Just curious, I had one in my hands this morning. Never held one bigger. It felt ridiculous.

Depends whether it was a male or female I suppose....

Posts: 294 Location: Bloomer, Wi | Here we go, sorry for even attempting to make an optimistic guess. Guess my estimate was high , probably cuz of cabin fever.

Just food for thought. A previous state record in Illinois was 49 1/8" inches and 37lbs 13 oz. This one was 51" and pre spawn as well. Fun to speculate since it wasnt weighed. 34-37lbs? Maybe heavier? possible for both. Again, fun to speculate.

Posts: 720 | Dave Thanks for posting that video. I love to see big fish like that. I would like to split the difference and say 38 to 40 pounds. That was a beautiful fish. Thanks again. Dave

Posts: 2024 | 41.2888899398857898209 lbs. Yes, definitely. Based on my analysis - which is obviously never wrong - this appears to be the fish's true weight.... (tongue in cheek for those that can't read sarcasm) WHO CARES!!! It's a GIANT, so go out and CATCH it!!!!

Nice one Esox, Really, it is just nice to see fish like that in Illinois. Of course there have been many others, but it is always encouraging. It was a blast to see that thing and to hear that there were a few others like it in the nets this spring. Fun stuff. I just got the stills back and one of my 5 year old sons was on the boat. He now cannot stop talking about the muskie that was bigger than him. Looks like i have a new muskie freak on my hands. I will ease him into it over the years.

Posts: 2024 | What I liked best about the footage was not the fish, but the people's reactions. You can hear a lady in the background encouraging the fish to be put back. All the "ooos" and "ahhs" are great! Great way to light a spark in some young fishermen, too!

Posts: 95 | Just curious if this was lake carol why is the DNR netting on a private lake or was this performed by a private company

Lake Carroll actually has their own hatchery and they do their own netting/rearing/returning to the lake. It is all run by members of the fishing club and friends. I am lucky enough to own land out there and belong to the fishing club so i help out when i can.

Posts: 11 | A lot of those little lakes in NW Illinois have some sow fish...I bet the state record comes out of Lake Carrol or Apple Canyon Lake within the next couple years just because of the limited pressure on those private lakes. Most of the people there don't even realize the potential of the fisheries and just prefer to go swimming or fish for bluegills and crappies and bass...who knows, maybe the one you had in your hands would have been the new state record...all I know for sure is that I'm going to continue to pound those lakes until I catch Old Wanda because I have seen her time and time again.

There are big ones in these lakes and you might be right Darkstar. Then the debate can start about if it counts since it was caught on a "private" lake.

Posts: 272 | The thing that struck me wasn't so much the size of the fish, but every time that fish gets to turning on her side, she thrashes and if you don't have a good hold on them, they'll shake loose. I think this is when alot of guys drop fish. When a fish is alert and not exhausted.....when they feel themselves start to roll onto their side, they thrash. Good netting/handling lesson there.

Posts: 385 | So, can the public even fish this lake ? The property owners stock musky in it and then dont fish for them? Someone enlighten me please.

Hey Matt, Property owners of lake carroll and guests can fish the lake. "Joe Public" coming off the street cannot. You do not need to have a home, just land in order to have full use of the area. I like it because on top of the lake, it has a 15 mile off road trail (atv's), ski hill, indoor&outdoor pool, an 18 hole golf course too and i dont have to pay greens fees either. Great for my family.

Posts: 57 Location: LENA IL | I am a lot owner @ Lake Carroll and besides myself there are a good number of people who do fish for Musky's out there. If you just own a basic access lot for the use of the lake and golf course it's pretty reasonable.
