One of my 3 kids has developed an amazing set of skills in the field of fish catching. She's 15y/o and won the "2007 Kalamazoo Gazette Big Fish Contest, Walleye Division" with a 31" fatty that will soon be on the wall in my house.

Now check this out....she caught that walleye bottom fishing next to the boat on a little jig/live leach using a 4.5' microlight rod with a Pinnacle Ice Reel loaded with 3# braided superline. She hooked it in 30' of water and it took over 10 minutes just to get the fish to come off the lake bottom. Then another 15 minutes bringing her up, and up, and up. I kept the boat right on top of the fish and I netted that wallye the first time she appeared and rolled on the surface near the boat. 3# test line!!!!! She also caught and released about 15 walleyes between 25" and 30" over the last season. All of these fish in a lake that's not suppose to have hardly any walleyes at all.

Check this out.....you know how bass hold in the shade under piers and attached ski boats/pontoon boats in the summer mornings? Walking along the shore, she'll get one or two bass from every pier she hits. She says walking on the pier spooks the bigger bass so she only fishes from shore. She's learned to underhand flip a tiny jig, from shore, under and all the way to the a$$ end of a moored pontoon boat. Distance-wise, she can toss that little jig 30 or so feet without the jig ever rising more than 2 feet above the water. I can't do that and I bet you can't either. Sheet, Kevin Van Dam, aka Mr. Vacume Cleaner, can't do that.

Man, she can fish and I'm so proud of her, and love her so much, well, I get dizzy when I think of it all.

Any cool stories of yer kid?

Thankfully, I have no kids! My dad would probably share some good stories of me growing up though...

Not my kid, don't have any of my own yet, but my nephew...

Instead of having a traditional rattle he would carry around a burt, jake, or shallow raider without hooks on it. Kids like to chew on stuff, instead of toys, teething rings, etc., this kid would walk around chewing on a hookless bulldawg.

By the time he was three he could go through a tackle box and name muskie baits. When Merckid saw him doing this he couldn't believe it. He would pull baits out of boxes and wouldn't tangle them, would be careful of the hooks, and would sit there telling you exactly what each bait was.

My brother took him into Rollie and Helen's and he just shook with excitement and walked around naming almost every bait there was.

Kids his age normally watch kids shows. Not this one. If a fishing show, any fishing show comes on he'll pull up a chair for him and his dad to watch it.

This pic is from a stocking project where we took him along. He was not shy at all about reaching in and grabbing little muskies to stock. As he's dumping them over the side of the boat he was telling them "grow bigger so my daddy can catch you someday." Pretty cool stuff.

Another quick Rachel story....

Rachel and I occassionally fish a nearby river for carp. And we target big carp only; 20 pounds or more is our quest. We've learned that, in the river we fish, we can't use anything lighter than my jig/creature muskie rod/reel loaded with 30# PowerPro. Even steelhead hooks straighten out while playing a big carp in the current.

My biggest is like 12-15#. Her biggest would have tipped the scales at 25# or better, and by the time she finally landed the fish there were cars stopped on boths sides of the river, a bunch of folks watching this 12y/o land a fish that weighed maybe more than half of her.

Fishing for really big (20# or more) carp is tricky stuff, not like what you would think if you've never tried it.

Ah, kids. Ah, kids with big fish.

Last night Sarah and I went down to the Dells to the NWTF state banquet. They asked me to give a presentation to the kids about fishing. It was an awesome time. This one girl who was about 9 showed me a picture of a 47" on her phone that she caught, and then a kid spent about 15 mins. telling me about the 58 POUND crappie he and his dad caught. I want to fish crappies with him!

when my daughter was 8 we went to the sportsman show in St. Paul and checked out the Ron Schera kids clinic he does at the show, well my daughter walks up to the casting area that had a big bulls eye on the wall and on her first cast put a little Velcro fish dead center while there were about 4-5 12 yr old boys working the wall with numerous casts showing very limited luck, the guy who was working with her called out to the others doing the same with the boys and hollered to check out this little girl! Yes I was very proud of her but no more than when I watch her bait a hook with a leach cast and catch a nice walleye on her own She was one that that would when not at the lake stand in the back of my truck and work on her casting, well it has paid off for her because now at the age of 11 she loves to fish for what ever is biting how ever I don't think shes quite ready or patient enough to cast for the big girls yet but we will work on that one.

Love the kids stories !!! My son is 5 and he can put some fish in the net !! He knows every muskie bait around ( and thanks to my wallet !! ) and owns almost as many as I do !! He picks his baits when we go bass fishing , and picks them well !! FORTUNATELY I spend more time releasing his fish than I do fishing !!! He's definitely hooked on hunting and fishing , and his little sister is right in his tracks !! She's only 2 1/2 but learning fast , she wants to play with all of the baits all the time !! Takes after me , she loves the Bulldawgs !! I can't wait until they're a bit older and can stay in the boat with me all day , and can't wait until they can out fish me !!!

She's only 2, but off to a good start I think... we can sit there all day, at least until the worms are gone. And I would trade those days for anything.

Scott, that's awesome!!!

I took one of my little ones out yesterday. She's a little over 1 1/2. She sat in the sled and we popped from hole to hole "shshing" for bluegills. She was a tad nervous at first when I showed her one, but was petting them before we let them go by the end.

She then proceeded for the next hour to ask "where did shshy go?"

She was even figure 8ing the jig pole in the hole. Looks like I have a future musky chick on my hands. I can't wait until next time. She was extremely patient, which I was amazed by.

This will be the year of less muskie fishing for me as my son loves to go pan fishing. I never thought I would find myself on Vermilion fishing for blue gills but I wouldn't change a thing.
