Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Hey every one. Hope the summer is full of catching and outdoor time! LOL Well I tried my first thru-wire this week. Trial by fire. After seeing Rowhunter (doug's) easy step by step pics I think I could have done it alot easier! LOL The hardest part is getting the lip wire, lip and body together all at once! I had epoxy all over everything. LOL A friend from Sweden sent me some pics of big salmon and trout that were grabbed while reeling them in by monster pike that they have over there. He sent a picture a beautiful Char that I had to make. Here are some pics. The lure is 2" thick at the widest point and the wood body is 11" long. I Have put 11 coats of clear on it so far. I shaded in between the coats with greens, blues and purple metalic paints. It really gave it alot of depth. I can't imagine the "wishmasters" and the 20 coats he puts on. I also did alot of wetsanding between the coats. I guess the whole thing was like a journey. I felt like one! LOL Take care John Attachments ---------------- DSC04695char4.jpg (24KB - 124 downloads) DSC04699char1a.jpg (26KB - 135 downloads) DSC04747char4.jpg (27KB - 126 downloads) DSC04750char3.jpg (25KB - 130 downloads)

Posts: 2112 Location: The Sportsman, home, or out on the water | Love the paint jobs! Judging the ring on the left hand, I assume your wife has a hobby to, with the time you dedicate to your paint! Not being nasty, just saying you spend alot of time on your craft, and being married, your wife does not mind. You do realistic work, brother!

Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Thanks guys, It was a fun one to do. I may tow it around this weekend to see how the layers of epoxy effected it from the early trial run. Rob, I try to do all the work on the baits after the family goes to bed. It seems to work for me. I enjoy the night hours when everything is settled down. I find it relaxing. It beats sitting around and watching the boob tube. The ring is usually in my nose during daylight hours with a short leash! LOL . I have got my sleep down to 4 hrs a night. The alarm goes off at 5 am. That is my punishment! LOL Jed, Those are bite marks and damage on the fish from giant Pike. One must have been hanging around the area they were fishing. If you zoom in you can see the individual teeth marks of the circle bite. I have been working on the bait for over 3 weeks. An hour here and hour there. I like to work that way. I have like 30-40 different bodies started in the shelves. I go down and pick one out to work on for a bit. I may not go back to it for weeks! LOL Thanks again everyone for the kind words. You guys are like family!!!!! LOL John

Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | The eyes are from Van dykes Taxidermy supplies. You can buy the all clear ones or they have a section that have some with a very small defect at a cut cost. I get some that have the black center already on them. The only defect that I have found are a very very small pin hole in the black area. I take a black marker and dot it. A pair of eyes are about $2.50. The pre-painted ones can get up to 5 bucks or higher for one pair. I am finding that you need very little paint to get a nice effect. The other important thing is to have a good back ground color for the eye before glueing it down to the body.

Posts: 786 Location: Minnesota | Tigger, Do you know where you can get these eyes stick on for cheap? I see some on production lures on eBay that have them. At least I am assuming they are cheap if they are on Super Shad bait? Look at the second picture here on some I found. http://cgi.ebay.com/6-5-Deepsea-Fishing-Lure-Marlin-Barracuda-Muski... Never seen these types of stick on eyes form WTP, Stamina, Rollie etc. I may call WTP tomorrow to see if htey know where to get these. Not sure my costs could cut the $2.50-$5. James PS-Those lures look great!

Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Thanks Scott! I am glad you like the walleye. I hope you catch some GIANT Sakatchewan pike in October with it. Thanks for the kind words, very unexpected post! Thanks again. Well ironically I just finished my second thru wire. It is a walleye. Doug I think of what you said about the controlled panic! I started laughing as the epoxy and clamps were dropping on the floor! LOL I player with metalic gold paint behind the glass eyes. I like how the light hits it in the sunllight. The body is close to 2" thick at the widest point. It is 12" long in wood body. Lots of fun to do. Helps me unwind before bed. Gets my mind off work. James I know the eyes you speak of. I don't know where to find them either. Take care everyone. Here are a couple of pics. | Just have to ask what is holding that lip in, and have you put weight on that lip to see if it moves under pressure? Thanks

Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Hello, I have the lip cut back to the eye. I leave it in from the outside wood and cover it with epoxy then paint. I have two stainless steel pins holding it from the top thru the lip and into the jaw. I hope it holds. LOL The flexing of the lip. I really try to make the bend of the line tie loop sharp as it exits the lower edge of the lip. When I pull the wire through It takes a bit of effort but pops nicely when achieved. It helps acts as an additional ledger I think. After I am done seeing those little white stars from pulling so hard I tie it to the internal through wire. The aluminum is .090 thickness. It is pretty rigid. I have been looking to a pattern shop to cut some stainless ones in the same thickness. I am still learning alot with each one. I am happy with the wide wobble that I got. I think the next step it to go to Cedar and to thicker wire as my friend Scott had suggested. I am all ears if anyone has any ideas that may help me speed up the learning curve. Take care John

Posts: 50 | Absolutely gorgeus bait !!! John you caught all the natural colors in that bait ,makes me wish i had a few in my possession. In most lakes here you can find pelagic pike hunting in open deep water &especially when you fish salmon they steal your plugs or bait . Congrats again on a job very very well done //Roger

Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Hey everyone. I hope all is well. I acant' beleive a fishing season is winding down! I got screwing around with some more of these giant thru wires. I am learning alot about the actions and the type of materials to use. I am still having a hard time tracking down a nice thick stainless wire. I used a nickle alloy type with these. It is a non rust species. It is a .11 grade. The first one is a King salmon. It is 13" long and almost 3" thick at its widest point. Man did it take some lead on this one! LOL I still have a couple more clear coats and maybe some clear pearls in some spots. It was a fun one to do. I used foil only on the cheek area. I have noticed some of the other builders do that and I really like the effect. Oh! It weighs a good heavy pound. Well maybe more! LOL Attachments ---------------- DSC05231king1.jpg (39KB - 113 downloads) DSC05230king3.jpg (37KB - 107 downloads) DSC05241king2.jpg (21KB - 118 downloads)

Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | The second is a yellow perch. I started to use the premium cedar. I am getting use to it. I notice that it give me a headache at times with the dust. I like the lightness of it. I can see its advantages. It is 11 " long and 1-3/4" thick at its widest point. I used the glass eyes again. I know they are overkill but I like doing it. LOL These short sunlit days will get the basement guys back into the cellars. I can't wait. It will be a fun winter Go Indians!!!!!!!!! Posts: 399 Location: Burton, Ohio | Jason I am a bit worried after Thursdays game! I feel the momentum switching. I didn't want to go back to Boston! Then who ever has Colorado next. Maybe we can catch Shilling on an off night. That is rare tho. Hey Mike, I have been putting lures on Ebay and sometimes in the buy/sell forum on here a few times. I threw the perch on the bay yesterday. It seems to work better for me that way with the small quantities I play with. Maybe by next spring I will have some kinda websight or something. The commitment thing. LOL
