I bring this up not because I lost a big muskie recently, but because I totally screwed the pooch last night on a monster buck. Needless to say, I have been reliving the moment for the past 17 hours and thoughts of muskies lost this summer have entered into my mind as well.

Personally, I think I am going to have to spend some serious time at the gym today and then get drunk. Any other ideas?

Go back out and get him tonight......If I botch a fish, I'll make another cast, then about 10,000 more.

Last year when I caught my 47.5 incher I missed it on the cast early and got pretty upset, yelling a few obscene words, then I casted again and she ate again and I didnt miss that time!

I've been both situations my friend !! It happens to the best of the best too , you just have to keep that in mind . Big deer get big because they're not stupid , big fish figure out a way to get the steel out of their face ... just the hard part of the game to deal with !!! Now you just have to hope that big buck gets stupid chasing tail and presents himself again !! Muskie Mike and I had a couple of good shots at quality fish during the P.I. outing and nothing to show for it , but it's what keeps me going back , you just never know when the true beast will present itself and let you win the battle !!

Believe me, more monsters are going to be out tonight. Many will say "trick or treat", ward them off with candy and you will be fine.

The way I look at it is that it's just another learning experience. If you did something wrong to totally blow it, then next time don't try to make that mistake. That's what I tell myself, and it works....kind-of. But also sometimes...well, it happens. That's what happened to the big fish I lost last year. I was hunting this fish for two weeks and saw her four times before she finally ate. Over 53". Broke 65lb power pro. I was sick to my stomach. Still am when I think about it, but sometimes it just happens. And the very next day, in fact for two and a half weeks after that, I was on the water everyday. Don't give up....soon enough you'll be rewarded.

I try to identify if I did anything wrong. If not, then that time the Muskie won. Next time, however..

Hey Jim! How are things?

How big of a buck? Let's just say that it was a massive 8 pointer. Outside the ears, bases were probably at least 3 inches in diameter, long main beams, and at least 12 inch tines that were all heavy.

The thing is, I am starting a new job next Monday and I have to move up to Duluth from the cities so last night was the last night I am going to be able to bowhunt for a while. Had seen this deer 3 nights prior, moved a tree stand to get right on his scrape line and waited for him to show up for 3 nights. He shows up last night with a half hour of light left, but I didn't see him until he was basically right below me working a scrape. The bastard snuck up from behind while I was watching a doe in the corn out in front of me. I actually was in the process of turning around to check my rear when I heard him working the scrape...talk about a surprise. Well, then I made the mistake of taking my eyes off the deer as I clipped my release on and as I was slowly turning back to see what he was doing he pegged me and took off.

Lesson learned: DON'T TAKE YOUR EYES OFF THE DEER AND DON'T MOVE WHEN THEY ARE RIGHT BELOW YOU!

Deer hunting 101, I know, but I am used to being up 20-25 feet in the air. This tree only allowed me to get up about 12 feet...

Doing well Chris...

Gotta love those big old main frame 8's!!!!

Good luck on your new career!

A three day weekend this week for bow hunting, a four day weekend next week, then in a few weeks a week of rifle hunting, then a week after that I take off with Herbie, Rob and Danny for Nebraska on a muzzle loader hunt for mulies/whitetails.

Man I could go for 6 months of November!!!!!!!!!!

Bummer! Stick with it. Good things happen to those who wait. He'll be bigger next year, or better yet he may give you chance your next trip out. All I know is, if I quit something after every time I botched it up, I'd have absolutely nothing to do but sit on the couch. That's what makes it fun.

Jim, I agree, I love November!

not very well..... tonight when you see the little kiddies walking around run up and snatch a big ole bag of candy away from a 6 or 7 yr old. then add in half a bottle of crown and about 10 beers.

Yeah, the only big fish I still bum about was a break off. Sometimes you lose them and it's OK, really sux when you have a lure in thier mouth and you don't know whether the fish will be OK. I've always wondered what the survival rate would be if the fish has a musky lure stuck in thier craw.

Depends on what I am doing...... Muskies usually entail a lure slap , possible rod throwing, and uncontrollable baby like behavior.

This year had a 360 + Bull Elk at 40 yards that just wouldnt give me a step, respect him I guess , right?

I lost 2 big fish over the last 2 weeks, trophies and not only that but my Evinrude blew a head gasket on Monday night. The launch on Pewaukee is so full of peat that it clogged my water intake. It's not going to stop me even though the season is over at the end of next month. You just have to except the fact that more time on the water gives you more chances to see and catch big fish. This year I caught a lot of small fish but the effort was there and more big fish were also there. Just don't let it get you down to much......I've gone a whole year without a fish.

And don't blame the Netman

I only did this once and learned from my mistake fast. Its called the "Duck melt down".

You break your St Croix Avid into many pieces along side your boat wile screaming at the top of your lungs. Dont stop till you only have cork handle left. Then cry because you lost the fish and your rod.

That was a sad sad day.

Awwwww Will, ya had to mention a big bull episode!!! I've tried to pack my episode from a stud bull last year in NM way back in my memory...now you jogged it loose... I 'wish" I would have missed him...absolute longest I have ever been at full draw (as another bull caught this one attetnion when I was at full draw). He finally comitted to come in, just as i was letting down. Cranked it back again and settled my pin and released...my arms were wet noodles and I hit high and caught the top of one lung...I think. Never found him after many long attempts...I know it happens, but that one hurt...real BAD!!! Didn't even have the urge to go back hunting the next day, but sucked it up and did.

"lost" my grip measuring a big fish this past summer ... happened so fast ... what do you do ... laugh, remember it's something that you are doing for "fun", learn from the mistake, take pictures first and move on. oh, and take the ribbing, enjoy the story and go back to the same reef next year remembering what happened hoping to get another shot.

oh, forgot to mention ... i was in the boat with a guy who lost a true monster this past summer ... i think he copes by tying knots in seaguar ... tossing a 50ish into the drink before a pic is easy to get over compared to that one ... oh, the pain and anguish ... as soon as it started ... it was over .... ayaaaaaaaahhhhh, but there's always next year ...

Maybe say a very bad word- 4-5 times in a row, f%^&, f%^&,f%^&, f%^&..... Sit down until hands stop shaking, then get back to it. It's inevitable- you will lose/miss big fish or big buck's. They didn't get that big by accident. Self flagellation is only good if you're masochistic.

I lost an Illinois giant in Sept. How big? I don't frikin know, but big as a tree trunk and alot longer than the 48" I had in my hands earlier in the year. It was in slow motion, in she came, round and round, ate at the boat. Head shakes, and powerful run, turned her head...she was gone. What do you do? How do you feel? Like someone you love leaving you. I think I threw up in my mouth a little, knees shaking, adrenalin crash, speechless. I still have dreams.

Just lost what had seemed like a nice fish on a sucker at 2:45pm. Moon set?
She made one nice deep run and must have found something to tie herself up on. Lost all linkage, and hear something thrashing around. I believe a crib might be in play, hope she makes it.
Bad luck run continues
