Posts: 8863 | Hell, if I was married and I had kids I wouldn't be able to afford fishing at all! But then I suppose I wouldn't care... The secret to financial success is not how much money you make, it's making a point to save money, even if you have to take 10% out of every paycheck and bury it in the yard.

Location: Athens, Ohio | When I was approaching 30, I had a small jon boat and a 1952 Johnson 10 my dad gave me. When my son approached 16, I got my big Gambler boat, and we shared many, many good times on it together. That right there was worth the money. Now, last night, he tells me I'm gonna be a grandpa. time flies, so don't sweat it, you'll get there. m

Posts: 785 | a cosmetic company.... AAAAAAAAHAHAHAHA haha ha. Ooh, give me a minute, sorry you said no laughing. Just kidding man, anything that helps feed the need is a good thing. I graduated from Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, Ia with an AAS in Civil and Construction Engineering Tech. I moved to mason city, IA and work as a computer aided drafter. Its a long cry form a 6 figure income but I live in an apartment, rent a storage unit for my boat. Have only me, myself and I too worry about (besides my fishing and hunting partners, aka friends and family), and I hunt and fish more than most. Its a good life, wouldn't trade it for millions... unless of course that ment I could fish and hunt more. The key is too look for quality trucks and boats that are used, depriciation can be to your favor.

Posts: 454 | I am not sure how I was able to get my boat. I am a teacher, so I obviously don't make a lot of money, but I do work a second job in the summer and coach 3 sports to supplement my income. I just turned 29. No kids yet and......... I am lucky to have a wife who supports my habit, that is a huge plus!!!!

Posts: 1996 Location: Pelican Lake/Three Lakes Chain | I work for a potato farm selling potatoes and doing the finances. Oh yeah, I have a guide business as well. The way I can afford a shiny new Tuffy every year started way back with my first boat. Buy what you can afford, don't over pay, and build equity. Going into boat two I had about $5000 in equity so I upgraded. Second boat I had about 10,000 in equity, so another upgrade was in order. On and on and now I have found a dream ride in the Tuffy 1890DS. I sell one every year so I am always in a new ride. It took a while to get here, but the wait was worth it. Like anything else in life (to borrow a phrase from Hopeful) it is best to have a plan and work into it.

Posts: 7113 Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | I have 6 years working with OutdoorsFIRST. From the salary I make here, I can buy 2 or 3 boats per quarter. Anyone want one, I've got extras laying around if anyone would like to borrow a new boat for a few months? My "boat shed" is right next to the "free stuff to give out" warehouse we have here at O1st HQ in Aruba.

Posts: 742 Location: Grand Rapids MN | Well I'm 29, married w/ 3 kids and 2 dogs. My wife makes ok money and as well as I do so we have a modest home w/ 40 acres (fairly cheap real estate where we bought). I am a mechanical engineer and currently work at a mining company. I used to work with Fisher up in Warroad but the wife didn't care for the area to much (to small!) I was able to get my first boat last year and it's nothing special but will last me (or actually satisfy me) for a while. We could do better managing our finances but with 3 kids in daycare that adds up to more than most peoples mortgage. So summer time I'm fairly broke when it counts.

Posts: 1504 Location: Oregon | I'm a fisheries biologist working with salmon habitat in the state of Oregon. I also have a very busy lure making business in my spare time. Out here we do alot of drifting for salmon/steelhead so my first boat was a drift boat....still have it! My first powerboat a 19' deep-v aluminum for big river fishing I bought new about 3 years ago. If I could do it all over again I would have bought the power boat when my sons were still young. Jed V. Bikini Bait Co. Edited by RiverMan 7/13/2007 12:16 PM

Posts: 1316 Location: Lebanon,Mo | at the moment......30years old, wife, three girls,im a office manager for a oil company, and before things get fired up on prices...im just the middle man. we distribute gas/oil from pipeline to customer.(you would be very suprised on how much we dont make off of fuel.) paycheck isnt very large, but i have insurance paid for and some retirement setup. anyway...got my wife going through travel agent school for the next six months to maybe help on the high cost of things these days, including trying to get our new house built. use to have a lawn service taking care of 24 yards and still working full time. sold out,and got back a normal life of fishing. the service paid off my debt and got me into a boat and profited enough on the last three boats to just have about 6000.00 of my own money in a fully loaded "08 G3 v172t. now i need to find a way to pay off the remaining balance of my new house???? | I worked for the City that I live in for over 30 years. Doing everything from picking up garbage....when you really picked up and dumped cans by hand....to road maintenance, with the last 15 years working for the water dept. doing everything from reading meters and installing them to fixing broken water mains all winter long and taking care of all the hydrants. Now I'm 51 and retired on a disability with a degenerating back. I'd gladly go back to work, if I could have my back back.

Posts: 5874 | 51 as of yesterday, wife, 2 kids, new house, dog, cat, John Deere, Polaris ATV, old truck, and 2 newer cars. I am an electrical engineer since 1982. Bought my first boat with my brother, a new 1983 Lund Mr Pike with a Merc 50. Single console, and this was a fancy boat. Paid around $4000, and some thought we were crazy to spend that kind of money on a fishing boat! We kept that boat a few years, and then I had a couple used boats, but not as nice. I got my first Tuffy in 88, and then a new one in 91. That was a Rampage tiller. Had a couple more Tuffy's, and then in 02, I got a Lund Angler SS, 135 Opti, Kicker, lates electronics, AP TM, cover, custom trailer, the works. Had that one 4 years, and this year got another Tuffy. This one is the best by far, and the most expensive. I've worked steady for a long time(30+ years) to afford what I do now. Money is no object, but I don't exactly throw it away. It takes time to get to where I am. SO my advice is to always save something, and don't touch it! And don't over extend just for a boat.

Posts: 8863 | Hopeful: Seriously -- Sit down with a financial advisor. All you guys, no matter where you're at in life -- take a night or two out of your life and talk to one. Even if you think you're on the right track they can make sure. Tell them what you want and they help you get there, whether its a comfortable retirement or a house in the Hamptons.

Posts: 2865 Location: Brookfield, WI | I'm 46. My wife and I own a residential real estate appraisal business. On paper, she owns it and I work for her. Business has been good for the last eight years, but up and down the last twelve months. Really down the last three weeks. I don't own a boat. Just took up fishing last year. I could afford to buy a really nice boat I guess, but need to fish a little more to prove to the wife I'm serious. She has a hard time taking me seriously, as those who know me might understand. If I buy a boat, I would need a tow vehicle. My Bonneville is probably not that vehicle. I've paid cash for my last several vehicles, but to buy a boat and tow vehicle would require a loan for one of the two. Sunk a fortune into my house last year, so the boat is still out there in the future somewhere. Now that I know Slamr has several boats just sitting around, (he's been holding out on me), I may make him some Nueske's bacon and a few pork chops and convince him to give me one of his. Kevin 15 to 20 knots out the west.

Posts: 468 Location: Not where I wanna be! | I am the Executive Editor of an Iowa Fishing and Hunting magazine. (The Iowa Sportsman) this is a labor of love, as i make just enough to get buy. i have an incredibly supportive and understanding wife who encourages me to pursue my passions. we have been married 4.5 years, with our first child on the way, due in November....(the best week of Iowa's Bow Season....what was i thinking????). i bought my first boat last year, a 14' flatbottom Jon boat, which i poured myheart and soul into. i put casting decks in it, a bow mount & a transom trollling motor, 2 fish finders and a few rod holders. then this spring on the way back from MN, i got rearended and totaled my boat (The Green Hornet, Tournament Edition) a couple weeks ago, with the insurance money i purchased a 16' Lund with a 40 HP Johnson. which is currently in the shop getting a carb kit and a new lower unit seal/water pump put in.... i miss her, and cant wait to get back on the water. My wife works and together we bought our first home this year. we have made a few mistakes in our past and are paying (literally) for them now. learn to hate Credit Cards.....they can bite you in the ass if you aren't using them appropriately.... but we live well and enjoy life. tomorrow is not guaranted, dont miss a moment!! Live it Up!
