Posts: 2323 Location: Stevens Point, WI | Day Two of the Rhinelander Toyota Hodag Muskie Challenge dawned with more of a fall feeling and a brisk take-off temperature of 36 degrees. After a Day 1 fish total record for the RTHMC, fishing didn't seem to slow too much with Team Mark Gillich and Justin Gaiche popping a 39.50 in the first half hour on Boom Lake. A little later in the morning Day 1 leaders Mike Marquardt and Shane Spencer stuck their third fish of the tournament with a 42.50 to seal the deal on first place and a check for $20,000. Marquardt and Spencer finished the tournament with three fish measuring 42.50, 42.50, and a 41.50. Holding down third place after Day 1, locals Bill Donner and Jeff Piazza managed a quick double between 12 o'clock and 12:30 yesterday, they were able to capitalize on Day 2 with a mid thirty inch fish to lock up second place and a check for $5,000. The largest muskie went to Josh Wood of Mosinee, he will be receiving a free replica from Fittante Taxidermy of his 45 1/2. Posts: 512 Location: Appleton | Congrats to all the people that caught fish during this event. Is there any breakdown as to which lakes caught most of the fish? Sounds like the northwoods was pretty productive.

Posts: 32951 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Pelican was tough wiith only a couple fish, and the rest of the lake groups had the numbers distributed pretty evenly.

Posts: 2323 Location: Stevens Point, WI | Team Rhino - 9/22/2008 8:10 AM Is there any breakdown as to which lakes caught most of the fish? As Sworrall stated, all lake groups except Pelican produced pretty even numbers of fish. There was not a standout lake this year, but more or less the entire lake selections.

Posts: 968 Location: N.FIB | how many fish were caught on sun, pelican had zero, just wondering how the other lakes combined did.east winds on sunday shut down pelican, raised one nice fish about 10 mins before the tourny ended, saw alot on sat,had one hit a big glider, not sure if it was a big fish but the lure came back tangled with the leader after the hit.no fish caught for us,very frustrating after sat with all the follows and none hooked, but at least I got a new hat.

Posts: 714 Location: Rhinelander, WI | Great job everyone, it awesome to have people in “The Family” do so great in this tourney. Current or former Rhinelander Musky league members in 7 of the top 10 teams, I also want to give a MAJOR shout out to Oneida Esox(John Stellflue), I think after just one year helping as a judge boat on Pelican last year, he did a great job in the head role organizing this tourney with an entirely new staff and minimal help from the people that ran it the last 20 years. Trial by fire for him, but as an angler I didn’t notice anything different other than the few rules changes that made it more angler friendly. Great job, really looking forward to 2009. It’s going to be our year Jason!!!!!! Nail A Pig! Mike

Posts: 13688 Location: minocqua, wi. | it's funny ... i was on the water for just a couple hours on friday and ran into mike and jason then i stopped at tournament headquarters to say hello to john and the first thing i did was to look at the boards and see where everyone was fishing ... i paid special attention to the league guys and was surprised to see jonesi/adler not on moens, then i saw jeff and bill and remembered how they dominated on julia his year, i looked for danny meyer who always does well ... then finally i remember being surprised to see marquardt and spencer up there because i knew shane had been having some pretty severe back problems ... before i left i called mike and left a voicemail at his house saying i saw him on the river board and hoped that he would win the tournament (mike did me a huge favor holding his boat so i could buy it this summer) ... congratulations to all the local musky fishermen from the area ... there are some good fishermen around these parts!!! | Thanks for the compliments guys. It was a lot of work, but very rewarding. I hope to see everyone back in 09. We are going to continue to enhance the event. We've already got some new exciting additions that we are working on. Now the work starts for next year! John Stellflue Tournament Director Rhinelander Toyota Hodag Muskie Challenge

Posts: 27 | This was Jason's and my first Hodag Challenge also and we too will be back next year, and the year after, and the year after...... Not only did John and his staff run a great tournament but we got to meet some great people also. Thanks to all involved!

| Thank you thank you John for all your hard work!! It was not an easy task to take on but you did a great job. Thank you also to all for the congrats to Shane and Mike. Jonnysled, Mike did get your message and was very appreciative of you thinking of them. You are right, Shane's back is bad, but it is from all the hard work I make him do before he can go out fishing.....just kidding of course!! But WOW what a weekend that we will never forget!!! Congrats to everyone! | |||

Posts: 1916 Location: Greenfield, WI | I would like to concur with the praises to Oneida Esox and his staff for a job well done. There were few if any "hicups" that mattered, and we have been at all the previous Hodags. I especially liked the two rule changes allowing the rules meetings to be on Friday night rather than Saturday morning, and the pinching of the muskie tales for uniformity of measuring the fish. I have one suggestion for next year's Hodag. Being now that the rules meeting is Friday night, why not start fishing on Saturday morning at 7:00 AM like Sunday morning? If needed the tournament could close at 5:00 PM Saturday night if not 6:00 PM. It isn't as if anyone is going to be sleeping in! Edited by Steve Van Lieshout 9/24/2008 10:55 AM

| Hey Steve, lots of requests for a 7 am start time and I don't see any reason why we can't accomodate that. I will bring the request to the next meeting. Thanks for your support. John | |||

| Hi John, I may be wrong on this but I thought the DNR had something to do with the amount of fishing hours allowed in one day for tourneys? I know the Boom Lake tourney had to take a hour break at noon because I thought you were only allowed to fish ten hours?? This may have changed by now though but if still true, you would have to come in at 5:00 if started at 7:00. Just thought you might want to check this out. Have a good day. | |||

Posts: 27 | If I could vote I'd vote for the start time to stay at 8a.m. On our lake more fish were caught and it seemed like more were moving later on in the day once the water warmed up.

Posts: 1 | Hi John, I think the tourney was run great but one other thing I would like to see are trophies, at least for the top three places. Its a great honor and achievment to place or win in this tournament and you should recieve something to remember it by. Personally I'm glad there were no trophies this year because the three teams I love to give the most crap to kicked my butt. Great job Shane, Mike, Billy, Jeff, Eric, and Nehls. They used to give away jackets to the winners.

| Kierky, if we started at 7 we would have to be off the water at 5, that is true. DANNOM, trophies were talked about, but we just didn't have enough time to get them ordered. We will have them next year. Mike and Shane did indeed get jackets. They are being embroidered as we speak. The jackets were there and in the excitement of all of it I simply forgot to have Mike and Shane put them on! | |||
