The Muskyboy and I will be fishing all weekend looking for a big fall slob. It should be pretty good weather most of the weekend. Windy out there today but temps in the 60's.

Rain/snow on Friday night into Saturday morning. Highs in the upper 40's for Sat/Sun, Cold front will arrive sometime Friday...of course!

Water temps still hanging around the 50 degree mark out in the main lake, a bit cooler in the back bays. Not much action trolling yet.
Caught 2 big Pike yesterday trolling a 10" Jake. We didn't see much bait but it could change after the big wind today.

Have a safe trip up ya'll, Steve and I will be in the Big red Lund on the east end, casting until our arms fall off.
See ya out there!

G-man,

You got kroupa in the boat for the weekend good luck, look for me and hooks in the 620, sound like a crowd headed up, 4 hours and 8 minutes.

Maybe we could all hook up at the "Good Old Days" in Tower Saturday night after fishing. Best bacon cheeseburgers on the planet...

Even you ranger guys can come.

Hi All, which end is better this time of year? I thought there were more cisco on the west end but a lot of you fish the east end. I've caught big fish on the east side but I feel like I'm missing something on the west. Terry I've had the pleasure of fishing with you around big bay and with Craven in the middle part but haven't really given the west end a good chance yet. Is now the time to do it? Duff

we got our [butts] kicked ... i saw you guys with the ranger and the evi ... and the red lund ... we were in the green and white center console ranger ... we worked hard, found dirty water east and worked everything every way we know how and saw 4 fish in three days ... most we spoke to did as poorly or worse, even the walleye fishermen were complaining about a tough or non-existent bite. we moved west on saturday evening and found clearer water and another looker ... tough conditions to say the least ... our sense was that the bait fish were staging but moving around a lot and the muskies were traveling with them and not easily contacted by casting ... methinks you gotta be trolling to have a chance in the conditions we found ... i look forward to getting back there again though and we are committed to working to figure out this seasonal situation there ... first year, but more to come.

the cheeseburger in tower was great, nice people in town and they treated us really well ... it's a trip i look forward to taking again.

Hey all,
Steve and I trolled for 2 days and only managed to boat a couple of big Pike.
We did cast all day friday, but only saw one fish.

The Pike we caught on Saturday was 42" so it helped keep us motivated, despite all the wind and cold. We never did find any real large schools of baitfish.

We fished all over the east end looking for bait, deep water shallow water, we just couldn't find them. The tough combination of high pressure and the turnover did us in.

Monday and Tuesday could be better. Temps in the 60's and a south wind could be what turns them on.

Kind of goes to show that the Full Moon maybe isn't such a big deal. Wonder if a certain guide lost his boat due to no 50 lber being caught.

46 & 47 On Vermilion we put on a lot of miles, toughest bite I have ever seen, that lake is over rated.

A 50# was caught on MilleLacs, does that count.LOL

Kind of makes one wonder if the extreme pressure the past couple of years has put a big dent in the population. The numbers of big fish sure doesn't seem to be what it used too.

OK, now I've heard it all. A guy gets a 46 and a 47 and says the lake is 'overrated', there have been trips I can remember to LOTW, Pipestone, Wabigoon, Rainy, and others where I
we'd have welcomed a 47.

Sled and company are darned good fishermen, and they blanked.

It is what it is, a very good trophy muskie destination. Any body of water can beat any group of anglers up at any time, that's muskie fishing!

we found a similar situation to what what Terry described and by the end of the trip felt that our best chance was trolling which my boat isn't prepared for.

the bait-fish were in a pre-spawn situation and really all over the place and hard to find much less pattern ... we did find them concentrated in mass on friday at the entrance and into a couple of deep holes in a spawning bay where it narrowed down being fed by wind ... we felt pretty good about how and where we found them, and got a follow in that pattern, but then later that afternoon it was like they disappeared ... the gulls and loons were chasing them and it was worth it i think to work the area like we did ... but just couldn't get an eater out of it.

we used the sun and wind to set up situations for windblown, sun-exposed shorelines and transitioned to main basin reefs mid and later in the day ... and finally worked back-current locations, shelfs and then finally deeper humps and reefs ... you name it and we set a plan and worked it ... it's been awhile since i've been to Vermillion, but i felt the water in the east area was pretty dirty ... especially the southernmost areas and finally as we asked the question, is it what we're doing?, where we were doing it?, what they want to eat? where they want to eat high or low in the column? ... or is it the lake (i have a hard time ever believing it's the lake) ... we did trek to the dam down the end of pike bay to take a peak looking for traveling baitfish to no avail ... finally we scrapped the east end and headed west ... we both just felt dirty water, cold dry air ... major wind direction change from south hard, to calm to northwest hard and cold put us into a tough situation requiring a major change ... on the west end right away we found cleaner water and got another fish to show up ... by this time it was late saturday afternoon and my stupid 74lb. 24-volt tm had played out carving against the wind all day (never bring a boy to do a man's job ... buy the stupid 100 lb. 36-volt motor!). we woke up sunday to 22 degrees and a call for high winds ... without the ability to troll effectively we headed for home ...

oh, and the minn-kota guy put my cable in backwards so had to switch the lobes of my brain around and teach my foot to work in the opposite ... talk about crazy ... then the front locator was out for almost a full day of it til mcgiver (grimm) fixed it in the parking lot ... it was mind over matter in our boat and we did our best.

what i came away with is that Vermillion is awesome, but nothing comes free and easy. it was our first october moon on Vermillion, but not our last ... we know things now that will better prepare us for next year and the year after and the year after ... but at the end of the day we took a swing at the fences and came up short ... this time.

The lake is way overrated, I would stay away and not fish it again, it is "The Dead Sea".

Moved something like 7-10 fish friday, with hooks scoring 5 minutes before moon rise, saturday move 7-10 fish, losing a 50" class fish on boat side strike, with hooks coming out immeadiately, hooks looses a mid 40 with his sally hookset, moved a horse went back on her at moon hook up to catch the smaller of the 2 fish we moved on the spot, reposisition for another pass at her and again hook up only to be a 40" we did not see the tank again. Sunday started hot, move a fish on the first 8 spots, again Sally hookset looses one. Monday sun no wind, didn't move a fish to moon started going down, and water temps were on the climb again.

If moving 7-10 fish a day makes a lake overrated or a "dead sea" I would like to see a good lake. Fact is, that is a good day on the water. Need to try some new tecniques to convert those follows, also you were early, try the west once the water is in the 40's. Don't give up on the big v! Good luck

Only one group of anglers moved 7-10 fish per day. The vast majority, and I talked to alot of them and monitered the radio didn't see anything like that. The trollers were doing very poor too. I agree 7-10 fish seen a day is a very good day on Vermilion, not the norm though. It seems like you can fish hard all week long on V now and may catch one or two but they could be real big. For the most part Vermilion has gone from a numbers lake to a chance at a trophy lake. If you want action this is probably not the lake for you. However if you want to gamble and try for a hog it may be, but then there are lots of other lakes with hogs in them now a days.
