Posts: 7038 Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | I'm always amazed by the shortness of so many production muskie rod butts. Yes, that sounded weird. So, I'm wondering on this freezing Sunday, how do you hold your rod? Sounding worse all the time. I'm a palmer, was taught that way long ago, but how many of you aren't, or whatever.

Posts: 20218 Location: oswego, il | I have tried the foregrip but I prefer palming. For one, I just lengthened my rod 6", who's sounding bad now? By palming I can get a better wrist snap on my glide and twitch baits. Palming can make my hand sore and sometimes cold in late fall but for me I think palming catches more fish.

Posts: 97 Location: Grand Rapids, Michigan | I used to palm all my reels, but now I mostly hold the fore-grip. I can just get much harder hook sets when holding the rod by the fore grip.

Posts: 3240 Location: Racine, Wi | I do both. When using rubber baits 2x10's and other baits that have pretty good resistance or give my wrist a beating, I'm using the foregrip. When throwing cranks, topwaters and smaller bucktails, I'm palming my junk.

Posts: 401 | Palm most of the time. I force myself to hold the fore grip after a long day. I have found the fat cork is easier to hold then the manufactored thin cork. Bigger the cork the less squeeze you have to do. My opinion. I have some demo 2 inch Syncork that I am going to prototype this year. Keith Edited by Professional Edge 1/21/2008 7:45 AM

Posts: 2427 Location: Ft. Wayne Indiana | I hold the foregrip. I feel I get a better hook set and can control my baits alot more while holding holding the foregrip cork. Also it allows your rod to be closer to your body so when you give your rod a quick snap when a fish hits it is done very quicky. I am not a fan of the palming and the full body hook set and I think palming the reel get the rod to far away from your body which makes your do a full body hook set and also makes your rod tip go flying towards the sun, which is another huge no no

guys with little hands like HTrain seem to prefer the foregrip ...us manly men with big hands that can dwarf even a 7000 like to palm the reel....to each their own....they both work!

Posts: 134 | I palm also but I see people using longer rods; eight or nine foot and then have extra long rear grips and then hold the rod by the fore grip. You are back to using a 7 or 7 1/2 foot rod out in front of you. I like the eight foot plus rods myself I just wonder how long is too long. Can a rod be too long? Joe W

Posts: 1291 Location: Hayward, Wisconsin | Even though I have a small hand, I palm the reel...just more comfortable for me...unless using the pounder baits or double ten blades then the wrist just can't take it for long. As for hook setting, I've found that most "serious biters" hook themselves and a hard hook-set isn't necessary...ever see Pearson or Bob M set a hook? Nope. In one clear water fishery where I go, if you set the hook you will miss MOST of the fish due to the manner in which they strike (straight up off the bottom). Hard to learn to "not" set the hook after doing so for 50 years, but not setting the hook there has resulted in nearly 100% hook-ups...something to consider!

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | I always palm the reel. I feel like I can give twitches and snaps to a twitchbait easier. I've tried holding the foregrip and it just feels funny. Saying that, I should probably try to learn the foregrip hold for ripping and pulling big plastics and crankbaits. curleytail

Posts: 691 Location: nationwide | I started out muskie fishing using the foregrip . . . . changed to the palming because it looked cool. Then changed back a few years ago. After some backyard experimenting I found I get a far better hookset with the foregrip versus palming the reel. I think age is playing a part as well because I know when twitching crane baits palming the reel I do not last very long anymore. Corey Meyer

Posts: 2089 | I palm the reel 99% of the time. Late Fall trowing big baits in frigid temps will find my hand working it's way up the rod to the foregrip as the day progresses. I can't /don't wear gloves late in the year and the foregrip is much easier to hold than a frozen reel. Plaxico Burress is sending me some of his gloves from the game yesterday to try out this season. He said they worked great in Wisconsin in the super cold so they should work in Minnesota too.LOL!!! It depends on the weather. I prefer holding the fore grip when its cold outside. Its even possible to fish with thick gloves on, that way. But in "normal" teperatures I prefer palming the reel. Mag / Sweden

Posts: 156 Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | Palmer, who said you can't bill dance hook set a musky? If Pearson can do it I can do it. Ever see a jackpot worked by a foregripper? Looks like my grandma doing pushups Edited by needa70lber 1/21/2008 1:25 PM
