Location: Illinois | Daiwa's TD LUNA 300 is the best out there. I wouldn't throw Cowgirls on anything else. Hands down the best musky reel out there!

"Daiwa's TD LUNA 300 is the best out there. I wouldn't throw Cowgirls on anything else. Hands down the best musky reel out there!" its the same spool size and gear ratio as the calcutta look at the calcutta 700 or like mentioned before the 7000 abus

Posts: 231 | I have a Calutta 400TE with a power handle. I beleive it's a 5.0 1, I also have a 700B (4.7 1?) (a little heavy, but powerful!), and I have the Luna (5.1 1). All three reels are great! The power handle makes a big difference, I'm sure others will agree. Chas Edited by Chas 11/15/2007 1:46 PM

Posts: 1764 Location: Ogden, Ut | I don't throw double 10s all that often but when I do, I try to use a 7000 Pro Rocket that I picked up used. It seems to work well, but in all honesty, when I throw them with either a Record or an Induron, it isn't that much of a hardship at all. I can't speak directly as to what it might be doing to the reels since they are all still working fine. I think putting a power handle on pretty much anything will help a lot. S.

Posts: 654 Location: MPLS, MN | I've used the abus 6500C3 for the last 2 years throwing cowgirls with no probs. I through them alot. The gear ratio I think is the same as the 7000 so what is the advantage for getting a 7000 over the 6500?

Posts: 786 Location: Minnesota | QUESTION 2: What about a reel for those big (#13 or #14???) double bucktails coming out soon? That is the reel I want and then I am sure it will be a dream with the double #10s too. TIA

Gear ratio is the advantage. 6500 is 5.3:1 7000 is 4.1:1 Much easier pulling these big blades with the 7000

The gear ratio I think is the same as the 7000 so what is the advantage for getting a 7000 over the 6500? the 7000's have a MUCH larger spool size as well.......the larger the spool size the more line pickup.....there is a HUGE difference between the two reels

I 'burnt' through 3 Luna 300's this year....I fish alot but 3 reels in one year is a little stupid if you ask me. I too am trying to find a reel that will hold up a little better than the Lunas. Thinking about going with an Okuma but know nothing about them and I dont know anyone who has one to get feedback from. I have Calcuttas on my other rods so I might just stick with those.

Posts: 84 | I have a 7000 and a Penn 975. Both are excellent reels for any bait which has #10 Colorado blade(s). I much prefer the Penn because the spool size is about the same as the 7000, and the gear ratio is similar to that of the 7000. Also, the Penn 975 is a tank! The two features for me that win hands down are the Penn's weight being noticeably less than the 7000 and the two position handle of the Penn. These make reeling those big baits easier for me with the Penn than with the 7000. That's a big deal for when retrieving those wrist killer lures. The Penn's paddle handle is also more comfortable for me than that of the 7000 but I'm sure that depends on individual preference. Either reel is an excellent choice but I'd suggest trying the Penn if you get the chance.

Posts: 2037 Location: lansing, il | for 100.00 you can get a low gear pete maina reel from bass pro. (4.3:1 i think) the low gear maina reel will get the job done. ive had one for 2 years now and not had any trouble with it.

Swap the stock regular handle that is on that reel and replace it with the power handle that already comes with the reel on it and it pulls them fine!

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | In my experience, the Penn 975 worked better than either the 7000 I had or the Luna, though the luna didn't work well in any situation(instant anti went out on both of mine in sort order). Last few days, the cold has put a damper on my other Diawa line counters and my Morrums, but the 975 has been great in both trolling and casting situations as of late. If the casting version of the Okuma is as good as my Cnvector trolling reels, I wouldn't hesitate to try them either. The Okumas have been under some considerable torture this week, and work as smoothly in 19 degree weather, as 79. Very good stuff. Edited by Reef Hawg 11/16/2007 3:56 PM

Posts: 13688 Location: minocqua, wi. | i chose the 7000 over the 975 totally based on dealer location "if" i were to have a problem. i know of both brands blowing up from experience from trusted friends so i wanted an over the counter deal if i were to experience a problem. too bad there isn't a 975 dealer close-by ... they surely could sell more reels. doing business over the internet with a company in new jersey or with rollie and helen's a mile down the road ... that was my reason ... and i was really happy with it ... combined with one of Keith's longer Diamondbacks and i'm outrageously pleased with my choice and wish i had done it two years ago ...

Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | no name-Heard we will need a saltwater reel to bring those big girls in! Can't wait to see these in action and the numbers of 50'+ fish go up on the stat charts. I can only imagine that if the vibration of a double 10 brings in fish like it does what the vibration of a double #13 will do!!! and in the night, oh baby!

Tackle booty, isn't time you start making some big blades? We love your bulldawg type lures, they have been producing for us this fall.... You sure could come out with some great clothing with a name like tacklebooty too... I don't think you will need a saltwater reel, people make a big deal out of something big because it is different, once you get use to it, no big deal...

Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | No Name-As for the reels I have pulled my big BootyTails and Cowgirls and DC10s and XXX and ...... all over the lake with little problems with my Abu 6500 and it has a power handle on it. Still, I can tell it is at it "peak" when burning them in. Plus at the end of a 10 hour day it does get to my arms. Yes, I am a desk junky 50-60 hours of the week at my full time job... The arms get a work out only when I go fishing or make baits on Saturday morning. If I get some of these big Cowgirls or DC13s(??not sure if they are coming or not??) I want to make sure it is a good 10 hour on the water session. I think some have said they use the Trinidad 16? My problem with some of the saltwater reels is that they don't have the level wind systems. I have not looked into saltwater reels enough to see if I can find a good reel with a level wind. A guy on eBay sells Shimano reel (about 300 at a time) and I have a note into him to see what he recommends. As for me making these big lures. If I did it would not be for a while. I have other projects taking my money away right now. Three topwaters that are burning a hole in the bank account right now with all of the tooling costs and testing. Thanks for the props though on the lures.

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | Try the new ABU 7000C3i, 4:1:1 gear, 6 pin cent brake, 3 bearings, carbon matrix drag, wt is 21oz, retails for $129.95 If price is not a problem try the Shimano CTE700, THIS REEL IS SO SMOOTH and wt is 19 oz. On your 400 TE do you have a power handle on it ??? if not try that first. I don't know what I will use on the 13 blade cowgirls when they come out. Edited by PIKEMASTER 11/18/2007 9:22 PM

Posts: 238 | I just purchased a calcutta 700 te as a dedicated cow girl/big blade reel.I have only had it for a week now but put the boots to it everyday for a week as i was on holiday and have to say its the best big blade reel i have ever used. The 7000 is a good reel but the 700 te is much better.I used 400te,s for two seasons with great results as well but was just looking for something better and i can say i have found it HANDS DOWN.It took a little getting used to the size but once i got accustomed to the bigger frame it was awsome!I cant wait to use it for a full season next year.Very happy with my decision on this reel as i was a little aprehensive with this order, but not no more!
