ok boys here's your chance ... might as well put it out there for all to see and chastise me with. give me the tuff love i deserve ... the ranger was sold on saturday to a guy that i think is one of the most unique innovators we might see in the sport. jeff breidenbach (esoxfly) drove down the road with my center console ranger embarking on his move to st. clair and some of the most unique and creative flies and equipment i've ever seen. for him he gets into a big ranger for a good used price ... for me well ...

tomorrow i will hook up to a 1995 tuffy esox magnum powered by an '04 115 merc ... yes, i did say a tuffy powered by a merc

after shopping all the classifieds, boat dealers and options you could name i decided by just stopping to see the boat ... for the money, condition and fishing that i do, it was impossible to argue for another choice. this is "the" perfect musky fishing layout and value for 80% of what i do ...

i am turning over my ranger jacket to the guy i'm buying it from who bought himself a sweet 619 last year (he spends most of his time on eagle lake in ontario) and will become a tuffy-merc owner.

blast me ...

Wow Jon.....after reading all of your comments on the black motors the last couple of years.....I'm speechless.

It is pretty hard for me to be speechless in fact my wife thinks it is impossible.

SledCostas with a merc on the back of his Tuffy listening to Big 10 football....WOW

Well, a boat is a boat.

Enjoy the new ride, and to heck with anything but the bite, and the time on the water.

I agree with Steve, if it floats and gets you to and from your "spots" it's a good boat.

exactly ... starting to define things quite a bit differently these days and just glad to have found a nice boat that was cared for like this one. it's a '95 and looks like new ... definitely benefitting from a guy who takes care of his stuff ...

Haven't been on the boards too much lately, but John, I need to give you a little gig here...

Maybe when you lay that bump board down up in the bow to measure that fiddy, she won't do the triple lindy on you and get away!!!

Sorry dude, I had to!!

Nice boat 'sled.....I'd buy one in a heartbeat. It would be a similar sized drop for me too, but IMO it fits that waters we like to fish better than they 'ole white bathtub.

Enjoy!

You will love the mag....

For the waters you fish....I can't even believe you had the ranger that long

Plus....the mag is closer to the water so the fish won't hurt themselves when they flip off the bump board into the water...nice of you to think of the fish!!!

So what rig you and stud-muffin going to use on Eagle this year???

I'll bet that 115 2-banger won't give him any issues! That motor is a strong and reliable motor. Not to mention, that motor is surprisingly quiet. No earplugs needed for this one, that would be the EFI's that were loud.

Congrats on the new ride, Sled. So which is it? the 115 2+2? or the 115 EFI 4 stroke?

Whatever will we argue about now?! hehehe

Now, go get it slimed!

All in frame of reference my friend. My Suzi....now that is surprisingly quiet!

Nice boat Sled, I think those things are the ultimate small to medium size water musky rig.

Well that's a given. I would hope a 4stroke would be quieter that a 2-stroke. But you want quiet, try the Verado, that's the quietest motor out there.

I said the 115 carburetored motor that Sled got are surprisingly quiet for a 2-stroke. The EFI's on the other hand are the really loud ones. The ones that say EFI on the side of the motor, unlike what Sled has.

I must have missed the part where you said "for a two stroke" in your first statement, and not to be a naysayer, but actual testing doesn't agree with your Verado is the quietest statement at any of the RPM or Cruising speed.

Powerboat Reports has published test results comparing six different 150-HP engines:
Four-Stroke
Mercury Verado 150
Suzuki DF150
Yamaha F150
Honda BF150

Two-Stroke
Mercury Optimax 150
Evinrude E-TEC 150

In terms of sound at idle speed of 1,000-RPM, the quietest motors:

dB-SPL / Motor
63.5 -- Suzuki
64.0 -- Verado
65.5 -- Yamaha
66.5 -- Honda
69.0 -- E-TEC
72.0 -- Optimax

However, pump the speed up to 1,500-RPM, a typical No-Wake speed, and the order changes to

dB-SPL / Motor
70.0 -- Yamaha
70.5 -- Honda
71.0 -- Verado
71.5 -- Suzuki
75.0 -- E-TEC
79.0 -- Optimax

Jump ahead to cruising speed, and the order changes again. This time we are going to look at boat speed, not engine speed. This helps the two-strokes because they won't be running the engine quite as fast. Now the results are:

dB-SPL / Motor / MPH
84.0 -- E-TEC -- 29-MPH
84.0 -- Yamaha -- 27.9-MPH
84.5 -- Honda -- 27.6-MPH
87.0 -- Verado -- 27.8-MPH
89.5 -- OptiMax -- 27.7-MPH
90.5 -- Suzuki -- 30.3-MPH

At wide open throttle, the ranking changes some more. Again we compare at boat speed not engine speed:

dB-SPL / Motor / MPH
92.5 -- Honda -- 42.9-MPH
96.0 -- Verado --45.1-MPH
97.5 -- E-TEC -- 48.8-MPH
99.0 -- Suzuki -- 44.0-MPH
101.8 -- OptiMax -- 45.0-MPH
102.0 - Yamaha -- 45.3-MPH

It's a 115 2plus2 if I'm reading this right, a great motor design that is actually pretty good on gas (and IS surprisingly quiet) if you are not WOT all the time. Over 1800 RPM it runs on 4, under 1800 RPM, runs on 2.
