall. More lures when I am on boat. One large tacklebox with a few lures when I am on shore.

Posts: 8824 | If you asked me a few years ago how many lures I use in a day, I'd have said 10-20. During the last few seasons, especially this year, I'd say 5 or less on average, often as few as one. If I get up over 5, that means it was a tough day. I bring what I can carry in one trip, i.e. one tackle bag. Might have 80 lures in it if you count bucktails and spinnerbaits, but that's only because I'm carrying the bag anyway. Might as well fill it up. Edited by esoxaddict 10/28/2008 10:30 AM

Posts: 1168 | Maybe 5....but I carry everything along in my boat simply to have the option to go to something I own. I hate the feeling of "Gee, I wish I would have _________ along."

Posts: 431 | I bet a lot of people are in the same boat on this one. We all want those days where we only throw one or two lures. But, I hate the feeling I get when I don't have something that I want to use. So, I bring everything I can. That doesn't mean I am undisciplined and constantly change lures. Rather, I use the bait that I think gives me the best chance of success under the circumstances. Also, part of the fun for me is collecting baits.

No reason to throw more than 3 lures in a day. Usually it consist of 1 or 2, throwing 3 different lures in a day of fishing usually means NOTHING is moving. People change their lures way way way to much.

Posts: 1460 Location: Kronenwetter, WI | 10-15 for me. I've been fighting hard to be able to bring my whole collection with me. My rod locker is filled with plano boxes as are both front storage compartments of my 619. The plano boxes are way too over loaded some with big tangled messes of hooks. I really should hang them all up someplace and then choose a selection to take with me each time I go out. Maybe that way I could actually use the storage for rods, lunches, clothes, etc....I need to make the leap and leave the collection at home, but I keep thinking....I might NEED that bait!!!

Posts: 1270 | Every year a group of 10 or 12 of us go to Canada on a week long musky trip. Every year on the last night I ask the guys how many different lures they REALLY threw during the week. When I say really threw I don't mean all the new lures they bought and threw a couple times to see how they worked but lures that they kept on and used for a period of time. The general consecous is 4 to 6 lures for the entire week! I would say that I am right in there with that number as well. But that doesn't stop me from bringing 2 Lakewood Monster boxes filled with hard baits and 4 or 5 Plano 3700's full of bucktails along for the ride! But I do also use the Monster boxes as my rear deck so I have an excuse, at least that's the story I'm sticking to!

I disagree with no reason to throw more than 3 lures in a day....yes there are days you can find what triggers the fish within say 3 lure choices..but there are many days you have to experiment...at least I feel if you want to adapt to the fishes mood/location most times 3 won't do it...unless you are happy catching 1 fish per day...this year, just as an example and not to "toot my own horn", there has been a fish in the net for every 3.6 hours the boat has been on the water..over 150 fish..and we didn't do that by only throwing 3 lures...this past weekend I only threw 3...but they were my confidence lures those days...some days fish will start out wanting one thing, switch to something else, then again and again...fish move each day, and also the strike zone changes and what they will react to and strike....3 won't do it most days. triggering strikes at many different depths and speeds takes more than 3 lures most times...imo.

though I will add...the number I do throw and take on trips keeps getting smaller and smaller...putting any bait in the right spot is just as important as what bait it is...some days I will throw 3, some days 15

Posts: 2427 Location: Ft. Wayne Indiana | Somedays only 1 lure is required. Somedays fish will be going on two or three different lures. Sometimes they won't be going at all and folks like to switch every 15-30 minutes. I would suggest bringing a small amount of "different" lures, but stocking up on all different variations of the same lure. I can normally get by with about 10 lures in my boat, but I have about 5,000 different sizes, colors, etc... of the same style of bait.

Posts: 4080 Location: Elko - Lake Vermilion | Some days 3-5 lures are all that I'll use, and some days it's as many as 10 different ones. Let the fish tell you what they want, if thats possible......Certain times of the year I'll just use certain lures that have a history of of moving and catching fish. Jerome

Posts: 550 Location: So. Illinois | Mike H., that is one heck of a lure collection. I have the same mind-set. I have lures that I really like and I collect all the different color combinations and manufacturing combinations that catch my interest (size, jointed vs straight, weighted vs unweightd, then they go and start making them in a squirrley model). I laugh at myself when I decide to throw (as an example) a believer, then get stuck trying to pick between, 8 or 10", jointed or straight, what color or do I go with a super believer with the soft plastic tail??? I used to bring way to much and found myself changing often. In doing that, no only am I missing out on casts which puts you behind in the numbers game, but it screws with you mind that you should be throwing any bait but the one you have on. Bringing fewer makes you concentrate more on what you are doing. But... one time out, I had a handful of lures and my cousin dug deep in his box and pulled out a lure that I did not have and he hasn't thrown in years, and as luck would have it, it was the ticket. He ended up putting 3 fish in the boat to my one. The one I caught came on a glide bait. I just made a bomb cast when he hooked up, I was burning it in as fast as I could to get the net when it got hit. You talk about screwing with your mind, I spent the next hours burning gliders.

I once took 5 lures on a League outing and ended up catching the only fish and winning $50.00. You can sometimes get by with very few baits, and I normally use 10 or less. On LOTW earlier this year I stuck with 3 or 4 lures for an entire day and caught 4 fish, but we pretty much had the Muskies dialed in from the previous day.

Posts: 145 | I max out at 5-6 usually thowing a bucktail and a 9" suick it depends on structure and depth for me and of course water clarity. I have about 40 lures (not bad for 1 year in) but I have pretty much tried to stick to my guns when it comes to lures. If they are not in the water they can't catch fish so I try to refrain from changing.

Posts: 145 | Don't get me wrong about buying baits I have some serious wish lists going on at about 3 sites thats all I am asking santa for Krushers, mantas, weagles, they are all in there and come spring I will be throwing them I will have to rearrange my lure wallets to get them all in and eliminate the ones I don't use at all. Over time I am sure I will have a massive collection of lures that I just can't live with out.... which leads me back to the insurance post.... gotta call my agent.

Posts: 724 Location: Southern W.Va. | I probably throw about 6 to 10 lures on a average day but probably carry 80 to 100 lures on a trip. On a long trip , like to Minn. or Wisc. ,1000 miles for me, I don't know what the conditions will be like or if we will be fishing different lakes (clear vs. stained), so many lures can save the day. Here at home I still carry about 50 to 60 lures , not counting bucktails which may be as many as 50 in itself.A quick rain storm can change things in a heartbeat as far as color and action. Posts: 256 Location: Janesville | On most day I throw 8-10 different lures. If I find a lure they are moveing good on I will stay wiyh that lure. I do throw the same lure alot and just change colors. some times it is all about the color that day. I do have a basement full of lures . The last time I counted was over 2,500 lure about 2 yrs ago. I always bring over 200 lures on the boat with always more in the truck. Musky fishing is a fever and once you catch it you are a musky freak forever.
