The thread on the 50#/50" idea is bringing up this poll. Posting anonymously to a poll should yield more reliable results. How many 50"+ fish have you personally caught in your life? Not how many in your boat....

If I only can catch one more, then seven more, then four more I will be up to twelve!
I've had a 53" in the boat, but it wasn't mine.

You got to love the 6% that have 30 or more....

I am pretty sure I know who a good number of them that are in that camp....and these guys are very fortunate....they have the time on the water, they have many years under their belt, fishing top waters.....are VERY skilled at what they do....and have some luck thrown in....

Nice to see these folks here on the site sharing thier info....THESE are the guys to listen too......not the internet pro's

I've been musklie fishing on purpose for 16 or 17 years, I think. I got my first 50 last fall. My previous best was 47 1/2, and that I did 3 times. Always said a 4 footer was a trophy. I was close, until last fall.

But I thank every fish that comes to visit my boat, big and small. I learn from every one of them.

i've been musky fishing on the water since '99, on the keyboard for about 4 years ... learned a lot on the water and learned more with the keys mostly because some of the people i now call my friends were strangers prior to internet fishing. being an internet pro has more to do with communication and sense of humor than anything and especially learning not to take things either so literally or personally (and i'm learning more and mor about that myself these days) ... my best friends were found fishing on the internet and now i get to share a boat and sometimes a trip and sometimes just ice fishing weekends with our kids ... all things that i wouldn't be doing without being an internet pro.

i've caught 2-50's ... both with a great story to go along with them ... lost 1 other and have had probably 5 or 6 legitimate shots that didn't go my way over the years. i've had more 50's in my boat when i got to be netman and camera man and those were all memorable as well. the one i remember most of course was the one with BigMo on Boom but it's because it came during a time when life wasn't so great for me ... and was great timing that summer to meet the group of guys that make up the rhinelander musky league came about that time ...

so ... i'd love to list the names of all the folks i've met over the years as a result of internet fishing but i'd run out of space on the post and that's pretty cool ... there's been times i'm fun and times i'm an a$$ but at the end of the day ... call me an internet pro too because i am ...

and i know another named Cory who i met through the internet .... now i know him through a week on the rock as i call it up there in vermillion bay, ontario ... from what i've seen and learned from him ... he's got quite a game. in-fact, i read his figure eight article this year and took away quite a bit from it ... this after i thought i was already decent at it ... the results helped me to have a pretty good trip ...

and that's all i have to say about that

i have 5 now...3 in 2 days this year helped that number...lost at least 5 more over the years...how many you have or don't have doesn't necessarily correlate to how good of a fishermen you are or aren't..to some degree yes, to some degree it's where you fish big time...oh and luck comes into play and those who say it doesn't i will never agree with...some may not call it luck but whatever, choose the word you want...
Cory is far from what I would call in internet pro...he actually catches fish and nice ones when he has the opportunity...
what some of us do and i will never do is put some guys who have tons of 50's on some pedestal...respect them yes, put them above me, nope, cuz maybe i'm a cocky sob but i can fish w/ the best of em on any given day...

50's are great but it's consistency on multiple bodies of water, not just one, that to me says you are a good fishermen...if you fished eagle for 1000 hours a year you had better have quite a few 50's in the boat or you just plain suck.

so you have 1 with an *

the * is the story .. and i need nothing from bette to confirm for me ... ahahahahaha that was crazy. i had 50 on the board before she did the "flop" ... the rest is the * ... it's the biggest fish i've grabbed a facefull of that's for sure ...

so the edit should read that "i've caught 2 big fish" then ... and i'll leave it at that. of course this to appease the accountability to you sir nelson.

the measurement was never the problem ... it was the picture that became the problem.

Just one for me (51) and another one almost tickling the 50 mark.

Cory...nice fish over the years...!!!

For various reasons, I just don't get on the water as much as I'd like, but hey, this year was a fun one!!

Ahhhh yes John, but that baby is "etched" in your mind, no doubt!!

None for me...I've been at this for 6 years and spend a lot of my free time educating myself on Muskies and Muskie fishing. The water I have access to has good numbers but rarely produces a 50. Only one caught in the last three years that I am aware of. My biggest is extremely fat 44 spring time female. I have roughly 27 total in the boat. I don't have a lot of time to spend on the water but absorb all I can everytime I go out.

I don't understand some of the previous comments provided by Mr. Painter (ignoring the inappropriate comment by "Guest"). I respect your accomplishments and knowledge you undoubtedly have regarding muskies but is it necessary to belitte the contributions or knowledge of others?

Whether a person has 5 or 500 muskies in the boat, they have gained experience that others can benefit from. You no doubt have more experience than most but lets not belittle others or suggest you have something more important to say than the next guy because you can count a few 50's in your resume.

The way a person gains knowledge is not a qualifier regarding who gets to teach others or who gets to make posts to this form.

When will people realize that it doesn't matter how many 50"ers you have, or how many fish you have caught? It's all relative. Fish for muskies long enough and you will soon realize that those with the MOST TIME on the water WIN. PERIOD.

Muskie fishing should not be a competive sport. Enjoy reaching your OWN personal goals and catching your OWN personal best. Who cares if another angler has twice or three times as many 50"ers as you do??? How can you measure yourself and compare yourself to some who fishes a different body of water and has more hours in. It's ridiculous.

Now if you fish the same amount of time and the same water as someone who clearly has a more consistant catch ratio...you should find out what you are doing wrong to improve your catches, but you shouldn't get in a tizzy over it.

I can not beleive how "competive" muskie anglers have become in the last 10 years. It really turns me off. Trust me on this...enjoy the experience of fishing muskies, enjoy your accomplishments as an angler. Want to have a great year...turn off the computer.

I like the idea of catching huge fish but I dont let something like not catching a 50incher detract from my enjoyment of the sport. I feel like if you cant enjoy catching a 36incher as much as a 50incher maybe you are missing out on some of the fun of this thing called musky fishing. I talked to a 15yr old kid this summer that caught a low 30's ski on the lake I was fishing. He was so excited about it and for him it could have been a 25incher and would have given him as much excitement and joy as the bigger fish. Thats where I want to be with my attitude about the sport and we can all learn alot from kids - they seem like they truly enjoy fishing more than alot of people I meet. I try to take my fishing seriously and have fun with it at the same time.

Everyone goes thru phases in Muskie fishing. After a few years of learning and a couple of big fish you get 'bigfishious' and only hunt for big ones until someone like the kid in the above the post wakes you up and makes you appreciate the experience again. It's all about the thrill. What the thrill is is up to you.

I would like to respond to Chiefs question and clarify where I am coming from.

Chief said:
"I don't understand some of the previous comments provided by Mr. Painter (ignoring the inappropriate comment by "Guest"). I respect your accomplishments and knowledge you undoubtedly have regarding muskies but is it necessary to belitte the contributions or knowledge of others?"

After reading this and reading others comments about how its not the number of 50's you have but the time on the water. I actually totally agree to a point. The thread was about number of 50's one had. I got slammed for being an "internet pro" which Mr. Worrall edited.

I didn't mean to slam other folks knowledge. But I would like to comment on what is book knowledge and what is true knowledge. An internet pro is someone that has all the wonderful answers as they have read in magazines or on line and sound pretty convincing they know what they are doing. However, some of these folks have VERY LITTLE time on the water. They are "book smart" but not on-the-water smart. Get some of these folks in the boat and you see it right away. Do I discredit a lot of info that comes from some internet pros? I would say yes. Time on the water is the equalizer.

I would argue though time on the water doesn't automatically make you a good fisherman. If you have been at this 10 plus years with a fair amount of time on the water you SHOULD have a few decent fish under your belt (decent is relative to the body of water you fish).

So I might not have been as tactful as needed, so I appologize if that was the case. But I still believe that I weight the information I get depending on who it is I am getting it from. That goes for fishing as well as my professional career.

Now lets all go out and stick some fiddies!

Cory

(5) All from LOTW. It is my goal to catch a 50 in Wisconsin and I will take pride in that when and if it happens. I have a lot of respect for those who have mastered catching multiple 50's in Wisconsin. That in my opinion speaks highly of their skills as musky fishermen. Not to take away anything from those who catch 50's outside of the state I just feel that it's more of a challenge boating a 50 from a WI inland lake. Ed

Why wouldnt one want to be competitive. Why would i spend all the money on gas, time, hotels, lures, to go out and not fish very competitively, rather than casting and say how much i am enjoying the outdoors. If people just wanted to enjoy the outdoors they can go to a local park and go for a walk. Why spend all the money and say oh geez, i didnt catch fish today, now i can drive 150 miles home. not everyone lives on/near a great muskie lake loaded w/ 50 inchers???

My wife and I got three last year on St. Clair. She was the 2006 Muskies inc womens division champion. Michelle King. She landed two of the three a 51.5 and a 52 both over 30 lbs. Mine was a 30.4 lb 52 incher. We caught two of three trolling Talonz Slashers and got one on A Loke Crank. However we got 10 other muskies over 47 inches last year. Most on Slashers. 49,49 48.5 48,48, 47.5 47.25,47,47,47. I got a 47.5 to end the year. It had 23 inch girth. It was as big as my 52 in weight. I dont think being over 50 inches is as important to me as being over 30 lbs. But its a cool post. I have lost more 50 inchers then I have landed. Kingfisher

I have lost more 50 inchers then I have landed.

this is a very interesting aspect of things to me.

i've been reading the interviews in the Eli Singer "Musky Chronicles" books, and every guide and fishing personality he talks to has stories of "the one that got away" which is inevitably the biggest fish the person had ever seen, and in some cases was a sure world record if it'd been landed. some of the people are believable, some are not. i guess that's a natural part of fishing and tale-telling.

how many estimated 50"+ fish do you think you've lost vs how many caught?
for me: 2 caught, 1 lost.

and even more intriguing: how many follows did you think were 50" at the time, but in more rational hind-sight might down-size a bit?
for me: 3 or 4 follows were "over-estimated" in the excitment of the moment

Great question Lambeau - I realize some of my early follows/losses that I attached the 50" tag to were overexaggerated. Spending much time on the water in the past few years my perspective is a lot more conservative.

1 follow on Eagle that I thought was 50, probably was not

2 fish lost on Cass, one was well over 50" (I thought she was big the first day when I lost her, saw her again the 2nd day with hook wound in the corner of her mouth), another one that ate at the boat and didn't get hooks. I saw both of these fish up close and personal.

My PB 48" last fall I thought was 45-46" at the most, but my partner called her right on.

50" in the boat, this fall, no excuses

I have none. I have not lost any that I know of. Of those I have seen, two were "probably" 50, and one was agreed upon by everyone in the boat to be 52" at least. One thing that stood out about the 52" was how fat it was. Not so much across the head or the back, but when it turned and you could see the whole side of the fish it was scary. Big around as your thigh-scary. Makes me realize that a lot of the 24" girths you see posted ain't no 24"...

I am glad to see that I am still in the biggest group.  My PB to date is a 44.  But, I have only been fishing muskies the past two years, and I have had some great chances at big fish.  I am fortunate enough to fish LOTW regularly, and I know at some point I will land a fiddy.

At Minaki a month ago I had an honest 50" follow hot on my DCG and around the 8 three or four times before sucking in the bait.  I lost it by making the rookie mistake of not setting the hook towards the tail, and she swam off into the sunset.  What a total adrenaline rush!  My knees were literally shaking, and I had to sit down for about five minutes to get my faculties together.  Sure, it would have been a heck of a lot better to actually catch it, but that fish will keep me going all winter.

I do agree with C_Nelson though. Every fish is a thrill to me regardless of the size.  When it isn't, it's probably time to hang em up.

Dave
