Wanted to, but it filled up pretty quick. Called and emailed to try and get on the waiting list, but no answer.

It was a good time last year.

How do you start tournaments? Seems like this should be regulated is some way.

Looking forward to my first time fishing this event. Capt. Jolly has said a ton about how it's run and how much fun it is. This will be Sarah's first run as my partner. Trolling tourney is a good start for her, I'm sure she'll be reading girly mags while I'm watching the boards and running the boat.

I'm fishing it as well. I'm very interested to see how they run this one. I've never been to Green Bay in Oct so the weather should play a huge factor. Anyway, we're fishing out of a black Alumacraft good luck to all of you folks.

The BOTB tournament in Green Bay is tightly regulated by the WiDNR. Not only is the field of anglers limited to only 50 boats (and will probably never change, as far as I can tell), we must also have a prescribed ratio of judge boats to angler boats. In addition, the local biologist has asked us to have the anglers keep track of the amount of time it takes for judge boats to arrive on-scene once they are called. (He also rides in one of the judge boats during the tournament.) We did this last year as well, and I believe the average time was around 3 minutes. I will have to ask Jay to confirm this, but that's what I recall. I know last year there were many times that we saw anglers fighting fish and (as a judge) we were waiting for them to net the fish before approaching the boat all the way.

We take our commitment to the Green Bay fishery extremely seriously. This is not a tournament that is thrown together at the last minute--in fact we start planning for next year's tournament, pretty much at the closing ceremony of the previous year's event. And we make a substantial financial donation to the musky restocking program each year--last year our chapter donated $2500, and MI International matched this amount.

As to not being able to get in to the tournament, we are looking at ways to make it fair for people that haven't participated, but want to get in and fish it. It's difficult because many anglers ask to sign up for the next year's event at the time of this year's event. And with only 50 boats allowed, it doesn't take long for the field to fill. So the chapter is trying to decide on a fair way to allow new entries, but without alienating any of the current year's participants...perhaps an automatic option to fish if the team is in the top 'n' places, or something like that.

Needless to say we never dreamed how popular the event would become. I joined the chapter after the first event had taken place, and there was nowhere a full field. However thanks to all the hard work put into the first event, it just sort of "blew up" in popularity and the second event filled. Of course we are very pleased at the success, as everyone in our chapter works extremely hard to plan and run the event. But with the success of each year, it only gets more difficult. And we owe a special debt of gratitude to the Green Bay Yacht Club for hosting and supporting the entire chapter, the event AND the musky program--these folks have become "musky central" for the area, and we certainly could not support the program without their help.

Thanks for starting the thread on this event.

Sounds like a lottery of some type or point system could be used to make sure new faces can fish it each year.

i.e. after the field fills up, guys can still send applications in and acrue points which will give them a preferenec in the future, or some such thing.

Glad to see this tourney is being successful and very well run.

Due to some finagling of vacation time at work so I could make Operation Muskie in Aug., I was unsure if I could commit to fishing the tourney with a friend as I'd have to make up some time at work. Stayed home with dad for the week in Aug. so I was really glad I had the time off, though I knew I'd still have to work this weekend in October. Well, as it turns out, dad has amazed us all with his recovery, can move around alot more freely and has committed to fishing the tournament this weekend in my place. He really cannot cast, which seems to be ok in this situation, but I am excited for him to get out on his first big endeavor in a couple months. If I can't be there, at least my favorite lures will..hehehe. Wish he and all alot of luck and safety this weekend!!!

Jason,

What wonderful news, I sure hope he has a great time. I'm glad to see the prayers were answered.

I'll have some additional good news at the tournament as well. If you look for the big blue and white bath tub Tracker Targa on Sat. morning you may see a sucker (me) down on one knee with a ring in his hand...

You would think that on a body of water as big as GB, that they would allow more boats to participate. Is it because of the size and the number of judges available that they kept the numbers so low?
