i would also suggest taking 74 to 39 and north up to rockford. i live in the chicago area and there is alot of construction on the south end right now. also the interchange from 65 north to 80/94 west is under construction as well. it may be a little longer going 74 to 39 but it will be worth it.

What time of day? As long as it is an off hour you will be fine.

Ryann, no such thing as an off hour on the Kennedy. Go by air!!! like Karl says. otherwise plan at least 3 hours from Gary to Rockford

I would leave a day early and spend a day in Chicago...great city to visit especially in the summer...The lake front, food and such is really nice and worth a stop for sure...Ben

Guest has it right- I-74 to Bloomington IL- Hwy 51 north to I-39N to I-90W in Rockford to I-90/I-94W in Madison WI to Eau Claire then follow Hwy 53N through Duluth MN to Int'l Falls. Beep your horn between Lyndon Station WI & Mauston WI ~ mile marker # 72 (I might be awake!).

Have fun!

if you are going to come via chicago, take 294 out around the city to 290 west that will run you back into 90 west to rockford. or you can take 80 west to 355 north back to 90 west. those are your 2 best options around the city. i am on the ill/ind border right where 294 begins, and it takes me 2 hours from my door to get to rockford. i do think your best bet is to take the 74 to 39 north route though!

I live in Rockford and yes we have construction also. Depending on what time of day and also what day you come through you may experience up to a 45 minute delay in about a 6 mile stretch once you come off 39 and get on I90 until you reach the Wisconsin border. Try avoiding it on Fridays between 3pm and 7 pm.

I would come over on 74 to Bloomington/Normal and head up to Rockford on 39. There is a lot of traffic/construction around the Chicago area. Also you can pick me up in Normal and I will bring a ton of beer and laughs for trip. Let me know. I will get my stuff ready!!

move to Wisconsin

Don't do this, I can guarantee those guys will get tangle tongued trying to call you an FKB. It is much easier to call people an FIB and that automatically covers three states, so maybe move to one of them first for a short while, maybe Lake X.

All teasing aside M_M, I have driven this route a whole bunch of times over the years and finally have come to two choices. #1 If you are going to hit in daytime and are pulling a boat I would always do the 74-39 route talked about. It will be so much easier stress wise that it will be worth the extra hour or so it might take, particularly if you have kids or women with you. Going through Chicago can be hard on the nerves, and as indicated, you can get stuck in traffic, no, let me correct that, you will get stuck in traffic, and it may eat so much time you will be even with the longer route. Also some of the areas in Chicago that you drive are really tough tough areas, not so on the 74-39 route, it is kind of.......boring, just don't miss the turnoff to get on 39(did it once, but keep an eye on the compass, you won't waste but 10 miles or so).

But now, here is choice #2 and I have done this a bunch and still do it if timing is right. Go up 65, DO NOT GET ON 80 TO GO WEST TO BYPASS, and head straight into Shytown on the skyway, and run right up the guts of downtown Chicago, along side the loop, through the underpasses, etc. etc., bring your gun in case you break down, and then either take 94 up to Milwaukee(a little quicker way out of ugly is what I call it), then on up and over to Madtown, or take the 90 west route outta Dodge around Belvidere and through Rockford.

If I am just driving a vehicle, no trailered boat, I usually go through Chicago on the route mentioned, it's scenic, exciting and my kids are grown, but if I am pulling, I only go through if it is evening or I am on one side or the other of commuters, you do not want to hit the main commute up there pulling a boat, and I would describe that as 6:30 to 9:00 in am or 3:30 to 6:00 in pm(Chicago time, not KY time). If you would be getting up there after 7pm on a Frid nite or before 7:30 am on a Saturday morning you will save time going this way, usually an hour, at least. Do not hit the traffic going around Rockford up into Wi on a Friday
evening. It can be bad.

Good luck up in Canada. Bring us back a maple leaf, eh?

Let me add one thing to anybody going up this route, when you hit Indianapolis on 65 N, if you are going 74 west you will have to take the 465 so called bypass around the outside of the city to get on it quickest, but, if you are going to go through Chicago, go straight through downton Indy, traffic is better than the stupid bypass, and it is a nice scenic drive, and quicker than going around. And it is easy to pull a boat through downtown Indy. The only bad thing about Indy, is that I believe the traffic cops work on commission up there...

We've also taken I-65N out of Indy, and then take Rt. 24 West thru Gilman to El Paso, where you can pick up 39. Same distance as taking I-74, but mostly 2 lane roads with a few little towns and lower speeds (55). If you do take I-74, watch it as you cross over into Ill., big speed trap there where it goes down to 55. Have a safe trip, m

My buddy and i did the Chicago thing for years. We come from Baltimore and drive the 26 hours straight through to Eagle lake. Finally got smart and now we go up thru michigan. it takes a little longer but is a much nicer trip. We used to leave so we went though Chicago at 2 in the morning but it doesn't help most of the time because they do much more construction at night so you still get backed up and the 290/294 toll thing is a pain in the butt.

I haven't seen anyone post here about the new I-355 extension..............you avoid Chicago traffic............I don't know what I-65 is like when it meets I-80, but I know it's not bad on the Illinois side.
I would suggest I-80 to I-355 north to I-88, and I-88 west to I-39 north to Rockford. My friend Ryan took that route this past weekend when he came in for our golf outing.........from the Illinois/Indiana border to Mokena is 20 minutes, then from Mokena to the city limits of Minneapolis took him 6 hours and 40 minutes (stopping twice but traveling around 75-80 on the open road most of the way) via 80 to 355 to 88 to 39 to 90. He said the biggest tie up was in Rockford, which is down to 2 lanes, on 90 from 39 to the border..........

We go up North 3-4 times a year, and we take the I-88 route.............now that I-355 is in, there is no question that's the way to go from the South Side!

Sorry Muskihntr, BUT DO NOT take I-294 under any circumstances...........it's under construction!!!!!!!!!!!
Plus, if you take 80, you could stop in at Stoney Point for a walleye poor boy!

best way to bypass chicago would be to trade Favre to Minnesota ... if he lands in Chicago we won't get past them for at least two more years.

read my whole post jim, it says 80 to 355 is an option. yes 294 is under construction but ive been using it and it does move, sometimes slower than other times but it beats going via downtown pulling a rig. fistsixfeet 65 to the skyway is closed til fall dont misguide the guy! justin i live in the heart of all of this feel free to email me.
